Double-J Stables and Horsemans Campground

Great experience! The owner (Dave) was very nice and the place is well manicured. The price is very reasonable and the ride takes you directly into Mammoth Cave National Park. The well-​groomed horses were well selected for the age and skill of the riders and strategically placed in order. Our trail guide Tina was very perceptive in the needs and abilities of the riders. I highly recommend this stable for a fun time!

Really a outstanding experience for my girls. The owners could not have been friendlier. We took a 2 hour trail ride thru Mammoth Cave NP. There were only 5 of us plus the guide so we got lots of personal attention. The horses were great and the owners let our kids feed & pet them for about a half an hour past our time.

What a super gem near Mammoth Cave. My wife and I had been to Nolin Lake for a weekend getaway and saw a brochure for horseback riding at Double J. I called and made reservations for a 2 hour trail ride. We were welcomed by Rocky, an owner, and expertly guided by Bo (sp?). The horses were all friendly and needed no assistance from us to guide them along the trails thru Mammoth Cave N.P. we couldn’t have been more pleased and will definitely return to ride again. Absolutely loved our trip here! My boyfriend took me for a private 4.5 hour trail ride for my birthday and it was easily the best trail ride I’ve been on. Dave the owner greeted us when we arrived and had the horses ready and waiting. He was polite and to the point. Jason our trail guide was excellent. He was knowledgeable and confident and knew the personalities of the horses. The campground and stables were neat and clean. The pricing was fair and a better deal than a few other places I’ve been to. The horses were friendly and well-​behaved. Wonderful trip! Double J has my highest recommendation.

Fantastic! The prices cannot be beat, the horses are healthy and friendly, the owners rock (we were given fresh blackberries to taste), and the trails/​scenery are gorgeous. I hadn’t ridden in 20 years and nothing about this experience made feel out of practice.
Call a day ahead to get a reservation because the group sizes are small (ours was 5) and they fill up fast.
If you’re an advanced rider the 2 hour trip may be a bit dull (they offer longer trips, too) but if you’re a novice or beginner, it is absolutely perfect!

We came only for the trail rides. We got the 2 hour ride and had a great time. If you are looking for a more authentic ride, not the commercialized version this is a great choice. Trails are in Mammoth Caves National Park with beautiful views. The horses have great and varied personalities. The staff was friendly and down to earth. You will need cash payment. I would say that was the only negative. Definitely worth the trip off the beaten path.

When we checked into the Mammoth Cave Hotel, we were given a brochure for the Double J Stables, advertising a campground and horse back riding. I’d done some research online here at TripAdvisor and was a bit concerned with the other stables ratings. The Double J reviews were good, so we went with them.
I called on a Monday, not knowing that they are closed. I left a message about a possible Tuesday reservation and got a call back on Monday night. We decided to do an hour and a half ride on Tuesday due to the ages of the grandkids (6 and 9) and the fact that the rest of the party wasn’t very experienced either.
When we arrived on Tuesday we were greeted by the owner Dave and our guide, Krchelle. Both were friendly and after we filled out the required paperwork and paid, our party of 6 were matched to our horses. We ran the gamut from incredibly tame (Casper which the 6 year old rode) to Coco, who I think was a little more spirited. All in all, though they were all gentle and followed one another closely, it was still exactly what I wanted. I wanted my grandkids to experience the fun of riding drama-​free, so that will want to go again and again till they can enjoy a more spirited journey.
The trail entered the north side of Mammoth Park and that was awesome — we got to see part of the park that we would never have seen otherwise.
I’m not sure, but I believe if you are more experienced, there were other trails in the park and possibly more lively horses to ride. I’m sure you could contact the stable and get that information. I found them to be very approachable and kind.
We had a good long ride, but in retrospect I should have only chosen an hour ride — some of the older members of the party were fine, but the kids became a little bored at about the hour mark.
Very friendly people and a great experience for us all. Highly recommended!

We stayed here in a class a motorhome. This campground is off the beaten path, but I am pretty sure that is why the new owners purchased this camp in 2011. If you are looking for just off the interstate, or the concrete pads with pull-​through sites, look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for a beautiful respite from the typical motorhome resort, surrounded by honest people with a clue about hospitality and friendly service, Double J Stables is for you. Our family of 6 stayed here in late October 2011, and was treated to horseback riding through the national park at very reasonable rates, a pig roast, crafts for the kids, and a hayride. A dark sky with almost no ambient light greets the stargazer, while embers from the fire rise into the air (firewood is steps from the campsites, no annoying bundles and camp store to go to). The bathrooms are rustic to say the least, but clean – very obvious that the owners are making improvements to an older horseman’s camp. Our family is sure to return, paying attention to the events calendar because the owners definitely have the passion and heart for visitors… and even met us at the end of the road to guide us in when we made a wrong turn coming into camp on the first night!
