J & J Automotive has always taken good care of my car. I highly recommend them to anyone who wants excellent car care at a fair price.

It is a rare thing in this world to find a auto shop where you feel like 1. You’re opinion matters 2. You don’t feel like you’re getting lied to and 3. Where you feel like you’re valued.
I found J&J online about a 1 or so ago after having horrible experiences at a local Toyota dealership. The reviews sparked my interest. They not only kept me in the loop about what was being done on my car, they did everything to find the best price in getting the work done. They didn’t just give me a story and a half about why I needed to get this or get that, they just kept it simple.
Also during this time I was sick and unemployed. Barbara the owner, would come out and talked with me while waiting for my car and just keep me company. I came to enjoy our conversations and her warmth and friendly approach to her customers. I recently had to go back on 2 occasions and it was like seeing old friends. I still have some additional work I need to get done, but I know where I will be going. I have passed along their info to my family and friends because good service is hard to find.

Ended up having to go back here about a week later after noticing my car was leaking oil and the engine had oil all over. Turns out, they forgot to put the cap back on after my oil change. They did clean the engine for no charge when I took it back, but my car could’ve easily been damaged.

No, I didn’t decline having a conversation when I called several times during the day that doesn’t make sense.

This shop did such an incredible job that I had to create a Unilocal account to let everyone else know. My wife and I are new to VA and it is sometimes really hard to find a shop you trust to fix your cars. I found J & J on Unilocal and gave them a shot. They have worked on my car twice now and I was very impressed with their level of customer service and ability to find and fix the problem quickly. They have earned my trust!

I originally went to J&J to get my inspection done. While there, I also planned to get my engine oil changed (synthetic). At the time, I was told it would be $ 70, and that if I signed up for some sort of a rewards program, I’d get $ 10 off. Then I go into pay, and they tell me it’s $ 100. Of course, I told the lady that the guy told me it was $ 70. She then checked with them, and said it was $ 79. So I got my $ 10 discount and ended up paying the same quoted amount.
Then the car I was supposed to get inspected apparently had a brake problem. So as I knew how to replace brake pads, I told them to put the fail sticker on, and that I’d go and bring the car back fixed. That’s when things got slow. Somehow, my car ended up on back of the «inspection queue,» and although I had gone in the morning, I did not get my car back until 4:30 PM. I understand that the inspection queue was busy, but how long does it take to put a sticker on a car already completely inspected?
Whatever. I don’t know if it’s racism or the fact that I’m a woman, but I’ll never come back here again, and if anyone else asks, I’ll definitely be letting them know.

Chosen based on online reviews. All communications to set up, then reschedule, appointment were by email. Response was timely and courteous.
Seems like a good, honest shop. No frills. Bring entertainment since there’s a small waiting area in the front-​desk/​reception area, and no TV. Good Wifi! One bathroom, and a Mr. Coffee down the hall. Some magazines.
But there’s also no BS. Straight up service, seems run well, seems to have wide range of clientele and seasoned mechanics who are actually kind of friendly if that matters to you.
Located in industrial type park off Hastings near DMV. Never see it if didn’t know was there. Arrived at 8:00 AM appointment time. Man at desk courteous, efficient, and professional.
Car taken into shop immediately. One hour later, mechanic came out with diagnosis. Lady worked up estimate for new front brake rotors and pads (about what I’d expected — no «up-​selling» of unnecessary work). Job completed at 10:30 am (even after having ordered the parts from somewhere else). Total time was 2.5 hours, reasonably priced. It was a common repair, decent price, done in a timely manner, and I trusted the whole experience.
I will go back without question and do recommend it to others.

This was my first visit and I was very happy with the Pre-​purchase inspection. They found an issue with the car that I would not have found for months. I called the dealership I was working with to buy the car and they were happy to ‘fix; the issue. The fix would have cost around $ 500+ if they had not caught it.
I highly recommend J&J for their honesty, fair prices and of course Barbara, the owner! I will be back!

I’d been to two other locations… Advantage Certified Auto Group and PT (Performance Tuning) in Manassas and walked away extremely disappointed with the customer service and service of my auto.
I went to J&J, again, after reviewing ratings from others. This time, I selected the right shop and the ratings are right on! I spoke with Barbara and I could instantly tell, by reading her face, she comprehended what I was talking about… from my previous horrid experiences to what my vehicle was doing, to how to resolve it. In front of me she spoke with one of her techs. She reiterated what I shared and they devised a plan for resolution.
As I sat waiting for Enterprise to pick me up, they pulled my baby in, looked him over and gave me an estimate (time and cost) before I left! I know that may be a rare moment; but, I thought it was pretty cool.
At the bottom of the work day, Barbara called me to say my baby was ready and running they way he should.
Go on the website and you’ll find a 5% coupon for service and a newsletter. They acknowledge and accept their coupons. No games.
I just told my Mother, «Mother, I believe I just found my auto shop.»

I did not say your company had raised the car with the car jack but that the individual USAA sent out did. The tire was flat because according to Pep Boys and the company that ultimately fixed the car, if the stem isn’t pulled out all the way it will slowly leak air and that is why it was flat.
I have never had any other companies tell me that I would be charged extra for the oil change. I was advised but as it had never occurred before, I did not realize that would be the case.

I brought my 05 Ford in for a safety inspection and the repairs ended up costing me $ 1800. I already knew most of the things the mechanic found were wrong with the car, so that wasn’t too much of a surprise. I thought about getting a second opinion somewhere else, but I appreciated that the mechanic told me which repairs were necessary and which could wait. He seemed very honest and frank. They even offered me some coupons to help with the cost and gave me a ride to and from the shop. It took four days to get my car back because some of my parts had to be ordered. I didn’t realize the safety inspections here in Virginia are so rigorous. I passed the inspection in Texas last year even with some of these car problems. I liked how the mechanic took the time to explain each repair to me and then to my husband over the phone. They could have tried to fix unnecessary things in order to make more money, but they did not take advantage of me, and I appreciated that. The bottom line is: Don’t buy a Ford 500. They are not made well. My mechanic told me that several of my repairs were all too common on the 500. Perhaps that’s why they stopped making them!

I had a horrible experience at another local shop (not J&J) with my 01 Ford and it was still broken, so when my 2^nd car suddenly started running pretty ragged, I brought my 95 Dodge in for a diagnostic. Barb in the front office was friendly and personable, told me it would be about $ 100 to check out, no problem. It turned out to probably need a head gasket and possibly have a cracked block, so I basically would need a new engine soon. It was a tough Dx, but I really liked how they handled communication and took their time explaining everything. I’ve gotten that «carspeak» from auto mechanics before and I didn’t feel like I got that from J&J. Even though they basically gave my Dodge a death sentence, I thought I’d see what they’d do with my Ford. I was sure I’d at least get a closer answer for what was wrong with it.
I towed in my Ford suspecting major repairs. I got the same tech as last time, Brandon. Barb arranged to receive the tow Friday and I got a tentative diagnosis of catalytic trouble on Monday, exactly the repair I had done by the previous shop. I authorized further work and within the week got my car fixed. Brandon was easy to deal with, took his time on the phone and offered his knowledge to help me decide what I «needed» to fix and what else I might consider replacing considering the age of the vehicle and the fact that the existing repair had it disassembled anyway. He assured me that he used all original Ford parts and reportedly received a badly welded catalytic converter 3 times before getting a good one sent. Maybe I got a bad cat the first time from the other shop.
I picked up my Ford and have since put about 50 miles on it. Brandon warned me that since I’d let my battery die he had no previous codes accessible to him and that as I ran the car the engine computer would run some self-​tests. He said if anything else caused the check engine light to come on to just bring it in and he’d check it out, but so far so good. J&J has earned my trust and I plan to use them again if I have out-​of-​warranty car trouble. I feel like I’ve finally found a good local mechanic!

It’s hard to find an automotive shop that you are comfortable with. After moving to the area, I found J&J had some positive reviews. I gave them a shot.
It worked. They performed a diagnostic for my vehicle and they couldn’t find the problem stated by another shop. BECAUSE IT WASN’T THERE! J&J went over my vehicle with the proverbial fine tooth comb and made sure there was no problem before I took it out of there. That makes me believe that they care about their «product/​service».
Because of that, I will and have returned. From just gabbing with me about car stuff (I like cars) to working my car in for a quick wheel swap, I really like this place.
While I live here, (I’ll rotate out) they will be my shop!

I asked J and J to get an estimate for how much it would cost to fix a few things with my car. Three days later, they had charged me $ 97 to just LOOK at each thing. Not only that, the lady said that she had «done me a favor» by not charging me more!
While I understand that they have a business to run, where I come from (L.A., the car capital of the world), you don’t need to get an estimate for your estimate. And frankly, it’s insulting to hear that you’ve been done a «favor» by not getting charged nearly $ 300 ($ 97×3) just to find out how much it would cost to fix your car, especially for one as old as mine.
Thanks for the favor, J and J. You may be great for oil changes and the like, but I’ve taken my car to another shop, and they’re giving me a FREE estimate — because that’s what estimates should be.

J&J is the best! They are honest, knowledgable and always do a great job. My family and I have been coming to them for years. I live in Arlington now and still try to make it out to them for repairs and maintenance whenever I can. Definitely give them a try and they will earn your trust!

I took my car in today for an oil change that was actually scheduled for two weeks from now. Not only was it super-​easy to change my appointment once I realized I needed to have it done sooner, Cindy didn’t make me wait when I was late.
Taking my car to them is never painful, even if there’s a lot of work to have done, and it is totally worth the 25 miles I have to drive from my house to take my car to them.
If you haven’t left your current mechanic by now and come over to them, you should.
