Business Owner

Jamie Mazzei is the Creative Director of nuBest salon and spa. He is highly respected in the professional hair care industry as a business owner and hair stylist. His vision for beauty and his sense of style has inspired hair stylists from all over the world to create unforgettable hair designs. For the past 25 years Jamie has been instrumental in defining modern hair for men and women.

Jamie’s work as a product innovator and master educator was essential to the success of the million-​dollar company ARTec Worldwide. Jamie was instrumental in the development of ARTec’s textureline brand of professional hair care products. He traveled the world educating stylists about the need for professionalism, ethics and business practices in salons. I came in for a haircut yesterday and the hair stylist who usually cuts my hair were fully booked, so I had my hair cut by Benice. She did a great job of cutting my hair and layering it. She was very nice, attentive, and experienced. The staff are all friendly and helpful. They try to accommodate your requests. Thanks nuBest!

NO STARSS. THIS PLACE IS COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL AND THEY TALK ABOUT Their clients right to my face. Wonder what they say about me! Also completely overpriced for the quality of the service! Last time I went– they tried to scam me out of $ 100 for highlighting 2 pieces of hair! Not kidding! 2 little strands of hair!

I was a client of Nubest for years until the wonderful hair colorist I was using no longer worked there and I tried a different colorist there. I told her what the other colorist was doing for my hair and that it worked beautifully and I always loved my hair. So I asked to have highlights and low lights put in just like the other girl would do. She then proceeded to use a short cut method to highlight my hair and this ruined my hair, I basically was given a chemical hair cut by dyeing my highlighted hair all one color and re-​highlighting over it!!! This destroyed my hair! After she did this my long healthy beautiful hair started to break off and was DESTROYED!!! There was NOTHING I could do to fix the damage! I have had to spend hundreds of dollars since then on conditioning treatments to no avail. I finally had to resort to get expensive extensions so my hair does not look sooooo damaged and horrible. I am writing this review so this does not happen to anyone else. I did not know any better when this was happening to me so it’s too late for me, I will have to wait several more years to get my hair back to the same as it was before.

I’ve been getting my color done by Christian for the past twenty years. I love what he does to my hair! He does blondes like no other colorist I’ve ever seen. He’s so talented. There was a period of time where my job relocated me and I wasn’t able to get my hair done by him. I must say that I wasn’t feeling too great with my hair and the new colorist I had to see while I was away from home. I was so excited to get my blond back when I was able to return to Christian. He makes me look beautiful and I, in turn, feel like a million dollars when I leave his chair. I also must add that my stylist, Jenny, does an amazing job. My cut always lasts for a long time and it grows out well. She’s kind and a true professional. I highly recommend Christian and Jenny.
A quick comment about makeup… Charles, Anna and Shannon are also excellent. I wish I could do my own makeup as beautifully as these artists do for me when I visit them. They all know how to bring out your best features. A million thank you’s to everyone at Nubest!

Warning: do NOT go for color! I received a wonderful haircut, but the poor review is for the color. When I go to a high end salon I expect high end staff too. Colorist I was assigned was not stylish– which should have been a red flag, but I didn’t want to judge a book by its cover b/​c everyone has bad days. I asked for subtle highlights– just a few around the front. She was adding highlights in various places and when I asked why she said its going to be subtle and just around the front. Well, it’s not subtle. My highlights look like I came straight out of the 90s with zebra stripes. When I paid I was charged $ 200 for the highlights! The pricing menu does NOT list highlights at this price. When I asked why it’s so expensive they told me its ombré highlights. I did not get what I asked for and was expected to pay that outrageous price. I felt totally ripped off. For a local Long Island salon, the price of highlights is ridiculous! Maybe in the city at a high end salon I’d pay that, but Long Island? Crazy. Needless to say, I’ll never go back– not even for cut (which has always been on point). I left with bad hair and totally ripped off.

Over rated, over-​hyped, over priced, lousy and mediocre services, went in for a full body massage, (my husband can do better, seriously), body scrub (i can do better in my own shower with a little help from my husband of course), seaweed «mermaid» wrap (literally a 2 minute gooey wrap) and a European facial, i never paid so much for a terrible job, so not worth the money, tells me i have such beautiful skin yet tries to up sell their products and Don’t fall for the nice talks, it’s their way to distract you from not noticing what a terrible service they are giving you. Take your money and business somewhere else, this place is only for those lonely Long Island housewives that are thirsty for attention and don’t mind the mediocre service that they’re receiving as long as they get the «fake» attention. Sad.

I really wanted to like Nubest. It would save me the expense and effort of traveling into the city for a haircut. It’s an attractive salon and the employees were all perfectly nice. They do good blow outs. Unfortunately, that’s were the positives stop. My stylist had her scissors in hand ready to cut before I even opened my mouth. She wasn’t much interested in a consultation. The other reviewer who said this is a factory is correct. I’ve never seen such a busy salon. It is a scene — everyone seems to be hoping/​wishing/​acting like they’re in a swank NYC salon. Unfortunately, they just churn em out as quickly as possible without regard to the quality of the cut. My stylist acted like she understood what I wanted, which wasn’t complicated. My main directive was that she not take off more than 1 in of hair. She took off 4 in. It’s uneven, choppy, not blended well, and boring. It’s the kind of cut I would expect at a Supercuts. A good pro blowout covers a multitude of sins so you really can’t judge a cut until you get home and wash & style it yourself. Doing so revealed to me what a lousy cut I received. Oh and I had to tip 7 different people, which was annoying. Maybe if you’ve never received a great cut, you would think this place is good, but really the stylists need more training and management shouldn’t be pushing for stylists to bang out clients as quickly as possible.

I came in for a single color hair process. As soon as I sat in the chair I was told they normally charge $ 70 but because I was a NEW client they were going to charge me 42% MORE. ($ 100). As a matter of principal I declined and de-​robed. Ridiculous.

I went here to get my nails, hair and makeup done for an engagement party. I was really surprised how easy it was for me to make an appointment for a Friday. (Then I realized it was a holiday weekend.)
Anywho, I haven’t been to Nubest in over 10 years but growing up here in Manhasset you know this is the place to go to if you want to look good.
My event was in the city and knew I had to be out of Nubest by a certain time. This place is so efficient. I was never left waiting long at all between services. I arrived there at 1:30pm and first for my mani & pedi done. It was ok. I’ve had better mani/​pedis done at my go to place in SF but the ultimate goal was achieved. My nails looked purdy :)
Next was my hair. After my nails dried fully I was whisked off to the hair washing section then off to the hair drying station. Seriously I have never had my hair dried so quickly and my hair is super thick too. I felt like my hair looked like Princess Kate Middleton. :)
Lastly after hair I get sent off to makeup. I wasn’t sure what to expect in this department. I knew Nubest has their own line of makeup and I figure since it’s Nubest I wouldn’t have a thing to worry about. So I took a leap of faith and let the makeup artist work her magic. I wasn’t looking at a mirror while she was working on me but I did notice other women having their makeup applied and was amazed. This older women with age spots came out of the makeup section with flawless skin. A girl who had a sweet 16 looked amazing. After a half hour or so the artist brought me over to a mirror to see the finished product. My jaw dropped I had no idea I could look like that in less than 2 hours!!!
The ladies of Nubest made me feel like a million bucks without having to spend that much :)
One thing I wish I knew beforehand was all tips are in cash so definitely bring some when you have a service there. Luckily I don’t live too far from there so the next day I left tips for everyone.
I will definitely be heading over there again when I need to look my best for an event.

When I needed a haircut I went back to NuBest after a long hiatus. I started working near another salon so I used that one. Soooooooo glad to be back at NuBest. The haircut is great! Desi is the man. Never will I roam again NuBest is as good as it gets.
Ok I stopped going again. Desi gives a great haircut, maybe not what you have in mind however. I like to get what I ask for.

are they pricey? you bet. but hopefully you’ll walk out feeling great like i did. as a first-​time client, i went for a splurge to get glammed up for an event and nubest didn’t disappoint. myra created just what i was hoping for and adriana did my makeup in a very-​chanel asthetic. (however, you should know, nubest has their own line of cosmetics). you’ll spend an arm and a leg in gratuities between valet and coat check (in addition to the cost of services), but women don’t balk at prices when they feel beautiful. at least this woman doesn’t.

I don’t understand why Nubest isn’t rated higher. The reviewers have probably never gotten their hair cut by Kristina.
Kristina is the only person on the planet who I really trust to cut my hair. If Nubest weren’t a 4-​hour round trip away, she would be the only person to do it.
I actually haven’t seen Kristina for really long time, but I’m reviewing her because I’m in the process of researching hair salons closer to where I live and I really miss being able to waltz into a salon, relax and close my eyes, and always come out with gorgeous hair… that also grew out beautifully! Kristina was THAT HAIR STYLIST.
Go see her — she’s sweet, talented, and most of all, reliable.

I have gone back to using Michael Mazzei, the owner, in the past year, after not having used him since I was a teenager as I now live an hour’s drive away. However, I always remembered that Michael had not only managed to talk me into cutting my very long high school girl hair SHORT and somehow make me HAPPY in the process, which only an exceptionally talented hairdresser could pull off, and Michael certainly is an incredible hairstylist.
In the past year, he has managed to talk me into cutting about 5 inches of hair off, which again, is no easy feat. as I’m generally quite attached to my hair, but Michael is unparallelled in his talent in cutting my curly, difficult to cut hair and make it look good at ANY LENGTH.
He’s simply a superb hair cutter and I will allow him more leeway in using his judgement as to how short to cut my hair than anyone else because Michael really seems to know what looks best on me, and how to cut this thick, curly hair that can be a disaster and make it look fabulous.
I do have a problem, and frankly I am hoping that someone at Nubest reads these reviews. I have noticed that Michael spends his time while cutting my hair talking to his assistant, or other workers who come over to him-​pretty much to anyone but me.
The last time I was there– he spent nearly the ENTIRE time that he was cutting my hair berating his assistant for not paying attention, etc. It was extremely uncomfortable for me and I did not know what to do about it.
He is a wonderful hairstylist. If he has negative feedback for his assistant (and I notice that he is on the third one in about a year) he should spare BOTH THE ASSISTANT and the CUSTOMER from the experience of his humiliating his assistant in front of the customer.
I will go back to Michael, but only because it is so hard for me to find someone who can give me a good haircut. I was shocked by this and I had read another review which stated the same thing.

Thi hair salon is certainly not cheap, but in my experience, you get what you pay for. Having moved to CT, I was upset that It would be inconvenient for me to get here and tried some high-​end salons here. NO COMPARISON. For about $ 20 less, I went home unhappy, wishing I had just gone to NuBest. I am happy to say that I just made he trip last weekend for highlights and was extremely pleased as always. Nobody does blonde hair better. I have tried quite a few salons in Queens, Long Island, and now CT and I always return back to this one.
The dye they use is high quality and doesn’t damage your hair, I have never left there unhappy (and I was a regular consistent customer for 10 years), anyone they recommend for haircut is talented, gives you exactly what you want, but also gives you advice if the haircut may not fit your lifestyle or hair type and you almost NEVER have to wait more than a few minutes. You must make an appointment because they are always busy, especially on Fridays and Saturdays.
Overall, I have never walked out of here feeling like I had a bad hair day!
They even did my friend’s hair for her wedding and most of the bridal party and they did a great job.
Waxing is good as well.
Sure some people might say that there’s a «scene» but I drink my tea, read my magazine, and enjoy my time to myself.

It is good but it is not worth getting worked up about. It is very expensive for any treatment you get and you will walk out looking pretty but wondering where the heck did all my money just go?
I think the regulars here go as much for the environment as for the haircut. It is a scene for long island housewives.
If you have the money to blow and like the «upscale» scene then go and you will be happy but you can definitely find better or the same level salons for a lot less money.

The epicenter of Manhasset society — and they do a darn nice job on hair, too.
My wife has been getting her hair done here for a few years; they do a great job with color and cut. I started going to the same guy she did wanting a new style (without looking like a backstreet boy) and got it.
A little pricey, sure. But a great value for the dollar.
