STAY AWAY! I will say that I did like Dr. Hawkins. Unfortunately, his office staff is absolutely horrible. The manager (Diane) is unreliable and the receptionists are rude and lazy. I had come here at least a dozen times and seen 2 doctors and a nurse practitioner, who were all nice. But the phone hold times are long and the wait times in the office are REALLY LONG. I had an issue about 5 months ago where the office submitted a lab with the wrong code and I was billed way more than I should’ve been. I called them at least 20 times, dealt with the manager, and went in person to deal with them. Each time they never called me back and were completely unprofessional. Guess what? They NEVER fixed the problem! So freaking aggravating.
I specifically signed up for a PPO this year and pay more money so that I will have other options and will never come back here again. The last 2 times I was sick I paid double to go to urgent care so I wouldn’t have to deal with them. STAY AWAY!

Easygoing style. Went for routine appointment was very personable and did not seem rushed. Will continue to see him.

Dr. Gene Hawkins is the only physician I’ve ever had. He was very professional and the best listener from day one, I never had to look for any other doctor. It’s been almost 29 years. I understand that people complain about appointments and waiting time but that is out of his reach. I’m so glad that he is in his new location with better people in the front desk, if you know what I mean. No more windows and no more moody receptionists.

Went there for pain in the back and doctor mentioned that he will refer and contact me back. Its been 32 days, I called 2 – 3 times, no referral has been even initiated as the doctor office was busy.
They dont seem to care about their patients.

Dr. Hawkins is awesome. I saw him for 8+ years while I was living in LA and always a positive experience. Don’t be phased by the low rating — it seems people only go on Unilocal to complain so hope this helps balances it out.

Dr Hawkins is very friendly and has a lot of patience listening to your concerns and exploring options. I highly recommend him.

Very difficult to make an appointment, tried three days several times no one answes the phone, finally on the 3^rd day after waiting for over 30 min. I was able to make an appointment. When I arrived I waited for over 30 min. After my appointment time until a nurse took me to a room, and then waited for over 45 min. Until the doctor walked in. Noticed the office personnel were siting doing nothing, I am very disappointed

I had my first checkup today in a long time. I’ve been to doctors throughout the west side and manhattan beach but since it’s been a while, i was nervous about going to somebody new. Boy, did i pick right. Dr. Hawkins was so nice and engaged and made me very comfortable. His staff was great as well. The receptionists were in good spirits and the nurses very helpful and efficient. And i actually didn’t have to wait long at all. So excited i found my doctor.

Been a patient of Dr Hawkins for 6 months. Liked him when I had my physical. Extremely disappointed when I called today to get an appointment for my bad cold and trouble breathing. Spent 30 minutes on hold only to be told the earliest I could see a doctor would be in three days on Wednesday. Not acceptable!
Found an urgent care to goto, providence medical group. Took 2 hours but saw a very nice Dr Angelo and was diagnosed with pneumonia. Got my prescriptions and feel better already. Glad I didn’t wait 3 days. Time to find a new primary care physician.

Dr. Hawkins himself is a nice enough doctor and normally I would recommend him. On the other hand, the service you receive in either making an appointment, asking questions, or requesting information is absolutely horrible. Not only are his receptionists the RUDEST people I’ve ever spoken to on the phone, and when I visit the office (one literally never looked up at me the entire time I talked to her), it always takes at least 5 minutes of waiting on the phone to finally even get someone. On top of that, I requested a refill of my prescription for asthma, but because they moved to a new office they apprently didn’t have my information and needed me to come in. When I explained to them that I would set up an appointment, but needed the prescription ahead of time, the first response was «If the doctor says you need to come in, you need to come in.» I had to explain to her the importance of my medication before she agreed to make a note for Dr. Hawkins to review. Three days later I had to follow up because they had never responded to the refill request from the pharmacy.
I do not recommend this office.

He moved to a new location without any notice to his patients. I have a medical problem that needs attention today… not in a week. According to his new medical partners, all of his patients are «new to them» and as a result are relegated to the back of the line when it comes to importance.
Hawkins is a nice doctor who insists upon surrounding himself with the rudest, most inadequate staff I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. On my first visit to his PCH office in 2007, I signed a confidentiality form allowing my medical records to be released by my previous doctor to Dr. Hawkins. The staff, who couldn’t take the time of day to turn their heads, eventually took this sensitive form from me and LOST IT.
Lost it. These are two isolated incidents in a chain of rude, disappointing behavior I have experienced in past years. For the most part, I have my specialists write any extra prescriptions for me that I might require for allergy medication, etc.
Hawkins has now made himself even less accessible in his move to the new office. If you get sick, make sure you plan to get sick one week in advance, otherwise, just go to Urgent Care.
I don’t understand the health care in the South Bay at all. AT ALL. Nice doctors use horrible, rude «medical billing specialists» to deter you from ever using their services. Bascially, you are overpaying for health care because HEALTH CARE IN THE SOUTH BAY IS AN OXYMORON!
Do not waste your time with this GP unless you want to be made to feel like a 3^rd class citizen from a person with a year’s community college education.

Dr. Hawkins is a good doctor. He listens to you and really cares about your well-​being. He discusses your health situation with you like you’re a person and you feel comfortable talking to him. I heartily recommend him.
I didn’t have any problems with the staff. They were very polite and I experienced no waiting. They answer questions well. The building is clean and has a good atmosphere. Lots of windows.
Parking is easy, with spots reserved only for patients. I had no problems here. Recommended.

Chose this office due to the reviews and convenience from work. Office is not very well kept up considering the adjacent office spaces had fairly new and modern floorings and furnishing. I went for a physical and the assistants did not take my blood pressure. Huh??? Only 2 assistants/​nurses with one answering phones and checking in/​out patients. Dr. Hawkins was nice enough but the office as a whole felt old, kinda scary and a little disorganized. I had blood tests done and waited over 6 weeks… Still no phone call. I finally called the office only to be told that Dr. Hawkins was no longer with the practice and that since he had not reviewed my lab results they could not tells me my results. I could either call his new office and schedule an appt. or walk-​in Mondays only between 8−10am to have the new Dr. to review my results. Really? Not the professional caring feeling that I would expect from a 4 star office.

I been his patient going on almost 10 years. I love how he never rushing in or out of the room on the the next patient, he really show compassion for you as a patient, which is hard to find now days for some odd reason. I also like how he takes the time to really explain information that you may not understand. He just recently move to this location and the nurses customers here is way better than at his pass office. So kudos the Dr Gene Hawkins and his new staff at Torrance Memorial

I really do like Dr Hawkins. He has a bedside manner that is hard to find. He never rushes out of the room. He makes sure his patients feel heard and complete. Often asking if there are any questions He goes above and beyond in customer service. But like other reviews — I agree the staff is HORRIBLE. The receptionist took it upon herself not to allow any further refills on my prescription– until I seen the doctor. Well I no longer have insurance. So they wanted over $ 100 just to see Dr Hawkins. She refused to ask doctor for just a few days of medication till I could get the money together. They were rude– not willing to try to help at all. I explained the risk of having a seizure if I suddenly stop the medicine. They could care less. I won’t go back and it’s sad. Dr Hawkins deserves better staff.

Like several others, I too have been a patient of Dr. Hawkins for well over 20 years. He has cared for my wife and myself, as well as my children, who are now grown. He has been professional, attentive, personable and competent as my primary care physician. I go in about once a year for a physical, and he always takes ample time with me, answering any and all questions, and reviewing my current health situation. I am grateful to have found him, way back when his office was on Artesia by the Galleria. He is an excellent physician and a fine human being.

Dr. Hawkins has been my primary care physician for over 20 years. He has always been professional, caring, competent and trusting. Occasionally it’s been tough to get an appointment but I’ve been lucky with their walk in hours. I can’t imagine having to see another doctor.

I have been seeing Dr. Hawkins as my general physician for a few years now. I mainly see him for my annual pap. Everyone on his staff is very kind and helpful, Griselda has been very helpful in getting me referred to a specialist. Dr. Hawkins is also very friendly, easy to talk to, and always checks in with me to make sure there aren’t any other questions on my mind. My appointments never feel rushed. I have recommended Dr. Hawkins to many of my coworkers, and am very happy to have him as my general physician.

I figured an appointment at 7:30am is a safe bet to not have to wait too long, right? It turns out the office was locked until 7:40, and then I sat waiting for another 45 minutes. Not friendly staff and CNN Health on the tv disguising big pharma marketing as medical advice is tiring.
Dr. Hawkins is competent and has a good bedside manner but is clearly over-​worked. I feel bad trashing him because he seems like a good doctor, but his office and staff really make this a rough experience.

I have visited Dr Hawkins every several years or so over the last 20 years. He has always been friendly and professional. I seldom go to doctors because I won’t take prescriptions unless I have something life threatening like pneumonia, but when I do I have full faith in his abilities and care.
If you are worried about wait time, go on a Monday when it’s less busy. He accepts walk ins.
