Three years ago, my good friend, Lupe, got very sick and presented to the hospital we work at with symptoms of abdominal pain, jaundice and general malaise. The hospital initially thought she had gallstones but upon surgery, they discovered she had a pancreatic cancer tumor attached to her renal artery. She was deemed inoperable (the hospital we work at is a trauma center and does not specialize in cancer) and was basically given a terminal diagnosis.
Devastated by this news, Lupe, her family and her friends like me were very distraught. I had talked to a friend about her diagnosis and was lucky to find out she had a friend who worked at Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Pan Can has provided support, hope, research funds and medical information to my friend, her family and me. I cannot tell you how much it has helped my friend with her diagnosis. With her insurance, Lupe was able to get to UCLA for a second opinion to see pancreatic cancer specialists there and had a Whipple procedure that removed her initial tumor. Unfortunately, later another tumor came back that invaded her artery and cannot be operated on. She has successfully kept additional cancer at bay by massive amounts of chemotherapy which have been very hard on her. To have support from Pan Can during her illness, especially the very hard times, has been unparalleled.
Pancreatic cancer has a five year survival rate of five percent. It is one of the deadliest and most underfunded cancers in the world. Pancreatic Cancer Action Network has been a godsend in helping many people afflicted with this horrible disease. Not only is my friend, Lupe, sick right now but I have also lost two friends to this devastating cancer.

I lost my dad to pancreatic cancer when I was only 19, and my whole world crumbled. I watched him suffer from this horrible disease and knew that I didn’t want anyone else to go through what he went through.
Pancreatic cancer has the worst survival rate and is the most under funded of all major cancers. 75% of pancreatic cancer patients will die within 12 months and less than 5% survive for five years!
The people at Pancreatic Cancer Action Network are awesome! I only wish I had known about them when my father was fighting pancreatic cancer. He eventually lost his battle but now I am making it my life mission to do what I can for this wonderful organization.
I strongly encourage all Unilocalers to help this organization by either donating your time or money. I set up a campaign to try and help them raise a million dollars. I figure that with the over 1.3 million friends that I have on my myspace, if every single one of them gave just a dollar, we could potentially change the course of history for this disease forever.

PANCAN’s Patient and Liaison Services provides a free call-​in information program for pancreatic cancer patients, their families and health professionals. All services and educational materials are provided at no charge. They also raise money for much needed research. And with statistics like the ones I mentioned above, they definitely need help. Please give whatever you are able. This is a very important cause to me. Just look at it this way… give up a couple of Starbucks, or give up that pizza & beer for one Saturday night, or one manicure & pedicure, or dinner & a movie. I think you get the picture. Give what you can but give from your heart! Together we can really make a difference. :)
