Ted’s Manhattan Cycles

I went there from recommendation and heard good things about them. But I have to say I was a little disappointed at the work that they do. I actually have to «follow up» DIY on a tune up that they did for my bike. I am not entirely happy about that since they are not paying for the «follow up» job that I have to DIY. LOL
But I am about all the 2^nd chance. If they are relocated, I would probably give them another chance when I need something done (that I can’t DIY).
Their prices for service is reasonable though. And I am really hoping they can redeem themselves when the time comes. Until then … 2 stars.
BTW, if they were in fact relocated, and not closed. They should have put up a sign at their old location before just so that people would know about the new location.

I had spent $ 300+ on service work at another shop to install new Campagnolo wheels and wrap new handlebars and stem. Somehow, after all that expense to improve an already smooth bike, instead of an upgrade I got back a noisy, grating bike and I was ‘less than happy’ about it.
And while I had paid them plenty for service work, and done so on more than a few occasions over the years, the former shop that had provided the problem, also steadfastly denied the problem. And instead of fixing it, had me go back and forth two or three times or more, with all the hassle that goes with that, all without even identifying — let alone fixing — the problem they had created, and let me go home with this problem yet my payment, made.
Manny? I had yet to give this place a single cent and Manny did what the other shop would obviously not.
Manny took my bike, got his shoes clipped on and rode the bike for 2 mins to see what I was on about and where the problem may lie. Within that same 2 minutes he knew exactly the issue at hand, how the cables had been routed/​installed and the handlebars wrapped incorrectly for the Campagnolo groupset to shift properly, and told me it would be easily fixed, but because he was backed up — not today or even tomorrow.
Two days later Manny called me to tell me that my bike was finally adjusted right and performing like it should. When I got it back, I found the handlebars had been re-​taped with an OCD sense of detail I fully appreciate, and my first ride along Ballona was smooth and silky, but more importantly — it was silent.
The kicker? It didn’t cost $ 50.
I now have a new bike shop.

I came in this afternoon with a somewhat faulty pump that I bought from another store.
The employee that helped me tested the pump, then dropped some serious knowledge and recommended a new pump for me. I grabbed some other stuff, all for a pretty good price.
It’s a small store, so the selection isn’t massive, but the prices are reasonable and the employees are attentive.

Ted’s Manhattan Cycles just fixed the alignment of my front wheel (it was threaded too much to the left side before). Armando was nice on the phone and Manuel was nice in person. I just rode it and it was a good ride. Thank you, I’ll be back with any bike issues!

«Know it all» attitude and argued with me about tuning a wheel set to manufacturers specs. even though I brought paper specs with me. Charged me and I ended up taking the wheel set elsewhere to get the job done right.

I dropped my bike off for a simple intertube change and I was quoted $ 29. Since I was busy I asked my wife to pick it up the following day. They ended up charging her $ 43.00, stating that additional labor and materials were required. The older Latino man also had already done the work so it was too late. Overpriced and unprofessional. I went to a different shop to get a quote to see how bad I got ripped off, it was $ 11 (or 25%) cheaper. Not cool!

I have tried so many bicycle shops in the west la and southbay area. Teds BY FAR has the absolute best customer service. These guys are true cyclists who will give you honest advice and they charge pennies for labor compared to other shops I’ve been to. I brought my specialized langster in for some work and could not be happier with my experience.

Manny, the manager or owner, was cool but too stiff and serious for my taste. He does a great job at what he does and you can tell he’s passionate.
My only issue with my experience was that I left sorta feeling cheated. I didn’t pay it much mind at the time because I was just excited to get my new bike built, but looking in hindsight, I spent way more that other great bike shops charge.
First of all, Manny was never usually clear on pricing. You must ask first before having he do anything to your bike. I sent my bike to get my tires replaced and when I picked it up, he had changed the padding or some sort of protective cover within the tire without informing me with a call, etc. I ended up paying for that! Like I said, I didn’t care much about it and was just excited to ride again. My bike also came back to me with the headset spacers moved around and was not flushed. I’m very detailed aware and knew it wasn’t like that. Why would that be even touched when the issue was the tires?
Also, my bike was brand new but my tires came back with the white logos looking a little yellowish. Not sure if he applied some sort of grease on it but it looked old! They were still new but just looked old. Only the front tire was affected but not the back. Did he swap them with another tire off his lot? Hmmm…
I also forgot to bring home some parts I left with him. Didn’t realize till days after so I called. He seemed to play dumb that he never saw it (but then finally found them) and blamed it on my that I forgot to get them. Was he trying to keep them from me in hopes I’d forget?
Just overall felt weird with the situation. Something seems sketchy but I can’t put my finger in it. It takes days just to get tires replaced when Wheel World in Culver City does it in 30 mins!

Ted’s Manhattan Cycles did a great job with replacing my tires on my old Schwinn. I had to custom order some tires because they are no longer made, so I called and spoke to a friendly and helpful employee who quoted me for labor only, $ 10 a tire. I thought that was fair, even though I didn’t buy the tires there, I might end up buying something else in the shop if they were nice enough… right?
The mechanic finished on time and my baby looked good as new. Couldn’t wait to hop on for a ride on the Manhattan Beach strand.
My only complaint is that the man who appears to be the owner made a comment while he was ringing me up. He told me that the guy who quoted me for $ 10 a tire definitely under-​estimated the price. Uhhh, awkward. What am I supposed to do, tell you to charge me more? I feel like if he DIDN’T say that, then maybe I would have bought some bike accessories, like a water bottle cage or a basket. But no thanks dude. Don’t guilt the customer about a mistake your employee made!

I had to overhaul my poor neglected bike. I needed to replace rusty parts and have a new chain put on. Basically, things a responsible rider should do on a regular basis. I was afraid to take it to a large bike shop for fear of being ripped off. I read pretty good reviews here and decided on Ted’s. I’ve since gotten my bike back and it look brand new and rides like a dream. I felt the price was fair and excellent quality of work was done. I highly reccomend, even for regular maintenece.

Great personal service! As a new cyclist they were very helpful with my new bike purchase and made sure I was happy. Highly recommended!

I purchased my third road bike from Manny yesterday. Once again excellent service and attention to detail was given. These guys know bikes, I feel lucky to have a professional bike shop in the South Bay that actually know the products they sell and fix or adjust anything cycling.

I was cycling down from my place with my new bike and forgot to move my lights over. Fortunately found this gem on Unilocal and trekked up 2^nd st (brutal hill) to check it out. Found everything I needed and then some, and true to the reviews, the owner was incredibly helpful.

I needed a last minute repair the night before a planned bike vacation and Manny dropped everything to take care me. He and Armando are always friendly and helpful. When friends ask me where to go to buy a bike I say Ted’s Manhattan Cycles!

I just moved to Manhattan Beach from Chicago. I needed a new road bike in order to tackle the hills here. I read the Unilocal reviews of several bike shops first and decided to try Teds. It was a great decision. Manny helped me select the bike. He discussed my riding habits, my goals and sized the bike for me. He was extremely attentive and knowledgeable. I noticed he was the same with all those who came into the shop and those who called. He picked out a Giant road bike for me. I can not be happier. I’ve been riding the bike for the last month. It is awesome. I’m perfectly comfortable with it. And. this bike makes hills so much easier to climb. He has also been great about answering questions and giving suggestions to me after the purchase. This was a great experience and I would highly recommend Teds.

Before going to Ted’s I drove to Helen’s on Rosecrans first. Big Mistake. They were rude when I got there and thn told me it would be 2 weeks befor ethey could even look at my bike. All I needed was a tune up and a new inner tube. They couldn’t even hold my bike until they were done with it. They just told me to make an apointment for 2 weeks from then. F that.
I referred to my trusty Unilocal and found Ted’s. I drove on over and I am happy I did.
The guy that helped me was super nice and said he could have my bike ready in 4 days. AWESOME! Plus, he asked me where I actually rode my bike and suggested I change my tires from the nobby ones I have for the mountains to something more suitable for the strand. Great suggestion.
I picked up my bike yesterday and I am as pleased as can be. Glad I didn’t just wait for Helen’s. I’d still have a week to go and an additional week for them to work on it.

Great LBS in the area. This place definitely has some history in the South Bay so I was compelled to purchase my new road bike from here and plus giving the local the business.
This place is not like the other LBS such as Helen Cycles, Wheel World or Performance. This is truly a specialty store with class if you love bikes. They might not have a vast inventory on the floor at first like the other stores mentioned, but you seriously get consistent personalized service here from the owner who is a straight up cycling expert and legend not from some teenage kid trying to give you advice. (nothing wrong with that but advice from a legend has a lot of value). Most of the clients (for road bikes) already know what they’re going to get, so it isn’t necessary to have excess inventory on hand. Most importantly, Manny ensures your bicycle fits well which is the most important aspect of riding instead of compromising to make a sale.
The prices on the bikes is more than fair especially in the area where the store is located. Prices on his accessories are also reasonable and comparable and his stuff is pretty good. If he doesn’t have it in stock, he’ll be more than happy to order it for you.
He also has a selection of beach cruisers, hybrids and track bikes if that’s your thing. So if your thinking about purchasing a new bike I would recommend visiting Ted’s Manhattan cycles and you’ll be supporting a local bike shop.

My sister’s bike broke and she brought it in for service. They treated her very nice and helped her out for a very fair price.
I am annoyed though that they upsold her a new tire for $ 60. Again, anything they sell aside from basic parts is very expensive. I got brand new, awesome Michelin tires AND tubes at Performance Bicycles for much less.
As mentioned, I would bring my bike here for service but NOT buy any parts/​accessories.
Also, watch out parking in that lot. It’s small and I watched a car hit another car in it.
