History

Established in 2011.

My love and passion for pizza made me come up with the great deep dish recipe and concept. 3 associates in the film business, each with a passion for pizza and food came together to create Union Pizza Company. It was a long time in development, but hopefully you can taste the years of love and research in the minutes you spend when you devour you pies. We hope you become addicted to our great pizza like we did!

I am a pizza nut and foodie who also happens to work in the film business. Always loving many types of pizza I could not find a great chicago deep dish pie in Los Angeles. I love the many styles of Chicago pies and grew up with Zachary’s and Little Star in Northern California.

So after years of research, study, baking, testing, eating and more eating… I finally created my perfect deep dish pie that both friends and family raved about. Then I teamed up with a film biz friend who also loves pizza and had a great N.Y. style pie he developed.

And with a windy city woosh and badda bing badda boom, we opened up Union Pizza Company.

I can’t tell you how humbled I am that we now have many loyal customers and addicted fans for my deep dish pie. I knew in my pizza loving heart that if I made a great pie, there are many like me who would come for it. I’m a quality nut and I hope my passion shows up in what we make and helps others reach pizza nirvana…

My husband and I stopped by to pick up a deep dish pizza after volunteering at our favorite dog rescue in Gardena.
I found out about Union PIzza on Unilocal.Being life long New Yorkers, hubby and I have been very let down by the NY style pizza experience in NorCal and SoCal. However, we have had some amazing deep dish in this state in Mountain View (Blue Line) and San Diego (Asaggio), so we were more optimistic about trying deep dish in LA.
We called our large deep dish pizza in ahead of time since we were aware that there was a 30 minute cooking time.
We brought our pizza home and tried it. I have to say, the other amazing deep dish pizzas we have had amazing crust, this one was somewhat lackluster. I would subtract points for the crust.
The ingredients on our cheese and tomato deep dish were fresh, but they lacked some flavor when I compare this pie to other non-​chain establishments.
Prices here were a *TAD* high, but we wouldn’t mind paying it if the quality was a little better.
We MAY come back and try this place again, but we will see if it is a better pie when eating at the restaurant. Some pizzas just don’t travel well.

Complete disappointment! This place had great reviews, I’m here on business and I am cooped up alone in my hotel working. So despite the fact that they charge top dollar for what you get ($ 23.00 for 9″ deep dish), I decided to give it a try.
I ordered the union deep dish and garlic knots, which totalled $ 40 for just me. To start, both were grossly overcooked. The deep dish was more like pizza in a breadbowl and since it was overcooked, the crust was inedible. The garlic knots didn’t look even remotely appetizing and were large and so hard that biting them was so awkward that I ended up cutting them open instead.
Totally not worth the $ 40 I spent. The innards of the pizza were decent, which is the only reason they get a 2 star.

Was rushed by my co-​workers to quickly find a good pizza place so that they can fill their empty fat stomachs. If I did not comply fast enough, there would be a warrant for my arrest by the hunger gods. Saw great reviews for this place so I thought I’d give it a shot. We just ordered a simple thin crust pepperoni pizza and tried out their garlic knots.
Once I took my first bite, the first thought that came to my mind was «I wish I would’ve gotten some costco pizza.» There was nothing special about this pizza at all. The dough was not a traditional thin crust as they claimed. The sauce was bland, the crust was too chewy, and the knots tasted like flavored air. I mean how do you mess up pepperoni? Pepperoni!!!
I see that most of the great reviews were for the deep dish pizza. So maybe I should give them another shot. But I mean if you can’t make a pepperoni pizza taste amazing, I’m not so sure if I’ll be so enticed to come back.
Moral of the story, never rush a foodie when you put them in charge of food.

I decided to give Union Pizza Company another shot today for lunch and boy was I surprised.
I pre ordered via phone a whole large union deep dish pizza and when i came in, it was ready. I was greeted by a very nice female this time who was super helpful. My pizza was ready as promised (30 minutes for the deep dish). We ordered it to go but decided to have a slice there.
We sat down on the inside and this time the pizza was warm with cheese that was pretty gooey. The crust was perfectly crisp. Once we bit into the slice, it honestly felt like a different place that we had visited two weeks prior. The meat in the union pizza was perfectly seasoned and there wasn’t a huge amount of grease hanging out at the bottom. We liked it so much we had to stay for another slice. Super quality pizza and great service. Will be back!

Came in to eat for the first time. I ordered the sausage and pepper sandwich. I was very surprised that it was so delicious. It was a pretty good size and the bread was very soft and fresh. The sausage itself was perfectly cooked and had a great texture to it. And they were quite generous with their sauce! My fiancé got a chicken Parmesan sandwich and he really enjoyed it as well! We will definitely be coming back, their pizza looked delicious! The owner works behind the counter and you can tell he really enjoys and cares about his business and customers!

Food is really good. Had the deep dish union pizza. All the ingredients were fresh. so good! Next time I gotta try the thin crust and pasta. Oh and the wings are tasty too!
Service was great too. The people there seem competent. except for this one dude. I don’t know if he’s a newbie but he seem to be a bit lost. He was just walking around back and forth. Whenever he was with a customer another employee would finish helping them. And the worst part is I went in the only 1 restroom they have after him and he didn’t flush or put up the seat! Eww.
But anyways. Worth the try for the pizza. The pizza is really good!

Ordered pizza from them about two weeks ago: the 12″ deep dish union pie (pepperoni, sausage, peppers, onions and olives), and a large «the classic» (spinach, ricotta, mushrooms and roasted garlic).
PROS:
— Called my order in and it was ready 30 – 35 minutes later just as expected
— Staff was friendly
— Got the second pizza for half off since that is their Tuesday special
CONS:
— The deep dish cost $ 28. Yes, you read that right, $ 28!
— The second pizza is normally $ 26, yup, $ 26 but due to the Tuesday half off deal only cost $ 13 which is reasonable
— Both pies were only average tasting, nothing to write home about
— The deep dish 12″ pie was basically just a standard large 16″ pizza shrunk down to a smaller diameter
— There was not an abundance of toppings on either pie
— The sauce on the deep dish was a little too sweet for my liking and there was way too much fennel in the sausage (maybe they used licorice sausage lol)
SUMMARY:
— Underwhelmed. Just average pizza that is PROHIBITIVELY expensive
— Seriously, $ 28 and $ 26 for a pizza? Complete rip-​off
— There are MANY better pizzerias in the area that charge reasonable prices
— One and done with Union Pizza Company

Convenient online ordering from their website (I ordered on my phone). Takeout time for deep dish was around 30 minutes as stated.
I got an Individual 6″ Union Pie Deep Dish. Price was a bit steep… $ 12 for a 6″? I guess compared to the typical price of a meal for one, it’s normal, but seems a bit much for pizza.
The pizza was alright. To be fair, I like any pizza, so no pizza is really horrible to me. But this was kind of disappointing, because I was expecting it to be like authentic Chicago deep dish… but it was not. Tasted very average to me, think it could have used more toppings. Also the crust was ridiculously hard and thick (please, PG thoughts only). Was hoping to have found a local place for deep dish but it just didn’t compare.

I was craving a veggie pizza. The lady recommended the «classic,» it was just «meh» it didn’t have all the veggies that a normal veggie pizza would have. It only had spinach, mushrooms and ricotta cheese (not a fan). I will definitely not be back. Granted they have a variety of pizza’s to choose from and you can create you own, but I will stick to my place in Seal Beach…

Holy moly this pizza is delicious! This coming from a girl who orders deep dish from Chicago to be flown out to her.
The biggest plus for me is that it can be made vegan and it is rediculously good. It’s hard to find a really good vegan deep dish. Of course they have the traditional cheeses and meat toppings and TONS of specialty pizzas, but I appreciate that they take in to consideration my dietary preferences as well.
A fair warning, if you are expecting to dine in and are getting the deep dish it takes FOREVER (easily 40+ minutes). Delivery takes a good hour but I take that in to account and order accordingly. They are very busy on game days and fight nights and delivery may take about an hour and a half. The guys are really honest about cooking and delivery times so we just know to get in our order early.
Great pizza, great service… I highly recommend!

I am giving them 5 stars simply for their Meatball Parm Hero.
I have had it twice and it’s the best in it’s class.
It’s hard to find such great tasting fresh food anywhere.
It’s 100% beef, soft delicious beef on their own bread.
Come with a nice sized salad for ($ 11.00) so not a bad value.
It will fill you up.
Great the night before a bike or running race or any athletics.
(Again, I am giving them 5 stars for their Meatball Parm Hero and not anything else so don’t write to me and say you had the pizza or chicken or service and it’s not 5 stars. I have not had the pizza.)

My partner had a salad, add chicken the last time and the chicken is 3 stars in my book. They really need to source it better. It was cold, hard-​ish, and mediocre taste. Was like the chicken you would find on a salad at Wendy’s. My partner liked it. Not me.

What service? You stand up to order, pay, you get a number, and they drop the food on your table and throw some napkins at you. You expect service with a 10 dollar restaurant dinner?
I can’t tell whether the guy behind the counter that took my order both times was behaving the way he was because he is trying to imitate a stereotypical rude rushed Pizza Shop Owner NYer to set the atmosphere, or if that is the way he generally is. But the management/​ownership should take notice that NYC restaurants over the past 20 years have seen an Increase in business by shedding that «rude» NY attitude and adopting a more congenial customer service attitude like exists in the mid-​west. There is nothing NYish about not saying, «Thank you,» and looking at the next customer in line before you even hand the change to the first customer that is trying to ask you a question. Real NYer’s have never been that rude.

This is one of my favorite pizza places for delivery and now pick-​up too. I think it would be great for eating in as well after I saw the space. It is located right off Rosecrans in one of the large shopping areas near the Bristol Farms. It shares outdoor seating with a couple of other establishments — it is shaded in a patio area with some greenery.
But on to the food! We love the pizza here. We usually order the NY style (which is not as thin and crunchy as say Grimaldi’s down the street) and love the consistency. We have had the Farm (which is a veggie) and the cheese. They have been consistently good for the last two years that we have been ordering from here. We also have had the Chicago deep dish which is really authentic and tasty. It was excellent — if you love deep dish you have to try this. If you go for a salad, get the union salad. It is very fresh and tasty. The spring mix is never wilted and they have generous portions of the sun dried tomato and feta cheese. The dressing is great too.
Overall this is a good place for ordering pizza if you are going for something fancier than Domino’s. They do have a long wait time during lunch and weekend dinner times.

This place is small and worth a try. They make classic and Chicago style pizza. You order at the counter and the food is brought to your table. Prices are good. I was surprised that caprese salad was an option. Ours caprese salad was good with lots of fresh basil.
We ordered a 16″ pie, half cheese, half meatballs cheese pizza. The cheese was a little salty but the crust was good.
I’m from the NY metropolitan area and miss a great calzone. My calzone was satisfying and humungous but there was not enough ricotta, instead too much mozzarella. For $ 9 it is a great deal. There are many options to add to a calzone. I chose Sal’s meatballs which were good. I liked the New York-​themed interior, a long black chalkboard-​surfaced wall decorated with drawings of famous NY buildings.
Service was good and their bathroom is clean. It would’ve been nicer though if they had condiments like oregano at the table and not all by the register. This place is located in a strip mall next to Bristol Farms and 2 stores away from Yogurtland! There is also covered outdoor seating.

Let’s get this out of the way to all Chicago natives, this ain’t Chi-​town. I’m sorry but it is almost impossible to replicate authentic Chicago deep dish pizza. As much as we want, it can never be, I am not sure if its due to the non-​trans fat ban, or the non-​nitrate meat, who know’s but it will never be. I am certainly guilty of comparing this place to Giordano’s and Gino’s East, but I know deep inside it can never be. :sigh:
So I have come to terms and accepted the west sides version of the deep dish pizza. Surprisingly this spot is better than most. As I entered this spot, the place was rather empty with a few youngsters working the joint. There’s a flat screen tv on the corner by the counter that flickered on and off images of a live football game. There is a large menu hanging in the back that I wouldn’t make sense of it, so I gazed down to an actual laminated menu.
Ordered the 9″ deep dish pizza with pepperoni, Italian sausage, and Sal’s meatballs. The cashier stated that there would be a 30 to 40 minute wait. I didn’t mind as I came very far, far away. In fact, crazy me, I took the Green line train down. (yeah I had this fantasy of recreating the Chicago experience, that’s another story.) So I ordered their garlic bread rolls as an appetizer in the meantime.
Moments later the young lady brought them to my table with marinara sauce. The sauce itself was somewhat watered down and the mini garlic rolls were a bit hard. I wish they were bigger and the sauce thicker but I didn’t come down for the bread. Also ordered a fountain drink which they offer free refills.
Finally after 30 minutes, they brought my pizza to the table. It looked like a Chicago deep dish pizza. Quickly cut a slice and placed it onto the plate. I notice that the crust was thin like pie crust. The bread itself had somewhat of a cornbread taste. As for the toppings they were perfect, enjoyed the savory meats and cheese. Although it wasn’t up to par to Chi-​town, its pretty darn close. A good spot to check if within the area, plenty of parking which is located in a large shopping place.

The pizza is excellent with a crust that lays the foundation for a tasty pie. The sauce is zesty and flavorful. The cheese is gooey but not so gooey you could play it like a guitar string. Toppings seem fresh and baked to satisfaction. But the garlic knots. The garlic knots are moist on top, layered with butter and small garlic chunks! Get out of town! I should stop right here.
But I’ll add a little more. Comfortable seating inside and out. The patio’s a nice option on a cool evening. Busy parking lot but you’ll find a spot.
Forget it, I’m stopping and going back to the garlic knots. Later.

Let’s start with the fact that they claim to be experts at Chicago Style deep dish and NY style thin crust! Bold and confusing statement at the least. Simply said, they have not proven to be Chicago worthy at all!
Their Deep Dish pizza is not worthy of the claim!
For starters the cheese alone should Not be the same portion as a thin crust (thus the term deep dish!)
As seen in my picture, the cheese comes no where near the crust! All that’s there is a bland tomato chunk sauce trying to reach the top of the crust. The crust has no flavor whatever and frankly I was afraid to try the sausage.
No greeting as I walked through the door or as I waited at the counter, dirty inside and dirty tables outside.
UPDATE: Owner contacted me and was looking into any issues and making the experience better. His concern is appreciated but I stand by my opinion on the Deep Dish Pizza.

Union Pizza is located in the Bristol Farms plaza off Rosecrans. Although this plaza gets pretty busy, there is always ample parking. You order at the front and they will bring your pizza out. FYI, even if you eat in you can still call to order your deep dish pizza because it will take up to 30 mins to cook. Call it in!
I actually really like deep dish pizza, but I think their regular crust pizza is the better choice. I got the Eastside which was ham with mushrooms and artichokes. Ironically, my husband’s thin crust proscuitto pizza with bell peppers and onions was way better! The problem with their deep dish is not that it had too much dough (the crust is very good here), but there is just too much of that sweet tomato sauce! I even asked for light sauce since I knew it would be tomato overload, but it was still all I could taste. Alana M got the Bright Flame Veggie pizza which had a spicy chipotle tomato sauce and I would definitely order that over their original sauce. I will say their salads are huge and filled with tons of fresh veggies. They also have pastas and sandwiches if you want some other entrees.
It is a nice place to share a meal with friends, but not my go-​to pizza spot.

My friend’s exact words verbatim «I just want to go to a bomb ass pizza parlor and bask in the glory of gluten filled gluttony.»
That being said, I had this place bookmarked for a very long time after searching for deep dish pizza spots in the South Bay Area. We didn’t get deep dish, cause I skipped breakfast and lunch that day and it’s more than 30 min wait. But whatever it is that we got was more than amazing.
The toppings included artichoke, prosciutto, mushroom, and garlic.
The best part — as we’re leaving there’s a sign that explains they don’t use gluten in their food. My friend and I laughed saying we’ve been cheated from our gluten. Haha but I wasn’t able to tell the difference.
