9th Precinct--NYPD

The officers from this precinct have, time and time again, proven with no shame to be hired goon squads.
Last Tuesday I was with two friends strolling the lower east side, when we came to an abrupt stop. There was a mentally ill man, who clearly spoke no english, being threatened by a small man holstered with a gun and his mate. He was not aggressive, and was trying to sit on the bench which belonged to a business still open for the night. I assume this is why they were called, and why they saw fit to browbeat a destitute man with guns. Eventually the man walked away slowly, covering himself in trash bags to keep from the cold. Recounting this episode is shameful, these people are an embarrassment to any developed country. They trample their slogan of «Courtesy, Professionalism, Respect» onto the gutter. It was a bitter, freezing night. I can’t imagine being homeless and without a place to go. I can’t find a scenario in my head that can justify ten percent of their behavior. I wish I knew their names, so I could post their contentious mugs on the internet as a warning to other people. If you encounter a small, pale man and a taller one with slicked black hair, they might be the ones here in question. Call a lawyer immediately.

The 9^th precinct has some really nasty cops and they cover for them. Basically they don’t seem intelligent enough to do their jobs, converse with the public, or have any desire to enforce the law. There are specifically very bad problems with the police who patrol Tompkins Square Park. I don’t feel safe knowing these angry, low life, ineffectual cops are the ones I would need to turn to for help. These specific police are so bad I don’t see how anyone in their right mind could give them a job where they have to deal with the public — nonetheless actually put the public’s safety in their hands. It’s the 9^th precint that’s letting these police officers walk the street so they are responsible.

The staff was extremely helpful and made me feel like my case was important, even though it was a typical theft and I came to report it at midnight on a weekday. I spoke to Detective John McAuliffe who was very friendly seemed to really care about getting my stolen item back to me. After two months of not hearing back, I lost all hope. I spent a lot of money replacing everything that was stolen and just considered it a loss.
Today, I got two calls and a text from Detective McAuliffe telling me that after all this time they found and retrieved my stuff and it is waiting safely in his personal office for me to pick up at my convenience! I’ve never has such a great experience with the cops (or anything actually) that I felt the need to write a Unilocal review, but these guys really helped me tremendously. Thank you 9^th precinct– keep up the good work!

Tonight, two precinct 9 policemen talked reason into some jerks at the parking lot with such brilliant common sense and clarity. I don’t know if it’s training or upbringing or both, but I felt very protected in their presence, their confidence and humanity! made me feel calm after a few hours of hysteria. I wish them a meteoric rise to the spot of their dreams.

Just in general thank you 9^th precinct. We had a small issue they have been 120% following up with us. All have been super nice. and very easy deal with. Very understanding.

My wife and I live on the fourth floor in a walk up building. We have a toddler who has a lot of energy. He is always in bed long before city noise rules for nighttime begin to apply, but our downstairs neighbors had a bone to pick with us anyway. One night while I was talking to the super, our neighbor (male) came flying up the stairs in a rage, spitting food everywhere and throwing punches. He made it about 6 feet down our hallway before I beat him back. My wife called the police as this was happening, around 7 pm. She mentioned on the 911 call that the neighbor was inside of our apartment and was violently attacking me. The police never showed up. We called again. Nothing. Called a third time and finally two officers showed up at 11pm. They claimed they couldn’t do anything because no one was visibly hurt and they didn’t witness it. They refused to take a report. Later, after doing research online and confirming my findings with a family member who works elsewhere in law enforcement, I found that they are required to make a report if asked to do so. The nypd tries to avoid this to keep crime statistics low, especially in up and coming parts of the city. Useless.

A taxicab side-​swiped my car last week on 1^st Ave and this was the responding precinct. It took two calls to 911 to actually get a response aside from some guy named John who was in plain clothes and claimed to be from the precinct. Apparently he heard the call on the radio and (was bored enough and) came out to look around.
Anyway, once they showed up, they were very clear in procedures and I was on my way very quickly. Special thanks to Officer Nuñez and whoever his partner was on the night of March 28, 2013.
Also, my friends think I’m crazy that I checked-​in on the Unilocal app since I was close enough to the precinct to do so. They’re considering staging an intervention.

For anyone else who’s been involved with NYC taxi cab collisions, here are some links that I found to be unbelievably valuable:

I locked my keys in the car on 2^nd Ave. last week. I tried to jiggle the lock open with a coat hanger, and had no luck. A Patrolman saw me struggling, and offered to give it a try. Twenty seconds later, bingo! I tried to give him a twenty dollar-​bill, but he would have none of it. I saw him an hour later, snuck up on him, and not only tossed a twenty into his black-​n-​white, and two McDonalds happy Meals for him and his partner. They were embarrassed, but they still saved me a ton of money. You guys are truly, «New York’s Finest!»

The NYPD is rude as hell. Most policemen are, actually.
But not Detective Darren Oakes!
Some asshole withdrew $ 900 from my account at the Astor Place Chase Bank in NYC (this branch sucks… apparently this sort of thing happens all the time here and Chase is horrible at cooperating…) and my claims to Chase were rejected twice so I had to go to the police to file a report. They were surprisingly helpful and (almost) everyone was pretty chill. I had this horrible image in my head about police precincts and mean detectives but that wasn’t the case. Very interesting experience! Hopefully I’ll get my money back soon…

I actually wrote the 9^th Precinct a thank-​you note last fall; a dog I was taking care of got away from me and ran into traffic; after several blocks he was hit by a taxi and severely injured. By the time I arrived at the scene of the accident, the police were there, and after some negotiation, loaded the dog and me into their cruiser and sped up 1^st avenue to the Animal Medical Center (they weren’t «allowed» to take him to the closer Fifth Avenue Veterinary Associates, for some reason.) Thanks to them, the dog is alive today and has made a miraculous recovery.
Aside from that, the façade of the stationhouse has been used in many TV spots – prior to its renovation – including the opening credits of the 70s shows Barney Miller (which actually supposedly took place in the fictional 12^th precinct) and Kojak. This is probably because there’s a playground across the street, and that makes it easier for a camera crew to set up and get a wider shot.
So, yeah, I’ve been arrested and sat in the holding cell; personally, I think you can’t call yourself a New Yorker if you haven’t had at least one brush with the law.
