Contesta Rock Hair is a dynamic organization set up by the activity of a group of people who share a mutual project.

The intent is to build up a space with no boundaries, whether geographic or around any form of artistic expression.

This is an Italian brand with a rock soul, created in 1994 by Alessandro Santopaulo and Massimo Bianco. Their inspiring dream was to create and invent around a singular hair cut technique a business reality based on an extended network of contacts and a creative human resource management. Passion and dedication to our work, the transparency of our aims and the enthusiasm for experimentation are the strength of our underground style.

Whoa you guys, I really messed up my hair. Like just destroyed it. Made some poor decisions, pretended conditioner wasn’t a thing and just generally disregarded all warnings and advice. So with bright yellow hair, black roots and tentative dreadlocks I turned to the lovely staff at the above salon for their help/​advice/​forgiveness. My only regret is that I can’t remember the names of the beautiful wonderful talented fantastic interesting women who dyed and cut my hair. They slaved over my shattered locks for hours and made my hair look stoopid pretty, I looked like a friggin princess. Beyond that they were super nice, refrained from judging my reckless behaviour and I had a really great time. Worth every penny thank you x a million!

My new place (replacing fellow barber) as my go to for all things hair related.
The lovely lady who cuts my hair (I’m so sorry, I don’t even know your name — Italian, glasses and cool tattoo’s) is friendly, fun and most importantly skilful.
It’s a cool venue on Hudson, far more relaxed than anywhere else I’ve had haircuts in NY and a level of skill and detail that’s missing elsewhere.
Worthy 5 stars and recommended.

Simone is a blessing, he gave me the haircut i always wanted! I wanted a boycut and i knew i wanted it to be done right, so i went downtown. So friendly and willing to work with me, you really do get what you paid for and he focused on every single part of the haircut and made sure it suited my face shape. (Also honored a 15% coupon because im a first time client, check into their location!) I will be back for the products he used to style my hair because they were amazing and i cant do that on my own :))) plus i like the vibe the shop gives me and they have great taste in music, highly recommend to everyone

The best hair spot for guys in NY. I’ve tried SO many, at all price levels. They’re attentive and they really deliver what you ask for, but they’ll also work with you if you’re not quite sure what you’re looking for. Really, really great people and excellent at their craft.

I’ve been having my hair styled here at Contesta for the past month. From electric blue back to brown. Wearing extensions to now rockin a short cut. I have been completely satisfied and extremely happy with what each stylist has done to change my look. I’ve had color, cut and blow outs here and really appreciate the way the stylists truly have passion for what they do and it shows in there work.
Very professional atmosphere with a rock and roll flare .

I went to Contesta Rock Hair NYC for a consultation yesterday. I met with Simone and liked the feedback he gave me on how he’d cut my hair. I called today to book an appt and was turned off by their blow-​dry policy. They charge $ 80 for the haircut and then an extra $ 20 for the blow-​dry. I really hate when salons do this. I feel like if you wet my hair in the process of cutting it then you should dry it, and I should not be charged extra for it. The idea that a salon would be ok with their client, who just paid $ 80 for a haircut, to walk out with wet hair is bizarre to me. I may be in the minority here. Nevertheless, I passed on booking my appt which is unfortunate bc I was looking forward to Simone cutting my hair.

A few weeks ago, I was looking for a place that trimmed bangs. After browsing Unilocal,I had found a review that mentioned free bang trims at Contesta. I arrived in the afternoon, and there was no wait at all. This one guy (I didn’t think to ask for his name, but I assumed maybe he was the owner) cut my hair, and he was so nice about it. I told him I wanted sweetheart bangs, and he delivered. It looked so nice on me. I asked him how much I owed, and he said that I owed him nothing. I felt bad, so I tipped him because he was so nice and gracious for trimming my bangs. I am thinking of coming back in a few weeks to trim the rest of my hair. c: Definitely make the time to come here if you’re in the area!

i only wish I lived in New York because this would be my go to place! While on a visit to the city in June, I came upon this salon while shopping in the West Village and thought I would see if they took walk-​ins since my hair was in a desperate need of a cut!
The staff here are AWESOME, they fit me in that same afternoon which was perfect. Even better they offer you actual drinks with alcohol while you’re waiting, sure beats those lame herbal teas every other salon offers! The stylist, i can’t remember his name, was excellent and a wizard on my straight hair. It’s been a few weeks since i got it cut and the grow out just gets better! The price was reasonable as well, about $ 80, which I’m used to paying for hair that is past my shoulders. Sadly i live too far away to come on the regular, but if you happen to be in the area or are visiting New York, check out Contesta Rock Hair and let them work their magic!

I typically don’t ever write reviews but, I felt very strongly about this and wanted to share.
I have been a client of theirs for years and have always had great experience!
I recently got my hair cut by Gina and I’m very disappointed! The color was all wrong (of coarse I paid for 2 processes) and the cut was awful.
I paid a pretty penny to walk out of this salon and not feel pretty! I hated it for weeks but thought maybe it was me and I wasn’t styling it right.
So, I went to another salon today to fix it and please keep in mind I am not picky!
I was told/​shown that she left one side noticeably longer and the cut for the style I had/​wanted was done all wrong.
I was once a HUGE advocate and will probably never go back!

I’m writing a review based on my experience as a friend that was there for «moral support». My best friend had been growing out her hair for five years to donate to Wigs for Kids. This was the day she finally cut her locks and she wanted to do a total transformation. We had picked out clear visual representations of what she wanted, including both style and color.
The salon itself is small but the staff is very cool and they offered us drinks (even whiskey) and had no issue with the fact that my friend had three of us there for her big moment. My friend was happy with the results of her cut and color but I personally would not go there because the stylist did her own thing, not what we expressed we wanted. She cut certain parts way shorter than we wanted and gave her highlights instead of an overrall platinum look. She said this would make maintenance easier BUT that wouldn’t have been an issue since my gf only tends to keep color in her hair for a few months before she’s bored with it and does something different anyway. It would have been nice if she stuck with what my friend was looking for.
Again, this is a review from my perspective as an observer, NOT the actual client. My friend is pretty complacent and doesn’t complain much. If it were me spending the money, I’d like to get what I wanted not something I didn’t request but would be «okay with».
EDIT: The stylist re colored my friend’s hair free of charge. Appreciate it.

I was in a jam today so I went to see Kristina and I couldn’t be happier with how my hair came out. It was my first time there and she really listened to what I wanted and made me feel really comfortable. I’m usually really nervous when I let someone new give me a haircut but its good to know that I now have 2 people that can give me a great haircut. I highly recommend her.

First, I don’t usually write reviews unless asked too. However, just got home from the salon and boy did I luck out! Ludo cut and blew my hair out and not only was he on point — he did it in 1 hour with precision…(I have a full head of long hair) and what a warm, down to earth personality!

Super happy. I work in the West Village and took a chance as a walk in one Spring-​like day in April. I had been looking for the right cut after being disappointed by the mediocrity out there in our amazing NYC. Its hard these days to find good talented stylists. Seriously…
But I found one. His name is Fabio.
I was greeted by friendly staff and the Amazing hair artist, Fabio. No pretense, no attitudes and a very chill salon vibe. A great haircut later, I have been back for a second and will continue to patronize.
The music and art installations make for a very pleasant experience as well. My hair falls perfectly the way it should and has been complimented on many occasions.
I will continue to recommend this place.

I was visiting NYC and I was in desperate need of a blow dry. I picked this salon on a whim and boy did I get lucky!
I walked in on a Monday without an appointment and I was immediately greeted. The guy at the front desk was so friendly and inviting. Within 5 minutes of walking in the door, my hair was being washed and prepared for my blow dry.
I don’t remember the hairdresser’s name, but he did a great job on my curly hair. He gave me one of the best blow-​dries I’ve ever had, and he didn’t even have to use the straight iron (shocked).
I will definitely be back when I’m in NYC.
