First Custom Tailor

These guys did a job for my bf that everyone else said was impossible and did a good job of it. However, the overcharged him on the previously quoted price by 50 bucks. You can’t really argue with them when they have your stuff. It’s pretty shady.

a friend told me to come here to get my dresses hemmed– so i did… i had 3 maxi dresses that needed to be hemmed along the bottom and one that didnt really need it, but the lady said i should get it taken in on the side. so i said ok, how much?
she said $ 35 for each item.
so went in today to pick them up– total cost $ 145
are you kidding me!!!

I WISH I had read the other reviews before making this mistake.
Shoddy, Overpriced, Terrible Service, Terrible Experience.
I dropped off jeans that needed a patch, they charged me $ 25 for a ten dollar patch, but I didn’t want them to hold my jeans hostage, so I forked it over. ONE WEEK LATER the stitching is coming out, and I noticed that part of the patch was misaligned and there’s a slight pucker in the denim. I brought these things to their attention, and the arguing started. I was told just to cut the threads that were coming out. The issue here is NOT whether I OWN SCISSORS. The issue is I was completely ripped off for work that is literally coming apart at the seams after one week of wear. The gentleman in the store said «well, if you wear it…» Was I supposed to NOT wear them? What’s the point of a patch that can’t weather normal wear? What a waste.
Then the woman tried to tell me not to speak like this because «you’re a beautiful girl.» Ironic to be given some misogynistic moralizing from the woman who totally ripped me off for $ 25.
I wish I had gone to my old standard Stanton Tailor instead of being lazy and going with something closer.

First off, I will say the work here is second to none. It’s expensive but the craftsmanship is top notch and the alterations last.
The biggest problem is that, on the smaller jobs it seems, they have an annoying tendency to charge you more than they quoted you by $ 5 or $ 10. During the initial quote itself, there is some haggling, but that’s normal at places like this. But even if the pick-​up ticket says one price, they will often add some money to that. So you can choose to pay it or fight it. I should note that they’ve only done this on my smaller jobs — like relining a coat. The larger, more expensive ones — like when they completely re-​tailored my vintage tux, they’ve never done it.
But I’ve chosen to put up with it for 20 years because I love the work they do. If you can live with that quirk, then the place is unmatched. If you can’t then don’t go unless you have a big job.

She is the shadiest person. She charged me 15 dollars for 3 small alterations on shirts. She told me to come back the same day to pick up and it wasn’t ready so she told me to come back Saturday. I went back Saturday and only one of the items was ready so I paid her the $ 15 dollars and picked up the one item. She told me to come back Wednesday to pick up the rest. When I went there, she tried to charge me another $ 20 dollars for the other shirts. Do not go!

i always get good service from this tailor. been going here for over five years with no regrets.
my articles are always ready when promised. what i like here is if they cannot repairs something they tell you upfront.

I dropped off two shirts, each of which had a small tear. The woman here clearly agreed to my price of a flat $ 10.
I went back to pick them up and she just doubled the price to $ 10 each. Just shady and dumb.

For an establishment that’s been around since the ‘80s, First Custom Tailor is a pocket-​sized shop located right next to Mary’s Fish Camp.
Run by the affable Edmund, who moved from Hong Kong about 30 years ago before setting up shop in the West Village, the diminutive master tailor charges reasonable prices for his craft.
I had a vintage jacket I recently acquired fitted to perfection — it was well worth the $ 50 I paid.
