Foster Glorioso Salon

I’ve been natural for years (last relaxer was 2007) but I’d never had a wash and go style done at the salon until now. I decided to book with Yessenia after checking out various reviews from different natural salons. I’ve been using Hair Rules (where Yessenia previously worked) but only for blowouts and never with Yessenia.
It was simple to make the appointment. I called about 2 weeks prior and booked a 10:30 slot. I arrived (4^th floor so you need to buzz), was greeted and invited to a private changing room to put on a cape. Yessenia hadn’t arrived yet and I was offered a drink while I waited. I sipped coffee and took some calls and replied to some text messages. Yessenia arrived and came over to greet me and took me to her station. We discussed my hair history and my goal for the appointment, big, disrespectful hair that blocks the view of people behind me. lol I have fine hair so, yeah.
At the sink my hair was cowashed, conditioned and leave-​in and styler added while she explained what she was using and how to apply them. Yessenia stood me at the mirror to show me exactly how to achieve the same results at home. I had shown her some photos of my DIY results with major shrinkage up to my ears despite my armpit length hair. Yessenia said my hair was very easy and the process was mostly using fingers instead of any tools/​combs. I mentioned that I’d had awful experiences at salons where stylists presumed curly natural hair will be difficult (or time consuming) when that is far from the truth, at least with my hair.
I sat under the dryer for about an hour and my hair was later stretched with the blow dryer and picked out for a full look. It came out great! I plan to try it myself later this week. If I can manage to get the same results (Yessenia said it will take 2 – 3 attempts) then I may try wash and go styles all summer instead of my usual braids.

A. Bought the promo from Mr.Flowers. Don’t be scared, haggle a little, but its a real deal and totally worth it. Changed it up a bit with a glaze instead of a highlight (+50), but more in line with my preferences and not a bad cost increase. Worth it
B. SHARIFA is AMAZING! Period. hands down. thats it. she is sweet. interested in your life, but not intrusive. gives honest opinions and feedback on recommendations. Cut my hair in an an edgy, updated and in a way that works with my life and hobbies and workoutis.
Tips to a successful hairstyle:
1. Let the last 2 – 3 inches go. seriously why hang on to dead ends, split ends and an uneven mess. Update your look with a clean cut and let the healthy hair step up. LET IT GO! That really amazing haircut might just be that 1 inch you refuse to let go.
2. Be flexible. that movie star hair might not be for you. Your hair may not be the ideal texture etc. trust your stylist to guide you to the next best cut.

Totally followed Monique and Yessenia here (from Hair Rules). Monique gave me a haircut and it was such a pleasant experience. If youve gotten your hair done by either of these women before you know that they know what they are doing with natural curly/​kinky hair, so i dont have to go into that. But they both seem so much happier! And after speaking to Monique i understand why. I will follow you to the moon and back ladies! You rock!

I am one of the people who followed Monique and Yessenia here. I must admit that this place is not as well appointed as Hair Rules (where I first got my hair done by them) but it is very nice. The price and the location are right and if Yessenia & Monique are happy then so am I. They are EXCELLENT hairdressers and lovely women who really know kinky-​curly hair and I am glad to have finally found hair stylists that I like and trust!

I’m usually not the type to give in to street promotions but I’m glad this guy (Elijah I think is his name) literally walked into my life. If it wasn’t for him, I never would have given my hair the treatment and care it deserved.
I came in for my 4pm appointment (12÷30÷15) and the receptionist was really kind. Off the bat, I already like the vibe of the salon. They make you take off your coat and put on a robe (so fanceh) and it didn’t take long for me to meet the stylist. Hannah, if you’re reading this, you go girl. She gave my hair life! She spent a couple of minutes studying my hair talking about what style I was looking for, showed her a picture of the style I wanted and even understood the type of hair I have. Because the style I wanted from the picture works primarily with typical fine Asian hair, she knew what to do with mine that could work well with my, wavy, thick, frizzy, Filipino hair. She added texture to my bob cut so it wouldn’t come out boxy and had the perfect cut transition from the back to the sides of my hair. She pretty much did everything spot on.
And also her assistant, I’m not sure what his name was but he told he was Puerto Rican, was great giving my hair a wash and did some slight scalp massage which felt amazing.
Overall, if ever you’re approached by a charming guy in Union Square for this promotion, take it. You’re doing yourself a huge favor.

Like many others, I bought a promo from Elijah Flowers who was hawking around Union Square for women in dire need of total hair makeovers. I NEVER EVER and I mean NEVER give in to people trying to sell me things on the street, but this guy’s darned cunning ways and charmingness made me give in. He sold a cut + style package to me for about $ 37.13 + $ 15 in person fee + $ 7 tips = $ 49.13. The most expensive haircut I’ve ever had in my life (Yes, I’m frugal – I’m a poor college student– a vagabond who’s not a trust fund kid).
Despite the higher than my usual prices, I have NO ‘RAGRETS.‘
Sharifa was a darling! Extremely hospitable, down-​to-​earth, and most importantly she gave me a cut I really liked straight off the bat! (and I’m extremely picky when it comes to cuts because I’ve been traumatized by many a mullet-​crafting Asian hairdressers… Okay, maybe it’s my fault– I look for places that charge $ 25 or under and I guess you get what you pay for.) Anyway, this was one of the best haircuts I’ve ever had! I guess Elijah came into my life for a good reason after all.

Like many, I bought this off a guy in the street. My deal had expired but the kind receptionist (Jess?) said she was willing to honor it if I emailed my receipt.
My appointment itself was a great experience. I was offering a drink while I waited. it was delayed by 20 minutes, but Michael apologized, which I respected. Michael was my stylist, he of course did a sales pitch of other services but I declined and he wasn’t pushy. I just stuck to the cut/​style. I have very curly hair and Michael did a great job keeping that in mind– o have a hard time with stylists whole don’t understand how much my hair will spring up. the whole process itself was very quick and pleasant. The only reason I would give this 4 instead of 5 stars is the it wasn’t exactly what I wanted. I asked for long layers and my hair currently doesn’t have a single layer in it. Its not even like I can’t tell the difference, I did not witness him pulling my hair at angle to give me layers. Maybe he was rushed because He was running behind? It’s the small attention to detail that make me hesitant to return, but for the promotional deal it was reasonable.

Bought a promotion for this place in union square one day on a whim — probably would have gotten a better hair cut if I had given a stranger in union square a pair of scissors. Everyone at the salon was very kind but would definitely not go back.

I impulsively bought the Union Square promotion and had pretty low expectations because who buys a haircut on the street? Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the experience I had. Everything from booking my appointment to the treatment I received when I arrived was seamless. The receptionist was incredibly pleasant, the salon felt clean and I thought the lighting was perfect. I was really happy with my cut and color from Sharifa. I went in knowing that I wanted balayage highlights and Sharifa gave me the natural looking color I was looking for. She didn’t rush through any step of the process and gave me some really great tips on how to give my hair more body when I blow it out. It usually takes me a couple of days to warm up to a new cut and color but I loved it right away. Thanks Sharifa!

I did the deal from the guy in Union Square, and yes, like EVERYONE is saying… this place is legit. Hannah was awesome, not just as a hairdresser, but also as a conversationalist. It was a very luxurious experience and the best haircut I’ve had in years. In fact, it’s been three months and my hair has grown in wonderfully. Wish I could afford the regular prices!

I bought 2 promotions for this salon from a guy by the name of Elijah Flowers in the Flatiron area. It was $ 100 for 2 promos that included image consultation (whatever that means), color consultation, scalp massage shampoo, deep conditioning treatment, haircut, blow dry style and finish, cellophane clear shine and 12 foils of highlights (semi-​partial). When you show up at the salon, you would have to pay $ 15 cash plus gratuity. Sounds like a great deal right?
Boy, was I wrong. Always look for any hidden costs. When I called for an appointment, they asked if I had a promo and when I said yes, they told me the only appointment available for me was a month later. When I showed up for my appointment, I handed over the $ 15 cash. When I got in the chair and I started talking to the stylist about the highlights, I found that toner isn’t included in the promo but was an important part of the coloring process. I’ve bought Groupon and Living Social deals for highlights before and toner has ALWAYS been included. I’ve never had to pay for toner separately so I’m not very happy that I ended up paying double what I had expected this to cost. Instead of $ 65+tip, I ended up paying $ 170 to get both a haircut and semi-​partial highlights (including tip). I’m also out the $ 50 for the 2^nd promo as Mr. Flowers refused to give me a refund and I wouldn’t want to pass an offer with all these hidden costs to a friend. Tough lesson learned. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
I will say this though. Only redeeming part of this experience was my stylist/​colorist, Sharifa. She was a sweetie and gave me a great haircut and color which is the only reason why I gave a star.

I fly here from California just to see Michael ! He makes my blonde hair so bright & not dull at all !! He is the best !! Loving my hair again ! Thank you Michael !

They are so sweet and friendly. Hannah always takes time to listen to what you have to say and works with you. I got the package deal and got another one for my mom later.

Hannah Faulker, I will come back to this hair salon because of her. Before touching my hair, she spends about 20 minutes talking to me and asking how I want my hair to be and of course everything she needs to know about my hair.
I like that because some hair stylists go «okay okay okay» or «got it» or «trust me» and once they’re finished. You end up with a bad haircut that you won’t noticed until a few days later because they «style» your hair in a way where it would hide the negatives you can spot out.
Overall my experience were astonishing, I love my new hair cut. I can’t wait to go back for my dye advised by Hannah to let it rest from all the dying for a little longer.

I had a disappointing experience at this salon. I bought the package deal off the charming guy on the street too (my own fault — I know never to buy anything off a dude on the street!)
When I came in, the stylist I requested was not available. I was also told that if I wanted to get the highlights, I would have to come back in a separate time because the stylist did not have enough time to do both the haircut and the highlights (even though I indicated that I wanted both over the phone). The haircut was ok.
Then I was told that because my hair is dark, I would need to pay a lot more than the package deal indicated in order to get the free highlights that were included in the package deal. I have had highlights before, so that should be indicated on the deal when they sell it to you.
I ended up not getting any highlights at all. Disappointing because that was one of the reasons I bought the package deal.

Taken me a while to review this, and like everyone else took a chance with the guy handing out vouchers in Union Square. Hannah was so amazing, she knew exactly how to deal with my type of hair, and the highlights were perfect. As soon as I start earning enough money to pay their normal prices i will be going back!

Like almost everyone else, I bought a groupon-​style deal from a man in Madison Square Park. At first I was not interested but the man was so persistent that he knocked the price of the package from $ 70 to $ 30 — at that point it was a good deal so I went for it. I needed to book an appointment 2 months out because that’s how booked they are.
When I finally made my appointment and went, Michael cut my hair. He was great, listened to exactly what I wanted and went exactly by the picture I brought with me. He was also super friendly to talk to while he was cutting my hair!
The deduction in 2 stars comes in when I finally had to leave. With the purchase of the package, I needed to pay a $ 15 cash fee on the date of the appointment for supplies. I knew this going in, so I was prepared and paid as soon as I walked in, before I even got my hair cut. Out of courtesy I walked back to the receptionist at the end of my appointment to make sure I was all set and she was so rude and shady about the $ 15 that I already paid! She took 5 minutes looking through papers and her computer, asking me 3 times «Are you sure you paid the $ 15?» as if I was trying to steal from them. It was super strange and left a bad taste in my mouth about how quickly she was to judge me.

Like many others, I came here after buying a discount voucher in union square. I was hiiighly skeptical when I bought it, but the guy was very convincing so I decided to go for it. I’m glad I did! The deal was everything I hoped it would be: they didn’t pressure me to spend any additional money, which I appreciated.
The salon itself is nice, and everyone is friendly and welcoming. The robes they give you to change into during your cut are extremely soft (and oddly flattering?). I came in after a particularly stressful day at work, and the whole experience really helped me to relax.
My stylist was the namesake Michael Glorioso. He’s young, but very talented and caring. There’s really only one thing I care about when it comes to getting my hair cut, and that is: can they do curly hair? Many stylists are absolutely clueless (and sometimes terrified) when it comes to curly hair. Michael clearly knew what he was doing. He was trained at Devachan Salon, so really, he’s a master. He gave me a proper Deva cut: did the actual cutting with my hair dry, to fit the shape of the curls. He worked well with my vague, wishy-​washy opinions on how I wanted it cut, and it turned out great. He’s also hilarious!
I’d love to come back for my next cut. Someone sell me another voucher, stat!

It has taken me TOO long to write this review!
Normally I’d never be able to afford a salon of this caliber but I was lucky enough to get pulled aside on the street for a super deal on a cut and color. I didn’t end up doing the color (I don’t think most people do) but the haircut and subsequent styling was INCREDIBLE.
I got Glorioso himself as a stylist. He knew I was kind of edgy to begin with, and he rolled with it and created a super clean, super sharp and modern look. I worry when I go to high end salons because I assume their filled with WASPs who still want the «Rachel» and other clean, safe cuts. But he did a great job, and I’ll never have such a beautiful haircut again. I wish I could afford to come here every haircut!

True story. I scored a deal off the street from a guy who was hawking twofer discount vouchers in Union Square. I hate how I get sucked into these things, but this guy was too legit to quit, and for $ 70 for two haircuts and a bevy other free add-​ins, it was a winning decision. My friend I were impressed upon entering the beautiful, contemporary salon. I loved the minimalist look and clean lines of the entrance and waiting area, and the front desk representative was really friendly.
They whisk you into changing rooms to put on black robes, which gives the whole hair-​cutting experience a very luxe vibe. My stylist, Sharifa, was just perfect. She, herself was bouncing off crazy flavor, and I was in love with her personal style. I remember she had a great, pixie-​type haircut that suited her face so well, and her bangle bracelets and loafer shoes were all that. Anyhow, she was also laid back and very pleasant to deal with. She didn’t push any extra services on me, though she did recommend toning before getting the highlights if I chose to do that because it would have been healthier for my hair. That however, would have set me back an additional $ 100, so I passed on the toning, and also the highlights (which was part of the deal that I missed out on).
I just wanted a fresh haircut, a subtle yet updated look, keeping my hair length long. Sharfia was able to achieve this look for me without taking any drastic measures, and she gave me layers that really helped give my hair some shape and style. I received a lot of compliments on it, and I would definitely go back to Foster Glorioso Salon, and specifically ask for Sharifa as my stylist.
