Genesis Health Clubs is a complete 180 from Max Fitness. The price my wife and I paid for a Max Fitness membership was less than Genesis’ fee, and yet Max had 24-​hour access, all up-​to-​date and CLEAN equipment, and local, professional, friendly staff. Genesis costs more and has none of these. Recently my wife and I moved away, so before we left I went in to cancel our memberships. Thinking there might be a cancellation fee (I wouldn’t know since we never got a new membership policy when the company switched over), I brought in my PCS orders thinking they might exclude me from the fee. The kid that helped me make the cancellation ensured me that there were no fees and there would be no other payment required for me or my wife’s accounts. My wife just received a phone call yesterday saying we owe an additional month’s payment because we didn’t give them a 30 day notice that we were cancelling our membership. A 30 DAY NOTICE? You are a GYM not a landlord. I will do my best to make sure everyone I know still living in Manhattan or moving there does not join your club or is at least aware of what they are getting into. We definitely appreciated the great service, friendly professional staff, and the supportive small business that MAX FITNESS was during our 3 years in Manhattan. Thanks to Genesis Health Clubs for ruining a great thing.

Pros: Gym was conveniently close to home. Staff was sometimes friendly
Cons: Staff was sometimes rude or wouldn’t acknowledge unless was greeted first. Women’s bathroom wasn’t always clean. Machines would @ times be out of order, whenever it rained they had to place buckets because the roof leaked. Not everyday was 24 hours.
I wished I had a more positive than negative review because we wanted to like this gym. Despite hearing a lot about the negatives from others we wanted to see if maybe it would be a different experience. When we first joined we thought it was a really nice gym and the facility looked clean and staff seemed friendly. They also made an exception because we were leaving in 5 months they could do a «special» 6 months membership for myself and my husband.
Well, after joining we started to notice a few things like both the bathrooms dirty. I know it is the member’s responsibility to clean up after themselves but there were times I walked in when I first got there and a towel or 2 was left on the floor but the same towels were still in there even 2 hours later! Also, on the days that weren’t 24 hours they would shut down all the tvs 30 minutes prior to closing and there would be a few members still. I don’t care if the staff want to go home, members should have full access to the gym until closing time. The icing on the cake was when I found a fee charged to our bank account by the company and was told it was an annual membership fee. We tried to fight this fee because 1, we weren’t told about this fee and 2, we were there less than 6 months. I wouldn’t have an issue if we were told about it and if we were there more than 6 months but they wouldn’t reverse it. I even spoke to a woman from their billing department who was kinda rude about it.

This place was hands-​down the nicest gym I’d ever been to with the previous ownership. I had knee surgery, was out for several months, and came back to find my awesome gym had been bought out by a chain that really doesn’t seem to care about customer service.
I don’t like writing bad reviews about places, but tonight was kind of the last straw.
From a gradual decline in cleanliness and upkeep of machines that many of your members have noticed (I hear it regularly in the locker room), watching one of the staff tell an older lady last week that it «wasn’t her job» to stock toilet paper in the women’s locker room.
Then this evening, twenty-​five minutes before the place closed, a female staff member walked up and shut off the tv I was watching, while I was directly in front of it, plugged into the elliptical and very tuned into a show. She didn’t bother to ask me, but did ask a man on the treadmills (he was right in front of her, so she had to I guess). I was kind of blown away.
I understand that she wanted to get off work as early as possible, but when the hours say you’re open until seven, perhaps consider your customers may want full use of the facilities until seven.
I know tons of people were pretty angry when the hours were changed from 24 hour-​access, and it seems that you listened and made them a bit more reasonable during the week, so my hope is that the management will actually read this review, and others– and ADDRESS these problems rather than ignoring them.
Its your call Genesis, but you’re going to begin losing more and more of your military and working professionals if you don’t fix these issues.

Not worth the price of membership. Lack of space. Never been greeted with a smile. Tiny bathrooms/​lockers. Not adequate use of space. Have decent equipment but the setup is weird. I feel like if you’re paying that much they should provide better service and provide better equipment.

This gym has horrible management. The front desk folks are usually very kind, and the finance lady (Colleen) was immensely kind and helpful. When I merged my account with my husband after we got married, they didn’t cancel my individual membership, so we were charged twice. I had to call AND go into the gym 5 times and speak with 4 different people before I was able to speak with Colleen and she dealt with the issue. When I asked to speak with a manager twice, he would never come out and speak with me. He just continued to tell the front desk person to write down my number and someone would call me back. Never once did I get a call back, and I was shocked that a manager on duty (Anthony the latter time) wouldn’t even come out and listen to the situation. When I asked for corporate’s number to try and escalate the issue, they didn’t even have that available at the front desk.
If you sign up with this place, make sure you pay with a credit card that has good protection against unauthorized charges. Don’t ever expect to be able to speak with a manager, and also be prepared for dirty equipment as they got rid of wipes and don’t have enough spray bottles to effectively clean the machines/​areas.
