Judy Hages teaches «The Art of Belcanto» singing method in it’s purest form for contemporary styles of singing (Dance, Pop, R+B, Rock, etc.). This method for singing is a proven approach that is both aggressive and effective. Each student has a private voice lesson which is reserved for working on performance and repertoire. To enhance the effectiveness of these voice lessons the group classes consist of voice building, technical voice lessons, and performance class. As a result of the voice lessons and voice building classes, your voice will attain approximately 6 months of voice growth within the first six to nine weeks of training. Within the first six months of voice building it is possible for a healthy voice to attain approximately five years of voice growth. Everyone must have a private lesson, however the voice exercises must be sung in groups.

Within the structure of these voice lessons, students must strive for a high level of achievement and consistency for the benefit of all.

This is a serious program consisting of a combination of private voice lessons and group voice lessons that is only open to serious dedicated students. As a result of taking voice lessons with Judy, your voice will naturally improve from the voice building alone (although every student must have a private lesson). Within the first 6 – 9 weeks you attain 6 months of voice growth and within the first 6 months you attain 5 years of voice growth in both texture of tone and vocal range. You will attain the best result from your vocal training by maintaining consistency in your private voice lessons and by taking responsibility for your own voice. Judy will spend a considerable amount of time and effort working with your voice in private and group voice lessons and will require an equal amount of effort (not time) from the student in order to achieve a spectacular result. Each student’s personalized voice program must consist of the following (at the very minimum):1 private voice lesson a week

My life has always been about singing and entertainment. Beginning at the age of six I developed both vocal and stage skills as a singer and entertainer on the TV program ‘The Howdy Doody Hour’ in New York City. As a teacher for over 39 years, my students have performed all over the world as solo artists or band members and in dance clubs, cabaret clubs, radio stations, TV and musical theatre. Two of my students who have granted me the right to mention them are Q-​Tip and Dan McBride of Thirteen Hands. Q-​Tip was a member of the critically acclaimed group ‘A Tribe Called Quest’, and is more recently involved in solo work as well as with his jazz-​influenced hip hop group. Dan McBride was chosen for the ballot by The National Academy of Recording Artists for the 2006 Grammy Awards for both ‘Best Male Pop Performance’ and ‘Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist’. Students have performed with the Scissor Sisters, opening up for Lady Gaga.

All I ever hear is, «You have a good voice, or you don’t.» That’s simply not true! Over the years I have spent training with Judy, I have seen her completely transform voices with this technique. A student can come to her with practically no voice, and with dedication and hard work, a listener would never know how that student began. The training just works, and it’s simply astounding. Personally, I started with Judy when I was a young teenager. I was one of those kids with a nasal, small voice. Now, I truly feel like a singer — I have vocal strength, a large range, and best of all, I have control over my voice.
Not only does the training truly work, but Judy herself is inspiring and motivational. She tells it like it is, and she will get you to work hard for what you want. And if you want a voice, she’s just the right woman to call.

The past 6 years have been life-​changing because of Judy. Judy’s style of teaching encompasses an extremely methodological approach using the complex, yet learnable techniques of Bel Canto singing. Accompanied by the passion of her and her students, I was and still am constantly surrounded by the addicting fervor of musical talent, stemming from students of all levels of training.
I came to Judy with the idea that I would never be able to make singing my passion because of my vocal health conditions. Ranging from nodules, to MTD (Muscle Tension Dysphonia), and scar tissues on my vocal chords, talking for over 30 minutes was a challenge, let alone even singing. I was in a very sore spot from the beginning of my lessons, but rest assured, Judy’s way of teaching has been so therapeutic to my healing process, it’s so hard to believe sometimes. My range, strength, and endurance of my singing voice have improved so dramatically over the years.
Judy Hages made me believe in myself again. I can now sing well over an hour without hurting any part of my vocal chords. She gives so much to her students without expecting anything in return. She is knowledgeable and really cares about the needs and wants of each and every one of her students. I could not have asked for a better teacher and life coach. She truly is a gem and I highly recommend her to any aspiring singers out there.

I have been training with Judy for almost three years now. As a jazz and classically trained guitarist, I was looking for a voice teacher who could teach me the mechanisms of singing in the same way I had learned guitar. Having had several voice teachers in the past who relied heavily on metaphors and abstract concepts, discovering Judy and the bel canto technique which she teaches was like a godsend. I can’t begin to describe how much I have improved both as a singer and as an artist under Judy’s guidance — in every respect, from range, to tone, to musicality, phrasing and expression. The tools she equips students with, when used correctly, ensure a healthy, rich, full voice for life. The training is very physical, and everything has a logical basis in the physiology of the voice — from breathing to vowel formation to support. After you get basic technique down, there is a heavy emphasis on artistry to bring out all the sides of your voice — to «sing with true feeling» as Judy would say. If you are looking to sing on a professional level and to your absolute fullest potential, I honestly believe there is no better teacher or technique out there.

I’ve always loved music but it really wasn’t one the menu for me growing up. I finished school and after a year of working I found myself asking «What now?» Music seemed to come up over and over again.
I have been with studying under Judy for 5 years now. I came into lessons with no experience in singing and with no background in music. Fast forward to today. I have been taught a technique and given tools to make sure I take care of my voice. The process has been a dedicated one. The group environment is that of a supportive one and we learn as much as we can from one another. Judy is a wonderful teacher who knows when to push and when to pull back. The dedication she has to each student is unparalleled and is show in the level of attention she gives to each voice. She will give you just as much as give her and most of the time it’s more. The technique works especially if you’re looking out for the longevity and safety of your voice.

For context — Although I liked singing, a year ago (from this post) I would have never thought that I would take up voice lessons. I found Judy at a time where work and personal life were in major conflict and I needed to do something creative. On a whim, I looked up singing lessons on Unilocal (thanks ya’ll) and found Judy. I shot her an email and later that day we spoke on the phone. I didn’t know it at the time, but what transpired was the start of something wonderful. It was the beginning of cultivating the artist within me. I’m only a few months in, but my voice and confidence has reached unmeasurable heights. I didn’t think I would be able to sing like this and develop my voice. I’m even still surprised when she says that I sound good. As a teacher, Judy cares and checks in often. She is invested in your life. She takes her teaching very seriously and will be upfront about how you can be better, with guidance of course. Music and these lessons have shaped the course of my life and I found something to 1. take pride in 2. relieve frustrations and anxiety and 3. make new wonderful friends at (the other students are as great as they come).
Words cannot express how highly I recommend Judy for lessons. If you’re serious about music/life…make the call.

I have had several voice teachers starting over 15 yrs ago. All of these teachers varied with their suggestions, techniques, exercises. I wasn’t sure why I didn’t stick with any of these teachers other than feeling a sense of frustration and the thought that maybe I didn’t have what it takes to do anything significant with singing. However, I was never able to forget my passion for music and performing and decided I would try once again. That is when I found Judy Hages and I feel blessed. She is an amazing, extremely sharp, charismatic, caring and talented woman who invests everything into the success of her students. Even more importantly is her teaching style. Her technique is flawless and while it will take me a lot of practice and determination, I now believe that I can reach my singing potential if I follow her voice building exercises and techniques and suggestions within songs. Her group lessons are great to learn from more experienced students and provides a great network of singers. After starting lessons with Judy I really can’t imagine taking lessons with anyone else. Once again I feel pretty lucky to have found her!!!

Ms. Hages is an astounding bright light in the creative community, if i only came to her for inspiration and insight into a career in music i would have been satisfied 100 times over by now. Her support and love of her students is beyond measure, however, I did not come for that reason, when i walked into the Hages Studio i could barley speak let alone sing from «singing» if you could call it that, more like screaming in ignorance. i was in desperate need of help, i thought i might never be able to sing again… within a very short time i was not only singing again, but singing with more range and power than i ever imagined i could have, the quality, texture and warmth. like gifts from above, also added by her technique, has given me a voice beyond my wildest fantasy. please avail yourself to this Master Teacher!!! you will not regret it i promise you

I have been a singer since the age of 5. To my dismay during the 80’s and 90’s I discovered Hard Rock and Grunge. I thought I was showing emotion by screaming in my throat with a cigarette in one hand that held the Mic and bottle of hard booze in the other I was young and it seemed to work for a short while until I lost my voice and my range was gone. I was depressed and devastated that I may never sing again without surgery.
I then found Judy Hages sometime in 1992 with my damaged voice. I had a Nodule on one vocal chord and it made an indentation in the other chord from me forcing them together to try to produce sound. She helped heal my voice without surgery, during the healing process as I kept training with her, I learned to sing properly without hurting myself ever again. Within a few months I was back out singing again, more cautiously of course as my voice slowly came back. I am currently singing regularly for hours at a time. My voice is better than ever in my life, as I get older I thought it would get weaker but it just seems to get better and better the more I sing.
In all my years before training with Judy Hages my voice was in control of me and I lacked confidence because I never knew if i would hit that note or not, or would I make it through the night and still have a voice by the end. With this training and with Judy’s help. I’m now in control of my voice.
Judy is so passionate about the voice and it’s obvious when you first meet her you will never find anyone who is more dedicated to her students. Singing is more than an art form, it’s a way of life and standards that we set for ourselves and how we want to live our lives as singers. I would rather be singing beautiful music that touches peoples lives than anything else. Judy gave me back my voice and my life. Because of her, I have never felt so fulfilled.

Judy and this training have completely changed the course of my life. I started out with a very small, generic sounding voice with no range but through many years of training I developed a voice that is better than I could have ever dreamed possible. I never thought that a voice could be changed so drastically. I had always been told that you either have a naturally good voice or you don’t. But that is simply not the case. I have seen Judy help people who could barely speak develop voices that are so big and so unique that no one would ever believe that they didn’t have that voice naturally. And the development happens extremely quickly.
The training takes focus and hard work, especially in the beginning, but once you get past everything being new and confusing, it all starts to work. The best part of the training is that you learn exactly how to do everything you want to do (you can learn to sing any and all styles of music) and how to continuously develop and maintain your own voice. The beauty of that is that you will not be dependent on someone for your whole life. You become the master of your own voice. It’s very freeing and rewarding to know that you can sing and know why things are working and how to fix things that aren’t working. It takes all of the fear and guesswork out of singing. It’s not only an art but a science.
I highly recommend studying with Judy Hages if you are serious about singing and willing to do some very satisfying work. Ive just started working with Judy this past year. I came to Judy with an undamaged voice, so this allows me to move a t a much faster pace than most. I do my private sessions, as well as both voice buildings in New York and New Jersey. Although i have only been with her for a short period of time my voice technique has progressed in every aspect. Therefore allowing me to use my voice to its full potential. Judy truly the most knowledgable coach i have met regarding the voice, she can literally teach you how to fix an problem you may have within your voice. Working with Judy has really been life altering. I’ve been singing for 14 years, and I never really had any formal technical training aside from DVD’s and what I learned in high school. With that said I had a career touring and playing an average of 6 shows a week. My lack of technique had me losing my voice almost on a nightly basis, and made my life very difficult since I relied on my voice.
I’ve been working with Judy since June of 2013, and since my first lesson with Judy I felt like I was being introduced to an entire world of singing, and technical training that I was completely ignorant to. Judy is a Master trainer, and has helped me save my voice, have it grow infinitely and also has a core group of students that brought life to my pursuit of music.

I have studied with Judy Hages for 10 years and she is excellent. I was primarily a guitarist and I just started studying voice because I would lose my voice when I sang out. Judy taught me how to take care of my instrument, I sang out over 100 shows last year and never lost my voice once and she taught me how to sing with artistry and beauty. The technique she teaches is very serious and will give you your life if you follow it.

I have been a student of Judy’s for 14 years now. I had many voice teachers before finding her, but saw very little improvement in my voice. I also, unknowingly, had a nodule on my vocal chord, which no one diagnosed, or even questioned. When I met Judy– even only after hearing me speak– she immediately questioned my vocal health, suggesting that I had a node. I went to the doctor, and got confirmation that she was right. I began lessons with her, and without going on voice rest or having any procedure done, my nodule was gone in one year. I sang regularly that entire year, my voice healed, and I haven’t had even one problem since.
My voice has developed dramatically in quality, range, and size. I use my voice every day singing with bands, recording, touring, etc. That is a testament to Judy and the technique she teaches. She is a master of the Art of Bel Canto technique. It is a very solid method and she is a magnificent teacher. If you’re really looking to sing seriously, Judy is the teacher for you.
