Very inconsistent and tired of being disappointed with the cuts. I have tried all of them and they have all disappointed me. Most recently Steve was on vacation and I was forced to go to one of the guys that has some poor reviews and against my better judgement I didn’t leave.
Never again!

I got the most precise haircuts in my life at this place with Mario Guzman, who’s very detail oriented and willing to spend time on each client. Was heartbroken to learn he’d left, and finally hunted him down at his new dig — J-​Mar Special Touch in the East Village. Sounds silly, but I’m so glad to have my barber back.

Great neighborhood spot with affordable prices. Can’t go wrong with a cut from Mario or Steve. Have been frequenting this barbershop for around 2 years and have never had a bad experience. Short wait times, fast results.
I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a solid cut in Hell’s Kitchen.

Plain old very good haircut by professional staff at a price and convenience (walk-​in) that makes it a great value… splurge and get a shave!

Steve has been barbering in NYC since ’77, and has been at this always clean and comfortable location since ’84. Although I first ‘found’ him on 11÷11÷11 and have been going solely to him ever since, what prompted this review is that an unknown couple walking behind me on 9^th Avenue & 54^th Street, literally stopped me to comment on the perfect haircut I had!!! This is two weeks after the last time Steve cut my hair.
Needless to say, I consider him the best hair editor in NYC!

Affordable price for decent haircuts. Steve’s the man.

Moved here in 2012, and came to the shop based on reviews. Steve’s a great guy, always very friendly and professional. It’s a little neighborhood style joint, so sometimes the waits can get long, but it’s worth it. It’s not the cheapest in the neighborhood, but after visiting a couple other places, this is the shop that doesn’t make my hair look bad, or make me feel uncomfortable for deigning to be a customer.

Steve met me with a handshake. We discussed what I wanted and off he went. He was very thorough. The cut cost $ 23 with a beard trim. I will try the hot towel shave next time but I think I found my new barber.

After moving to the neighborhood a few years ago, I started looking for a new barber and there was no shortage of options in Hell’s Kitchen. None of the barbers I tried gave me that comfortable happy feeling until I tried Steve.
He’s been cutting hair for over 20 years, and he lives around the corner so the shop is always open, even if the trains aren’t running or during snowstorms. Last year, he almost lost me as a customer after he started working alone for reasons beyond his control. Waits for a haircut were routinely a couple of hours during busy times, so I would literally stand outside his shop 15 minutes before opening time so I could be the first customer. However, another Barber Shop closed, and now Basilio and Mario work with him, so there’s hardly ever a wait.
I haven’t tried Mario yet, although he seems to have a following too, but I’m extremely happy with my haircuts from Steve and Basilio. And you really can’t beat a $ 20 haircut in Manhattan.

I followed Mario over here from the Carnegie Hall Barbershop. It’s a nice, clean shop, no-​nonsense and good, solid hair cutting services.

Steve is as good as they come. Talented and meticulous, he has the skill to produce a fantastic haircut with minimal guidance. I would wait an hour and pay a hundred bucks for a pair of scissors between his hands and my hair.
The problem is Steve isn’t the only person at this establishment. I have had a haircut by someone other than Steve twice, and both times spent weeks of grimacing every time I caught myself in the mirror. At a salon with multiple barbers and a decent backlog, or at one which takes reservations, it isn’t awkward to ask for your preferred barber. Neither are always the case at Steve’s.
Steve’s Editing Barber Shop is a fine place if you can be sure you will get your hair cut by Steve. But if you pass by the window and there is anybody but him standing, keep walking.

Went in cause of the good reviews however wait was extremely long and there was only one person in front of me. Explained exactly what I wanted and he repeated it to me. Then he proceeded to cut all the hair off the sides of my head. No fade which we talked about. Not at all happy but what else can you do? The hair is gone. It’s hats till it grows in. Won’t be going back.

This is a cool place and Steve gives a great cut. When I stay at The Kimpton hotel in this area I always visit Steve’s. Walk-​ins are welcome which is a nice bonus for business travelers!

Clean fade — friendly environment. Compliments from a California native. I will recommend this place to any friends that visit the area. Keep it up gents!

I was greeted with a hello and a handshake when I sat down. That’s a great way to start friendship and/​or a business meeting. My hair cut was the best so far in manhattan (6^th) and it was at a very reasonable price. My time in the barber chair went fast with some friendly conversation. The shop was clean and tidy. The tv was not on but the radio played songs from a hit station so the time passed by quickly. I recommend Steve to any one looking for a men’s hair cut in the area. I will return happily.

This is a solid option in HK and better than the other local shops I’ve tried. I didn’t have to way and Steve took his time with the details. $ 15 for a basic men’s cut is the lowest price I’ve found in Manhattan.

this place is aces and echo the above positive reviews in that Steve and Champ are both great barbers and chill gentleman. Love this place.

I’m hesitant to give this place a 5-​star rating if only because it ups the possibility I’ll have to wait longer for my next cut but honestly, it’s worth it. I’ve lived in the city for 5 years and searched far and wide for a decent, affordable haircut. From snooty salons in Brooklyn to $ 9 Russian barber cuts in the E Village and everything in between, I settled on Steve’s after reading about them in TimeOut NY– thank goodness I stopped in.
I’m not from the neighborhood but have been here 3 times and each time I’ve been given a fantastic, attentive haircut. I vote for the all-​scissor– both Steve and Champ are incredibly thorough and really take their time, no matter how crowded it might be. The place is clean, the guys are extremely polite and I’ll be coming back here for years. I’ll be making the travel uptown for a haircut from here-​on-​out.
