History
Established in 1949.
The story of Café 290 began about sixty years ago when Red Ferguson took an Army barracks from Camp Swift and planted it beside Texas hi-way 290 with a dream of running his own café. The Café ownership later passed to longtime proprietor Tillie Bozarth. Later Andy Norton bought the Café from Tillie and with the help of long-time cook Angie Washington, the 290 Café’s built a reputation for serving some the best comfort food and the biggest and best chicken fried steaks in central Texas. In 1995, Liz McMillin along with husband Eugene took over the Café operations. Liz was a foodie from Austin’s Four Season’s Hotel; she spent time in the kitchens of prestigious restaurants in Singapore and Manhattan, and new a good thing when she saw it.
