We headed south for a road trip, going from Mount Pinos through Frazier Park, then through Lockwood Valley, and just past the turnoff for Reyes Creek Campgrounds and Camp Scheideck, found this amazing Buddhist retreat. We were instantly charmed. I vowed to return. On the second visit, I met Rev. Phoebe and the others, who are extremely gracious, generous, kind, and have a good sense of humor. The very large property is peaceful and beautiful, with Rizo Trail in the back of the property winding through charming hills, offering lovely views and a few benches where you may sit. You may stay for a night or longer for extended visits, and may offer a donation of your choosing. Vegetarian dinners are served. There is a schedule of events, including working in the garden, quiet time, meditation, and much more, differing depending on the day, and you may spend a lot of the time on the premises. There are stupas, Buddhas, a Quan Yin statue, gardens, fountains, and much more. Whether you are Buddhist or not, and whether you wish to meditate or not, you are welcome, and I think all of us can use a quiet retreat, no? And it IS a quiet place, so it is important to be respectful of this, and further, be respectful around the Buddhas and the stupa(walking around in a clockwise manner, etc.) and the rest of the grounds. The people who stay there often can be found in the third house, which is the farthest from the gate. NOTE: The phone number listed above is incorrect. You can find their contact information on their website: Pine Mountain Buddhist Temple and Meditation Retreat is a fantastic place to spend a day. Or a week. Or more. I really love this place, and wholeheartedly recommend whether you are Buddhist or meditate or not.

This is a cute little place outside of Ojai. I happened to be driving by and decided to stop for a look. The practitioners were super friendly and eager to show me around the property. I signed their guest book and said a prayer before continuing on my journey.
