Stoutridge Vineyard

Always a great experience! We made a trip to southern New York just for this winery. They are doing something special with thier philosophy of no chemical alteratuons to thier wine creations. Steve and Kim, the owners, where a pleasure. They were informative, hospitable and always quick with a smile. If you are a wine lover who is looking for something different, then this is the place for you. They have kept the inegrity of the grape without sacrificing on flavor. Worth the trip, will be coming back soon.

There are so many more enjoyable and pleasant wineries in the area, including one five minutes down the road. Don’t waste your time coming to this one.
We came here on a beautiful warm Sunday afternoon, typically prime time for wine tastings, so we were a little surprised that there were only two or three other cars in the large parking lot. Once we got inside, it became pretty clear why there was no one there. Despite the fact that there was only one other couple in the (massive and cold) tasting room, we were completely ignored and just stood around awkwardly until we were finally acknowledged and told that we would have to wait until this tasting was finished before we could start our tasting. I have been to MANY wineries all over the Northeast, and all were much busier than this one with a much higher employee to customer ratio, and I have never had to wait for a tasting. I have never seen an employee do one tasting at a time– they easily bounce back and forth, accommodating all the groups. We saw no reason to waste our time waiting, so we just left. Honestly, it was probably a blessing in disguise that we felt so awkward we had to leave, because the man doing the tastings seemed way more interested in hearing himself talk than showing his customers a good time. Their wines could be the best around, but I’ll never come back to try them.

Stoutridge is a very interesting place to visit. First of all it is completely beautiful. Second of all the place is owned and run by scientists! These people have a lot of knowledge and they make wines that are unique and made differently than any other winery in America. Stop in and ask them about their wine!

Great experience touring here. The grounds are beautiful, and the winery building itself is beautiful as well. The owners were extremely knowledgeable and passionate and took time to explain how the wines are made, why they’re made the way they are, and other interesting information.
The wines are made differently, and the uniqueness of the process shows in the taste, which I promptly fell in love with. They make their wines without chemical alteration, opting instead to leave them natural. Since the wine we are used to buying has additives and such so that it can travel better and remain fresh, the taste is quite different from what you’d expect (and in my opinion, much better). I’ll definitely be back to buy more and enjoy the winery.

Very passionate owners who led us through the tasting of these unique wines. Located on a very serene and beautiful plot, with many picnic tables for a packed lunch.
From nyc, we took metro north to beacon, got a $ 35 cab at station. You’ll need to coordinate with cab company to pick you up. I would not recommend doing the wine trail without a car!

We drove in and the grounds looked very nice. When we walked in it was not busy, yet the guy working there could not be bothered to greet us. We thought the tasting was overpriced and the selection of wines was not very good. We walked out without a word from the guy there. Skip this one if you are doing the wine trail.

A wonderful tasting experience: the owner gave us a biochemistry lesson in wine production and we learned a lot. They specialize in eco-​friendly /​non-​chemically produced wines. It was really cool to taste a wine produced with grapes exclusively from the area, unfortunately I didn’t like the taste much. It was a lot of fun but I didn’t like the wine.

We just left this winery after exploring a number of different wineries along the Hudson river this weekend. Stoutridge was amazing. Almost glad we saved it for last or we may not have bought any other wine. The owner Steve encouraged us to take a self guided tour and then walked us through our tasting. The way he and his wife make the wine is truly food (or should I say drink) to table. We will definitely be back! Each one we tasted was delicious!
Today was rainy but what beautiful grounds for a picnic lunch and some time to relax.

If you are looking for a different tasting experience, this is the place. The owner is unique, entertaining and just enjoyable. His knowledge was tremendous. The wines were excellent. He doesn’t add preservatives and you get an authentic tasting wine. Worth the trip to taste what wine should be.

My wife and I did the wine trail and this by far was the most unpleasant visit so far. No doubt they know how to make wine, but how to handle customers must be new. I ask to try the merlot and was told they did not have a bottle open. I only brought a bottle because this was my plan to buy at least one bottle at each winery. Only nice thing I have to say is nice building. I am always up here but will not return.

A fantastic winery and vineyard. The owner and his wife are biochemists who definitely know what they’re doing. Their wines, at least the five (4 whites and 1 red) I had in the sampling, were anything but monotone. The selection for bottle sale is greater than just these. The tastings are done in waves by the owner; when one is done he’ll start the next one shortly after. I liked the vibe of the owners and the place in general and am eager to try the distilled products when they are permitted.

We stumbled across this vineyard last weekend when we had some time to kill in the Highland area. When we first pulled up to the parking area we were struck by two things. One, this was a cell service dead zone (T-​mobile, smh) and two, the space was gorgeous. There is a very still lake, complete with grassy banks, a willow tree or two, and a hornets nest (true story). We kept walking and entered the building/​tasting room. The building itself has two patios, huge, with lots of seating for enjoying the view (or your wine)
We were greeted by the owner and his wife, who informed us that there was a self-​guided tour of the winery, and then a tasting available for $ 8/​pp (for 5 wines, including the glass as a souvenir). We took the self guided tour, which was very informative. This winery is very eco-​friendly. The cellar is underground so as to not use electricity to maintain the temperature, they do not filter their wines, do not use sulfates, and gravity is used as the energy to move the grapes into wine along the process. Very cool.
The owner gave us a very informative tasting experience. We were told he and his wife were both biochemists and therefore very interested in the chemistry of wine making. He told us a bit about his particular wine making process, and what was unique about his wines. The wines we tasted did indeed have some unique aspects (for instance there was the white wine whose name I forgot which was very heavy and actually savory, the first savory white I’ve ever tasted).
All in all a good experience, and worth a visit if you’re on the Shawangunk wine trail.
PS. There is wifi, ask them for the pw, so you can navigate your way back out even without cell service.

The owners are a super friendly biochemist married couple. They make sustainable wine by gravity. The concept is great. The experience is very cool. The view is nice. The house has history and it is beautiful.
Best customer service of all the wineries in the area, by far. He really knew his wines and I left feeling legitimately educated. He was there, but wasn’t in our faces. Poured, educated and then walked away. I really like this.
But the wine… is an acquired taste. We did like one, more for it’s uniqueness than for it’s unbelievable deliciousness.

I wish I could give it four or five stars but I didn’t like any of the wine. They were good but nothing I was really interested in.
The service however was amazing, incredible information about the wines. How it’s all done by gravity and there are no sulfates. Each wine is also aged 3 yeArs before people can taste. We also got a lil magic show. It’s a high quality product that I wish had suited my taste buds.
The venue itself is beautiful. It’d be perfect for any large gathering.

Stoutridge Vineyard, the owners were nice enough but I guess the folks from the city are ruining this place. We saw bus load after bus load of drunken morons pile into here, grab their drinks, and move along to the next place. While Stoutridge makes all natural wines, I found their wines were not to my liking unfortunately. I’m usually one who is eager to buy wines while I’m traveling and I left this Vineyard with nary a bottle.

How dose this place have any stars? So much bitterness and anger about the «competitors» apparently this is the only winery that makes 100% natural wine in north america. Well maybe there is a reason no one else is trying this method. Because WOW this wine was awful as in– rancid.

This place is very architecturally impressive to the eye, laid out well, and out to compete with other bigger wineries in the area such as Brotherhood. Inside is clean, spacious, informative. I really liked the large cask display in the back.
Beyond that, this really isn’t my type of winery. It’s not a bad winery at all, just not one one I’d visit as frequently.
What it has in largesse and pretense, it lacks, IMO, in charm. The long tasting bar had one guy essentially with a loud voice and/​or megaphone talking about the wines. I felt like I was in a lecture hall. The wines were laid out almost in a bulk-​style on the opposite side of the room as the tastings. For as fancy a place as this is, very few of the wines impressed me as distinct compared to other local wineries, a good number of them are blends, and many of them are unfiltered. Their prices are slightly higher than average compared to even the smaller wineries.
Stoutridge is definitely a good winery to include in the Shawangunk wine trail. It’s not high on my favorites list, but you should definitely give the winery a visit and determine for yourself if it’s one you’ll want to visit frequently.

What a find. We had no idea this little gem was so close. First impression, cute little vineyard. We walked into the tasting barn, AMAZING! For something a few hundred years old Jim has this place looking fantastic. The boards removed to redesign the barn were used to build the bathrooms. The window that faces out back reveals a perfect picture of a quaint vineyard when you look out of it. Truly a perfect pictures little vineyard.
Now for the wine maker. Jim introduced himself and started to educate us on his grapes and wines right from the get go. Along with just about anything else you want to know about the grapes, processes, chemical break downs, and of course the delicious wine blends he creates. They only produce 2 different wines and both are his personal blends. OUTSTANDING wines. I’m by no means a wine snob. Just started getting a pallet for wine a few years ago. Didn’t think much of most of the local wines I’ve tried so far at other CT vineyards. Rather surprised I enjoyed both the Red and the White wines here even without pairing with a food. Which normally I need to enjoy a white.
Tasting is only 5 dollars. Small tasting bar and sitting room that is the perfect setting for these wines. Jim and his wife are extremely nice people and have vast knowledge of all aspects of the wine business. If you enjoy talking grapes Jim’s your guy to chat with.
Highly recommend a stop in. Do a tasting and enjoy the sites. 15 dollars a bottle for the wines is a deal. Enjoy.

If you’re fortunate enough to arrive right after opening on a Friday, this is a Friday — Sunday tasting room, you may also be fortunate enough to have owner Steve Osborn doing the pouring at the tasting bar. While he does that he will also provide a tutorial on the complexities and benefits of making wine unprocessed — unfined and unfiltered — as he does at Stoutridge. It’s a great, informal lecture — Steve has a degree oenology and another in food chemistry — and one of the many fun things about this winery.
Those fun things include the owner himself, the lovely setting with a view deck offering tables and chairs and spacious lawn with picnic tables, the beautiful tasting room and the green built facility, including gravity fed technology. (See photos.) But from our visit we’d have to say we don’t necessarily include the wines themselves among the highlights of the visit here. Still, we enjoyed both the crisp, dry Hudson Heritage White (about $ 16 /​bottle as I recall) and the unusual Merlot (about $ 28 /​bottle) to buy a couple of each of them. (The Merlot is from Long Island grapes and it is unlike any other of the varietal we’ve had.)
This is a young winery (first vintage 2006) and the winemaker is passionate about creating good unprocessed wines, so it may be that the wines will continue to grow or it may be that this is just not our «thing» among wines.
While the winery is young for this incarnation, another of the fun things about it is also that like much else in the Hudson River Valley it is steeped in history. The first vines were planted here in the 1700’s. The first winery was opened in 1902 but closed due to prohibition. At which time there was some bootleg distilling done on the property until the 1950’s. And now, with a winery reopened here, the owners are also planning a distillery operation. (Actually they hoped to open it in 2009 but the demand for their wines has slowed down their time to work on the distillery.) How’s that for a cool historical evolution for the site.

The tasting is actually pretty informative. My favorite was the Vidal 2001. The prices are very reasonable too.
