Periodontal literally means «around the tooth»; it is a result of the combination of plaque or bacteria under your gums, genetics, stress, smoking and/​or systemic disease. Periodontitis destroys the tissues and bone that support your teeth. Like heart disease, periodontitis is often «silent’», and patients often are not aware that they have it. Also, like heart disease, periodontitis is a chronic condition and continued therapy is necessary to keep it from actively recurring.

We also treat non-​disease periodontal issues, such as crown lengthening (creating more tooth structure when a crown is needed), and periodontal plastic surgery (gum grafting, root coverage and correcting «gummy smiles»). Once treated, you will be returned to your general practitioner for care.

Our objective is not only to establish a healthy smile, but also to enhance your periodontal knowledge, health, comfort and esthetics.

Dr. Kiya Green Dixie earned her undergraduate degree at Howard University in Washington, D.C. where she graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1993. She earned her D.D.S. from the University of Maryland in 1998. She then completed her General Practice Residency at the Washington D.C. Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Her Periodontal training was completed at the Medical College of Virginia where she also received her certificate in Periodontics, IV Sedation and a Masters Degree in the Dental Sciences. In May of 2006, Dr. Green-​Dixie became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.
