Steak ‘n Shake

Horrendous service coupled with old food thrown together last minute (maybe spit on) makes this location one of the worst Steak and Shake experiences… No. Worst restaurant experiences I’ve ever had. In short, even getting the attention of server to get waters and drinks took 20 minutes. This is AFTER we watched servers take the order several tables that sat down after us. Once our orders were finally taken, drinks took another 15 minutes to get. One shake took 25 minutes to get after reminding our server we still hadn’t gotten it. Half an hour later our food finally arrived while the groups (with far more people in them, mind you) that sat down after us already got their food, paid for their meals, and left. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse, the food was just… Horrific. A guacamole steak burger with half a spoon of guacamole and the bun half off the side of the plate, stuck to the cheese is not what anyone is expecting to see after waiting for over an hour for their food. I guess the cooks just didn’t feel like making an actual burger but just throwing the ingredients on a plate and calling it what was ordered. If you’re looking for an authentic Steak and Shake experience, look else where.

Haven’t been to a steak and shake for a long time and I won’t go back. While the food was ok, the service was horrific. Not from all servers as it was take out but from the manager. Asked for special order for one burger and repeated to the general
Manager twice. Yep you guessed it. Wrong. With no apologies or acknowledgement. Rest of food cold and shakes melted by time fixed. I think he needs to find another job. As for wait time, the disorganization explains why it took forever.

This place has lost a repeat customer. Nearly every other night, a co-​worker and I will drive through steak and shake, but tonight the drive-​through was broken. We walked inside to order, being the only ones there, and the cashier takes my friends order. After he pays, the cashier walks away. I sat at the stool waiting for his return so I can order my food, but the cashier only comes back when another customer (who seemed to be a friend of the cashiers) comes in the door. He grabs a menu and they are talking like long lost brothers, when my friend says rather loudly «Weren’t you getting food?» As im about to say yes, the new-​comer orders a monstrosity or an order, and the cashier pays no attention to the fact that I have now been waiting for a good 10 minutes to order. The cashier accepts the mans order, and still pays no attention to the fact that I have been waiting this whole time. A few minutes later, he returned with my friends food and says «you guys have a good night». I would have, but i didnt even get the chance to get what i wanted, and now steak and shake has lost my business.

This has to be the worst steak and shake I have ever been in waited 20 minutes for a server to even acknowledge that we were there then the server had dirty finger nails and hands so then he never came back to the table once. And then the take home box that they have us was filled with dry sorry water. I will never go there every again I would have given it a zero star but that is not possible.

I never come here expecting to be wowed, but I wanted a quick dinner and planned to use a coupon. Everything was fine except the waiter never brought out our check or acknowledged us after bringing our food. Went to pay the check at the register and they wouldn’t take the coupon for a free drink because it wasn’t a «soft drink»…it was an iced tea! Hahaha. Jokes on me. If it were me handling the situation with a customer I would’ve comped the iced tea… but whatever. Why lure customers with coupons and not honor them? Drives me nuts. Won’t work on me again.

I have been going to this steak n’ shake for years now. Mostly because after 10 PM there is nowhere else open in the area. Wow does the quality vary. Both in the food and the service. Sometimes I get a great waiter who serves the food quickly while it is warm. Other times it takes a half-​hour to get a burger and fries that are cold at time of arrival. I am not expecting a gourmet meal here, just a quick burger, fries, and a shake. I generally always see staff standing around talking to each other or smoking in the back parking lot rather than actually doing their jobs. Also, the resturaunt is always dirty. Tables have marks all over them, the floors are filled with dirt. They could be cleaning instead of smoking. At least the shakes are good. No matter how long it takes for them to come out.

Imagine being hungry in the middle of the night. You text one of your friends to see if they wanna go get a midnight snack. Unfortunately, most food places are closed at the time. There is probably only one option: Steak ‘n Shake.
Ahh yes, the infamous Steak ‘n Shake. Nobody seems to want to go here, rather it’s an unplanned event when you’re hungry and nothing else is open. I mean don’t get me wrong, once in a while I crave a Salted Caramel Pretzel shake, but I don’t think their food is to die for.
Most Steak ‘n Shakes have a good rep of being really dank. This one however is clean most of the times I’ve been here. The food is always cooked well and the fries are always hot. However what turns me off the most about this particular Steak ‘n Shake is the service. I understand on busy nights service is expected to be slow. I understand the waiters/​waitresses/​cooks are trying their hardest to satisfy customers. But once in a while, literally no one will be there in the middle of the day, and our food will take up to 45 minutes to be brought out. I’m not one to complain about this, but the inconsistency of this Steak ‘n Shake’s service is atrocious.
Again, I understand the staff is trying their best but I feel like it shouldn’t take 45 minutes to get food for two people in a restaurant that only has three tables to be served. This Steak ‘n Shake is just like any other one: affordable food, old aesthetics, and decent shakes. But this Steak ‘n Shake in particular lacks something most restaurants have, decent service.
If you’re hungry, and a very patient person, and there’s no one else to go, then hit up this Steak ‘n Shake next time you’re hungry at 1:00am.

This place is dirty! Unfortunately, we didn’t realize how disgusting it was until after we ate. The table was stained and damaged and our salt shaker was empty except for a little bit that was «glued» inside of it. Gross, but the worst was the men’s bathroom. It had no paper towels except for dirty ones that were overflowing from the garbage on to the floor. The sink had a disturbing ring around it like it may have sat with backed up water in it for weeks. We told the male manager about it and I was going to check out the women’s bathroom, but I was too grossed out by the thought. I saw another review on here stating the same thing. Obviously they have done nothing about it. Spent some time in my own bathroom after eating here. We won’t be eating here or at any other Steak and Shake again!

I’ve always been a pretty big fan of this Steak ‘n Shake. I come here when I know I want a decent amount of food for not much money, and when I want that food quickly. Or when I just want a delicious shake.
Coupons are mailed out at least twice a month, and the cashier has always been willing to accept more than one, or apply one to more than one meal. That keeps me coming back. Today, for instance, both my dad and I were able to get a Steak ‘n Shake meal with a burger, two sides, and a large shake, for $ 6 each on one coupon.
Some other reviews on here knock the service, but I can honestly say I’ve never had a notably bad serving experience here, and I’ve probably been here at least 50 times. It’s not always exceptional, but it’s never less than expected.
Their shakes are pretty great. I do wish they were a little bit thicker, but they offer about 100 flavors, which is amazing. Their menu is also pretty dynamic, and they offer seasonal burgers and melts.
I come here because it’s a bit higher quality than other fast food restaurants but for about the same price. Thumbs up, Steak ‘n Shake.

The burgers were very good the fries very greasy.

Then looking around, the walls were almost as disgusting.

Got here at 1:15 AM. Served: 1:50 AM. 35 minutes for a fast food restaurant? Despicable. There are literally eight people here and the server decides to go out and smoke with this girl at the bar instead of serving us our clearly done food in the window. I am beyond disgusted with Rob’s performance tonight. I get not liking to work nights but your customers should ALWAYS come first. My food is lukewarm and soggy. I will not be tipping tonight.
Update: IT IS NOW 2:15 AND MY WAITER HAS NOT BEEN SEEN SINCE 1:50 WHEN WE GOT OUR FOOD.

Wow can’t believe service could have ever been this bad. Lifetime ban from all steak and shakes across the country. Really this is how you treat a customer that complains about you guys not getting the food right. Lies from the waitress/​manager claiming that we used foul language agianst her. Calling the police on us not even telling us that your doing it so we could stay and explain our side. And then corporate when we called because steak and shake refused to drop the ticket. The waitress coming to court to say that it was all true. Really. All this because the waitress claimed my wife called her a bitch. Wow steak and shake ill take your lifetime ban agianst my wife and never give you my money agian.

I always like a good Steak N Shake.
The trouble is finding one with good service. When I say good service, I’m specifically meaning Wait Staff who are pleasant and not grumpy and do a good job in fulfilling your order. A person who can make a good shake, and a cook who at least takes a little pride in the job. This may sound basic stuff, but it seems Steam N Shake restaurants are not wise of this because I’ve been to several now here in Norther Illinois which are failing this concept.
HOWEVER… this location is Great! The wait staff are friendly, cheery attitude and do well in getting your order right the first time. The person who makes the shakes also does a good job and they don’t come out runny. The cook here also takes pride in their work as the burgers are good and come out with a nice presentation.
Glad I found a good Steak N Shake close by!
