Every suburb has a hibachi grill. We are lucky in Mckinney to have a few, but Shogun is our most beloved. This is the place your kids beg you to come for every special occasion. Why do kids like Shogun? It’s for the show. When you walk in to the dimly lit restaurant, what first hits you is the aroma. You smell the rice and veggies frying on a open grill. Then you see the flames rising high in the air. «Hibachi Style» is a Japanese term for Japanese teppenyaki cooking. You are sitting around a large hot plate with many people. Usually you will have other parties join you for your meal. The other diners and yourself order at the same time and the chef prepares the meals all together at once. The chef performs the cooking with a theatrical flair. His slicing and dicing with such enthusiasm and cracking jokes. He lights a large stack or raw onions to look like the shape of the volcano with flames shooting high out the top. Once the chef has even let my son spin some eggs behind the grill while he was making fried rice. Now, when I come with my family… I’m not really a hibachi foodie. I get the sushi. I usually get the sushi combo. It comes with 7 pieces of sushi and a California roll. It is all freshly prepared at the sushi counter. You can even watch it being made. The food is good and always brings smiles to my boys’ faces. Yes, the interior is outdated. Yes, it is more than I would spend if we ate at Chick fil a. Yet, you can’t put a price tag on fond memories.

Pretty good dinner reservations are a joke, chef was Hispanic instead of Japanese, chef was very stale when it came to his humor I’ve read junie b jones books funnier than that guy

Ate at Shogun tonight for the first time. The service was fast and our food was prepared well(and pretty quick). The food was very good and the portions were very generous. Will try again at some point in the future.

This was an interesting and overall very entertaining experience, i was there to try the hibashi grill and to see the chef preparing my meal in front of me. So these are the thing i learned: — Have your camera ready. The chef will do some neat tricks like bouncing an egg on the spoon before cracking it or make onion rings to spit fire like a volcano among other jokes. Be ready! — Be ready to have a conversation with strangers. Youll be sitting next to other people sharing the grill, everybody is super friendly under these circumstances, dont be shy. — Go there hungry. The fried rice is not typical, they really make a meal out of it by putting many things in it, and is not even the main entrée! — Make the chef prepare you a salsa. If you order salsa they will give it to you on a small cup for you to dip, ask the chef to make it with garlic butter on the grill, believe me! — Know your options. If you go for hibashi you tell that to the waiter so she’ll take you to the grill tables, if you go for sushi you go to a regular table/sushi bar, they do have a small bar at the entrance so you can hang there also. if they have space, it is small and it feels like a small town bar, you’ll be right in the front door which may be annoying. Overall: Quality steak, shrimp, sushi and atmosphere. Will come back :) Cheers :) v

Very overpriced but it’s a mainstay for the area crowd who isn’t aware of other hibachi options a few miles down the road. Hands down, the BEST Asian salad dressing I’ve ever tasted — all the same flavors as others’ but perfectly balanced in flavor, texture, and water-content. Dragon roll(California roll topped with eel) was tasty but light on the eel and the California roll was unremarkable. Only got the Hibachi Veggie dinner(zucchini, broccoli, onions, carrot slices, and I think what were potato chip-thin slices) and it was good but came without the two shrimp the other meals get. The most disappointing part of the meal was what should’ve been the easiest part to get right: dry, chewy white rice! The other reviews on here rave about their fried rice so maybe they undercook it so it absorbs the flavors when it’s cooked on the hibachi with the sauces but both my friend and I were surprised by how bad the rice was. We wondered if it had been left sitting out a while or what? I also got charged $ 2.25 for my water but was too tired on a Friday night to try and locate our order-taker to fix his error and just let it go. My friend’s son LOVED his hibachi chicken specifically made with only soy sauce but they only carried one flavor of Marble(Ramune) soda which was disappointing. Our chef was very friendly and smiled which was nice(too often, hibachi chefs come across as kind of grouchy). All in all, if I return, it will be for lunch on Wednesdays. Apparently their sushi is half price then? $ 32 for one roll, salad, soup and vegetables plus 18% tip. Too many other GREAT, less expensive hibachi restaurants with more food options in a 20 minute drive radius to put this one on regular rotation.

Had Shogun for the first time today in years! Still as good as I remember. Had the chicken and shrimp. Yum. The mustard sauce was great too. My only complaints were that my food needed more salt, quite a bit actually, and the ginger sauce, which is usually my favorite part of everything, was rather thin and runny. Didn’t have the body I’m used to where it would actually coat the meat or veggies you choose to dip in it. But it still tastes good. Overall, great experience other than those two things. Will definitely be going back. We usually go to Jinbeh in Frisco, but this was a nice change and will go into the rotation! Still a great place, Michael and Joe!

TAKE A GOODLOOKATYOURINITIALBILLANDFINALBILL! Our final bill had an 18% gratuity tacked onto it with an ADDITIONAL tip line. The menu says that there is an 18% gratuity added for parties of 6 or more. There were two in our party and we were seated at a hibachi table with six strangers. When we brought this up to the manager, she passed it off as a mistake and offered to correct our bill. We got the feeling that they make this«mistake» and hope that patrons don’t pay attention and double tip. The food was good and service was good but I can’t recommend a place where the management seems to be unethical.

I just moved to McKinney a few months ago. My daughter and I are fans of hibachi and sushi. I use to manage one. We got lost looking for a Thai place so my daughter suggested sushi. It was a pretty packed rustic busy restaurant on a Friday eve. The hibachi tables were full with people waiting to be seated and it was that way when we left too. My daughter and I sat front row at the sushi bar while Joe(an owner) and Jack prepared our food. We usually order salmon skin hand roll at every sushi restaurant we go to. Most the time they don’t have it on the menu. Joe made our hand rolls which took 15 minutes but it’s understandable for it to take time bc it was fresh and we like it crispy. In the mean time Joe hooked us up with a delicate piece of fish off menu. It was delicious. It reminded me of my mom’s fish from her authentic Vietnamese cooking. The hand rolls were really good too! Tho the restaurant was packed the staff some how made sure we were ok on a regular basis. Waiter Than, wait staff, chefs and owner were really nice. We will be back.

This place inspired me to start making fried rice at home! The fried rice here is amazing! Also, the shrimp they serve you here is so fresh and really well seasoned! It’s so much fun to watch the hibachi chefs do their thing and the guys that do cook for you are all friendly! You really can tell that they form a relationship with their customers because the first few times we came here customers at different tables would talk to other chefs at the other tables! The service is adequate for getting refills and anything else you need and they take their time to clean the area so you know the tables you sit at are clean. The sushi rolls here are pretty good here. I always say to not dip the sauced sushi rolls in soy because it defeats the purpose of ordering the special rolls in the first place. Overall, this is the best fried rice you can order off a menu anywhere.

What is going on at Shogun? It’s been a few months since I’ve been here, and something has definitely changed. The food quality is still quite exceptional, delicious, in fact. But the service is terrible. The hibachi chef was delightful this evening, but the waiter was terrible. Yes, he was busy, but we waited 10 minutes in a non-air conditioned dining room to even be acknowledged by this guy. Then he forgets our drinks, after having been seated for over 20 minutes I finally got my ice water. Back to the no A/C bit, yeah, it’s 107 outside and the place is only being cooled by one giant fan in the corner of the dining room. A hibachi grill with no air conditioning… is this a joke?! The only reason I’m giving three starts is because the food is still quite delicious. But the front-of-house service needs a serious make-over. Or at least staff up, if your wait staff can’t seem to handle a Monday night. And it was so unpleasant having to sweat through our entire meal. EDIT: I feel as though in the last couple months this place has really gotten it together. I’ve been back a couple times since my boyfriend was able to convince me to try it again and I’ve been pleasantly surprised with each visit back. I will say it seems as though the clueless staff has been weened out. Also, after getting to know some of the employees as well as the owners, there are a few new must-haves with each meal. First off, if you like spicy sauces, ask for the Michael sauces, one is more of a spicy paste and the other is a savory, sweet and spicy sauce.(you won’t regret it) Also, when you order the fried rice, I highly recommend getting some extra egg and a little extra butter, yeah, extra butter, trust me, it’s a game changer. Lastly, don’t be afraid to tell the chefs exactly what you’re wanting. I have never had an issue with attitude from these guys and in telling them what I want, I get it every time. Now, this doesn’t mean you get to be a pain in their ass and they’re going to be okay with it, but if you ask nicely, they’ll do pretty much anything to make you happy. The chefs are indeed great when it comes to making sure you’re satisfied with your meal.

I went with the BF and we were greeted right away. We were sat with another family of parents and three kids. Lucky us they were nice people and were there for their birthdays. I am usually a white rice over fried rice person but the BF said their fried rice is more than definitely worth it and the family agreed on it too so I went with their recommendation. We got the Filet Mignon and Lobster combo for two. I also ordered the«Hurricane» and it was awesome!!! For $ 8.50, it was more than worth it. It was decorated with a huge piece of pineapple, a cherry, and an umbrella. Our chef, Michael, was extremely friendly and sweet. He chatted with us and always made sure everything tasted well. He also entertained the little girl at our table and just made all our time great! Portion was very big. We went on a Wednesday and coincidentally they had $ 1 sushi!!! So much food!!!

Bad Surprise for Father’s Day My teenage daughter made reservations for lunch on Father’s Day. She was so excited because she was going to pay — this was her Father’s Day gift. Imagine her shock when we arrived and there was a small note on the check in stand saying they were«only serving dinner today.» In other words, the prices were DOUBLE what she had budgeted to pay. We could have gone somewhere else, but we would have needed reservations. We won’t be going back to Shogun anytime soon and certainly not on a holiday. Be sure to call ahead and ask whether they are sticking it to patrons for lunch on the day you decide to go for lunch. You never know… By the way, I ended up paying for the meal and my daughter was sad that she had nothing to give him for Father’s Day. If I had known we were going to spend that kind of money for lunch, we would have gone to Del Frisco!

Short wait, strong drinks, and the hibachi is great. Sushi not so much but that’s ok. Dinner for two with drinks, sushi, and food 100 bucks.

I’ve been going here for years and have always enjoyed the food. Last night I was mortified to see that they fill both the regular soy sauce containers and the low sodium containers with the same regular soy sauce. This is very disappointing as I have been using the low sodium dispensers this whole time due to blood pressure issues. I watched a waitress fill red and green containers all around us with the same full sodium bottle. This is misleading and just plain wrong to do to customers.

Best sushi in McKinney or Dallas worth the drive we make the drive from Dallas just for sushi. The chefs are amazing they remember their customers and are more than happy to adjust any roll yo your liking or will even create a roll per your request. I have not tried the habachi but the sushi is all I need to be happy

If you LOVE to dine on excuses, you will leave with a full belly. I ordered off the sushi menu with my girlfriend, and most of the rest of the party ordered hibachi. I had to repeat my order 3 times, and after that she came back a 4th time to confirm it. At this point I knew I was pretty screwed. Part of our order never arrived and when the bill came, it lead to a full out argument with the manager in front of the other customers and our party. Choice parts of that argument went something like«If you went into an AMERICAN restaurant…» and«THATNOTMYFAULT!» The other members of our party all had problems with their checks also. They initially ran my card for $ 230! This is more than 5x what our bill should have been. We finally left after paying for things we didn’t eat, and were glad to be done.

Have dined here many times as the grand daughters really like«The Volcano Place». Service was good for Fathers Day and we didn’t have long to wait. Beware of the uneven sidewalks around the sides of the building to access parking. I tripped and sprawled flat out, skinning hands and bruising knees. The waitresses were prompt today, but there was just the dinner menu at lunch though there is usually a Sunday special after church. So, higher prices to cover extra staff for Father’s Day. The chef did a fine job with the food and accommodated special requests. It was clean and I still recommend it. Just watch where you step outside.

My family has been coming to this restaurant for more than 5 years. Based on our last 2 visits, my opinion is that Shogun is going down hill. Last night we waited 30 minutes for a table because we had 8 people in our group. The wait was fine, but while in the bar area, I tried to get a drink, but was skipped over in order to assist«regulars». I ended up not be able to order a drink before being seated. When we arrived at the table our drink order was taken, but I received the wrong Saki. It took a while for the waitress to return in order to get this corrected. It was Thursday, and they advertise half priced Saki, but when the bill came, I was charged full price. When I asked for it to be corrected, the waitress commented that not all Saki was half priced. I point to the sign that said, «Thursday — Half Priced Saki.» It did not state that only some Saki was half priced. I lost and paid full price. The soup and salad arrived at the same time. No drinks were ever refilled throughout the meal. The sauces(ginger/mustard) were more watery and less flavorful than in many past visits. The fried rice was bland(lack of seasoning). The appetizer shrimp was served after my steak. My filet was overcooked. All of these things are not what we are used to after so many years and by a chef we have had many times before. With so many other places we can dine in the area, I feel our money is best spent elsewhere. Sorry to see this place headed in this direction. It has been one of our favorite places for a long time.

I don’t remember the last time I received worse service, maybe never. My first clue that this experience was not going to end well should’ve been when I noticed my seat at the table was covered in a sticky grime. We were basically ignored the entire time. We arrived second to the table but nobody would take our sushi order. Around an hour later, still no sushi. The Hibachi guy started to do his thing so we finally gave up and cancelled our order. Mind you, the entire restaurant, including the sushi bar, was DEAD on a Friday night so there is really no excuse for an hour wait for TWO rolls. Our actual Hibachi meal was very mediocre and pretty bland. I could’ve gone to Panda Express if I wanted fried rice and some generic chicken. The icing on the cake was, we were visited by managers twice. Well, our table was. We were seated with some regulars. The first manager spoke to everyone at the table EXCEPT us. The second manager asked if my husband wanted another drink, the first person to notice all night that his beer was empty. So, if you’re following along, they neglected to refill alcohol and we had to cancel our sushi order. Basically, the two most expensive items in a restaurant, they dropped the ball on. How will these people stay in business? Our waitress never offered my husband a water, despite being out of beer for over an hour. I was never offered a refill on my drink, either, until after we requested the check. Oh, and a note to the restaurant if they read this: one guy at our table was exceedingly drunk. Our waitress was *maybe* 17 and should’ve had the good sense to cut him off. A guy that intoxicated poses a liability for your establishment.
