Sandy Shores Campground & Resort

My boyfriend and I tent camped here over a weekend. It was toward the end of the season and all that was left were campers and mobile homes. We were put on a full-​service site as the tent sites were being re-​seeded for the season. Our site was right near the bathrooms and we only had neighbors on two sides. The staff at the front desk were very friendly and were helpful in checking us in and getting settled in the area. Nice beach access across the street with beautiful views of the dunes. Quick walk to the store and activities. Easy drive to both the dunes and lighthouse. Nice and quiet location, unlike the noisy visitors next door at the state park. Only cons were that the pool closes early in the season and they dont sell wood on site. Good thing there are tons of locals selling it.

Worst campgrounds at Silver Lake. Don’t waste your money and stay at the state park. The staff at this place was the most rude and inconsiderate people I’ve ever dealt with when camping.

This is our favorite place to camp. 3 families. The pool is heated for those days that are cool but the kids love to swim. They have a new couple that takes care of the pool and the bathrooms. The kids call the woman the pool nazi! They are all 15 and older and can swim without our supervision but not in her eyes! She stopped them every time to ask ages or year born. Luckily one is 18 so they were allowed with out us. All of us feel like we are constantly being watched. I think she takes her post WAY too serious. Lol. The bathrooms are always well kept.

I was completely stunned to see that this campground doesn’t have any reviews! I just got back home today and was hoping to book one more camping trip this summer. Not in the least surprised that they are booked up for the rest of the summer. I just want to acknowledge how great this campground is! For the past 4 years, this has become my getaway with my family and friends.
PROS:
–Booking is a breeze! The staff is very accommodating.
–Extremely secure. You can’t drive in unless you have a sticker on your car (that you get at registration) Huge plus for those who freak out about leaving any belongings laying around their site.
–Dog friendly
–the bathrooms are ALWAYS clean!
–heated pool which they clean every morning.
— Park for the kids and a basketball court. Sporting equipment can be rented at the office.
–Free Wifi! Which was a plus for my friend who wanted to download a book on her Nook.
–A store connected that has towels, food, liquor (quite a variety!), snacks, ice-​cream, and so on.
–Across the street and you have access to a little private beach overlooking the sand dunes which you can also drive to.
–Once you drive off the campground, you are surrounded by little shops and restaurants.
And for the CONS…
Well…ummm.I got nothing!
It’s worth the 4 hour drive from Chicago.
