3 Angels On Broad

I’ve eaten here once, but the fried chicken might be some of the best I’ve ever had. The crust was thick and crunchy and the chicken juicy. I can’t even remember what my side dish was, that’s not important.

Boo! Seems I spoke too enthusiastically about the new owners. Tapas! Another bloody tapas con job. The day will come when tapas will go away. If you wait on the bank of the river long enough…

It’s infuriating to wait 25 minutes for a grilled cheese and a bowl of veggie pasta. The food is so good (why I’m giving 2 stars and not 1) but it’s not even possible to justify the wait time. It wasn’t like they were slammed. There were tables empty and it was around 1pm. Our server had poor multitasking skills as well.

I had read they have new owners and read that Broad is so hot. We started off our night on Broad at Wiseacre for a happy. Fun! Crowded! Lively! Then we walked (in the dark) to 3 Angels. It was really quiet out — and there were only two other couples there finishing dinners. Awkward. I had a red wine, and it was underpoured … hate that at $ 9/​glass. I had a grilled cheese with fake bacon and it was … really good. BUT my hubby’s food looked sad. He ordered a full order of pasta (priced at I believe $ 10+), and he got a kid’s small cereal bowl of pasta, no nice presentation, no bread — looked like yesterday’s leftovers. I felt so bad I shared half my meal. Deal-​breaker as I liked my food but his portion was laughable.

Delicious! The drinks were divine and the brunch selection was amazing. We have found our go to brunch spot!

This is slowly becoming one of my favorite brunch places. The Weekend brunch is great. Can’t really go wrong with anything on that menu. The atmosphere is very cool and laid back. It’s a really small place and I think that makes it even better!

Grilled Panella cheese rubbed with herbs
served with toasted rye drizzled with balsamic.
— The cheese was a little bland and I wish there would been more rye toast points.
Gouda cheeseburger with fries and bacon
— very good but a little dry
Service was friendly and warm
It seems like the food tries to be upscale but the space doesn’t match the menu.
I think they should go the other way and serve more comfort food and drink

I got some food to go and the food was of the same quality as it is when dining in (Angel wraps with tofu and a blackened tilapia po-​boy).
The po-​boy was good and the wraps were good as well but the wraps were… not wrapped up. I called in a pick up order and walked literally around the corner to get it so it’s not like it shifted around in the car or anything. The wraps were all over the place in the to-​go box. Might I suggest using a little more lettuce to truly form a wrap as in wrapped all the way around, or at least some toothpicks to hold everything together.

We visited on a recent Thursday night because I had been wanting to try the place for a long while. The décor is super cool with an imaginative use of old vinyl records as wall art. We had a great appetizers that was a soft cheese topped with fresh hrbs and balsamic drizzle served with rye toasts. I had the Tilapia as my entrée, the fish was a large portion but the beurre blanc sauce that was served on top was waaayyy too salty. I would like to try again for Brunch, I have heard that it is really good.

Used to love this place for vegan biscuits and gravy. Were drenched in peppery gravy. Not any more. Were dry so asked for more gravy for that and the extremely plain tofu scramble and got charged for it. The service has always been slow yet friendly. Coffee has always been hard to come by. Being newly vegan was really looking forward to coming here again but oh well.

The atmosphere here is wonderful. Especially on a Sunday morning. I highly recommend the Chiqualles. The cheese grits are wonderful also. Lots of vegetarian choices.

Came here for brunch not too long ago and was pretty unimpressed that they didn’t offer any discounted brunch drinks like $ 5 bloody Mary’s and mimosas. Was also a little annoyed that every time we asked a question, our server pointed to the black board to show us our answer. Like we should have read it instead of asking her for help, even though it’s her job to help us. The cheese plate was really good and I don’t really remember what I ordered so I guess it wasn’t really memorable. I would go back, but I wasn’t a huge fan. Nothing blew me away.

I had to update! I’m 90% certain they have new owners or management since my last review. I’m obsessed with their brunch! And Broad Ave is booming, honey. It is THE place to be right now.
Their grilled cheese is literally the best grilled cheese I’ve ever had in my entire life… and I am a grilled cheese addict, expert, connoisseur, whatever you want to call it. I know my grilled cheese… and their’s is the best thing in town.
There is a full bar so you can get your drink on plus the place is decorated super funky and eclectic… I just really like the vibe of this place. Unique, fresh, Memphis.

I was super excited to find a new brunch place. Sometimes the Beauty Shop is hard to get into, and sometimes I don’t want to pay $ 17 for eggs benedict at Alchemy, so I was in search of a new place. I rarely frequent the Broad St. area, and this place got mixed reviews, but it did get a Food Channel shout out and some very excellent reviews so I went… and it was great!
Laid back atmosphere that I found charming, not so crowded you couldn’t get a table but plenty of folks there. Service was lovely and everyone at our table was thoroughly pleased with their food. Bloodys and mimosas were only $ 5. However, they make their own bloody mary mix, which I wasn’t a fan of — lacked horse radish, salt, pepper… it just kinda tasted like tomato juice. I read in a review they don’t have hot sauce — they do now, so no need to tote your own. :-)
I’ll definitely be back.

Divey place. The food is ok. It’s got that hipster vibe that a lot of folks like these days. Not knocking it, just painting a picture of the place. Their big seller is the colossus burger, which is a burger… There are limited daily specials which are pretty decent. I say it is worth checking out and at least getting the feel of this area «Broad». Wiseacre brewery is right across the street so you will be able to fit right in if you wear skinny jeans and BCG glasses.

Stopped at 3 Angels’ Diner when I was passing through Memphis in December 2013. Small, very basic diner with a full bar.
Everyone who worked there was really nice (and I loved their T-​shirts!), and the food was pretty tasty. I got the veggie plate, which was comprised of three items on their veggie list. The portion was small, but turned out to be enough for a light lunch.
There’s not a ton of room to sit, but it’s definitely worth a stop.

Three Angels stole my heart last year, when I stopped in on a date just for some coffee and lemon icebox pie for dessert (try it!!!). The place has a more hip, relaxed, cool vibe (love love love the rotating local art); the staff are so sweet, friendly and attentive, and the owners regularly come out to ask how you are and how the food is; and the Sunday brunch takes the crown. You will get great service, great food, and a great taste for local diner fare. All at a very low price.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I love Brother Juniper’s and Bryant’s still as an occasional treat, but Three Angels has an amazing brunch menu that is tasty, light, well-​balanced, and homey all at the same time. I am a huge fan of the Farmer’s Frittata, friends love the Kitchen Sink, and all of their food is prepared and seasoned well. The garlic cheese grits are so good I could take it home in tubs. I love this place because it has all of the elements of a good Southern breakfast/​brunch, but doesn’t leave you feeling like you have to be rolled out or like you ate your weight in grease, which actually masks the true flavors of food. It’s cool that a restaurant focuses on showcasing the flavors of the food itself and doesn’t need to rely on pounds of additives or butter or grease or cheese to dress that up. The menu is a farm fresh, healthier and more balanced take on the dishes that we treasure.
I regularly go to their brunch on Sunday, and for $ 11 leave having had coffee, oj or mimosas depending on the kind of day it is haha, the Farmer’s Frittata (with bacon, garlic cheese grits and toast). Amazing deal. Check it out!

Cute Memphis café /​diner, with breakfast lingering on the lunch menu and some creative items as well. Unfortunately, when we showed up at 1 PM, they were out of some menu items.
SETTING: Light café /​dinner atmosphere with these huge awesome paintings of eggs on the wall. No booths, just tables and a full bar on the side.
FOOD: Menu is on the healthier /​more creative side of diner food, with a number of things popping out for a vegetarian, including veg bacon. There isn’t much in the way of salads, but the chickpea burger was delicious, and the kale portion was quite generous (although a tad too salty).
SERVICE: Our waitress was fine, but unremarkable. As I said above, they were out of a few menu items, so not everyone got their first choice of entrée. But that’s not her fault – kitchen should plan better.

Yesterday I revisited 3 Angels Diner after learning about the change in ownership and how some changes had been made.
I have to say I am EXTREMELY satisfied and even grateful that this change happened. The entire place was better, the atmosphere was calmer and more soothing. I didn’t see any bartenders sneezing/​coughing/​sticking bandage covered fingers into drinks, and the minor changes to the menu are to the benefit of everyone. I didn’t try their bloody mary’s this time around, BUT I did have their mango-​lime aid (Which was their «Ade of the day») and it was fantastic.
I also don’t stick to every surface I lean on anymore — a welcomed change. I enjoyed the addition of simple table covers and love that they kept the basic aesthetic, while cleaning the place up.
Service was prompt and friendly, and prices were still reasonable.
Food was good — they added a short stack of traditional pancakes to the menu which were good, if only slightly dry. The grits I FEEL would be better normally, as it appeared that I got the semi-​gelatinous spoonful that, in my experience, tends to either be from the bottom of the pot, or from grits that have been sitting out awhile (we got there very shortly after opening). The bacon itself was fantastic and my girlfriend absolutely enjoyed her vegan sausage and biscuits.
The staff there also did a fantastic job and actually understanding what it means to be a vegan, and even went out of their way to make sure her food didn’t touch mine.
While I don’t feel the magic of the early days, I am pleased to be able to add 3 Angels back onto my places to visit for brunch.

I landed in Three Angels Diner one sunday for brunch. I never thought I’d end up here. I assumed this was a biker bar of some sort that served cheap beer and soggy sandwiches. I assure you I saw neither of these elements during my visit. Food was not soggy and they actually have a full bar! It’s an artsy little place that features local art on the walls and has old record covers used to decorate the bar top. The servers were amazing. They were friendly, patient with my indecisiveness, and very prompt all around. I ordered the kitchen sink which is a combo of a variety of things thrown together (eggs, potatos, sausage, bacon, grits…). Surprisingly it was not overly oily or seasoned. It was cooked just right and tasted wonderful. They also had several cocktails available for $ 5, so I ordered the champagne margarita. It was strong but delicious! I highly recommend trying it.
I really enjoyed the atmosphere, service, food, and price. As I was writing this I was thinking 4 stars, because there is something strange to me about giving 5 stars to a diner breakfast joint (I don’t value big breakfasts like most I guess), however there is absolutely nothing I’d change about Three Angels to make it better — so they get a 5 star from me! I will visit again and will certainly show this place off to my friends who visit from out of town.

Server returned to say the owner refused.
Will likely never return. Would have gladly paid to add cheese. Jeez!
