History

Established in 2011.

Blues City Skates is a local skate shop owned and operated by a Memphis Roller Derby rollergirl and a former ice/​roller hockey player. There was nowhere in Memphis to buy roller skating equipment, especially specialized derby and hockey equipment so the shop idea was born. Soon after, a website was designed so that Blues City could compete with other online Skate shops run by other rollergirls around the USA. We are located on the Highland Strip and support local small businesses and the getting fit movement that includes things like The Greater Memphis Greenline, Memphis Roller Derby, Skatelife Memphis, Tobey field skate park and Shelby Farms.

Business Owner

Emily began skating with Memphis Roller Derby in early 2010 and as soon as she strapped on her first pair of skates, knew it was the thing for her. After a lot of practice and work, she was drafted to a home team and then the Memphis Roller Derby travel team. After skating for awhile and needing new equipment, she realized her only option was to buy online or go to trade shows to check out equipment. Being an entrepreneurial spirit, she couldn’t shake the thought of opening a skate shop. In 2011, she partnered with a former ice/​roller hockey player who wanted a piece of what would become Memphis’ first skater owned skate shop that specializes in roller skates for people of all ages including inline and quad skates.
