Dog Obedience College of Memphis

Drew trained Heidi, my 72 lb. black lab mix, shortly after I moved to Evergreen. Heidi actually met Drew when she escaped my restraints on move-​in day, chased a squirrel across the street while ignoring my panicked yelling to come back, and narrowly missed being hit by a car. Heidi is lazy and stubborn (yet all lab: lovable and loyal as well), and I had adopted her shortly before the move. She had never worn a collar or been on a leash, and while she sometimes sat on command, she was not manageable. She also had fear aggression toward dogs so bad that I could not take her to the dog park or let her be near other dogs, and no dogs could visit my house (an impediment to socializing with my sister, her then-​boyfriend/​now-​husband, and their dog Mellie).
When Heidi finished her 3 – 4 weeks of training with Drew, she was completely different. She had door manners (waited to come in until I said so), walked by my side on the leash, came when I called her, and even was able to let dogs in the house and go to the dog park. We can play fetch off-​leash at Williamson Park, and I do not worry that she will run away or into the street. We also go to Bass Pro on occasion, and I never worry about what she will do in the crowds of people.
Yes, she does have the shock collar, but I tried it on myself and it was not bad at the low level (which is sufficient to ensure Heidi’s obedience and advocated by Drew). Plus, she is obedient while wearing it without me having to use the shock function – and she even obeys when she is not wearing it. Just last week, I let her out of the car wearing only her normal collar, and she took off after a squirrel and started to run into the street – just as she had on move-​in day. And just as on move-​in day, a car was approaching. But this time, Heidi responded to my firm, loud, slightly-​panicked yell of «Heidi, NO! Ah-​ah! Here!» and returned sheepishly to me before finishing the «here» command by sitting in front of me. She did not run into the street and was safe from the car. That safety and control – which works when the dog is distracted in moments of potential danger – is the point of paying for dog training, and I am glad I turned to Drew for that training. I would recommend him to anyone (and have done so in the past).

Since working with Drew, our two dogs are completely different.
Ziggy is a 7-​year-​old 100-​pound mutt, who still acts like a puppy. Because of his size, and how excited he could get, he was really hard to walk, and whenever he saw another dog, he would pull my arm off. My wife refused to walk him, and I rarely did. Over the years, we tried many things (classes, special collars, other dog trainers), but just gave up, figuring you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
Hank is a 2 year old Brittany who we rescued as a 1-​year old. He never learned basic obedience, and it became very frustrating to try to communicate what we wanted.
Enter Drew.
We enrolled both dogs in the In Home — Off Leash Training. Drew came pretty much every day to our house for about an hour or two while we were at work for «as long as it takes», which ended up being about 5 weeks. He was very flexible, and worked around our schedule. After the 5 week in home training, Drew showed us how to do everything, and for the next several weeks, our dogs learned how to trust us to train them.
Now both dogs walk perfectly behind me without pulling on walks. If they see another dog, they just keep walking, and don’t pull or jump or bark (this one still amazes… if you could have seen them before!). I even feel comfortable enough to take both dogs at the same time! At the park, they will come when called. They can sit and stay, and be patient. It’s kind of incredible to have such well behaved dogs!
Sure, the training is expensive, but it really works. In my opinion it’s worth every penny, because we have happier dogs, and way less stress.
