Malco Studio On the Square

Usually studio on the square has awesome cheese and sausage boxes which is pretty much my reason for going there. Recently they were sold out after they told me on the phone they had them. So that’s pretty lame. I hope they get more cheese and sausage boxes soon

I am a fan! We saw Mockingjay on opening weekend and got primo seats even though we arrived only 10 minutes before the show started and waited in line for popcorn. Love that you can drink wine and beer with the film. There are also great looking desserts, although we haven’t tried them yet.
Restrooms leave a little to be desired.
Overall experience was really good. We will be back!

I love its proximity to my house. I like that it’s small. I like that they have wine and beer. I like the décor. It’s always clean. Everyone is always friendly. I do think the concession lines could move a little quicker. But all in all o like the theater.

Studio on the Square is my favorite movie theatre in Memphis. When they first opened, they were the place to see the small independent films in addition to blockbusters. It seems that the Ridgeway theatre has overtaken the Studio for the small independent films, though Studio does still provide theatres for the IndieMemphis film festival. It was fun to see so many out of towners running around when I was there on Sunday.
Theatres are a nice size and seating is comfortable. Floors are usually sticky, though. Sound can sometimes be an issue. The snack bar options offer the usual suspects as well as some lovely choices from Ciao Bella. My companion enjoyed a Ghost River beer and some cheesecake.

SOTS is in a perfect spot for me… walking distance from my home. I hope it continues to thrive and do well. It used to be more seclusive and a place you could go to get away from the (let’s just say) «youthfulness» of the larger theaters but since the resurgence of Overton Square I’ve noticed an uptick in the more rowdy (talkative/​needlessly disruptive) crowd. They used to show more (or primarily) indie/​art films but now they show most of the big budget movies. I always try to go during the week Tues — Thurs in hopes of having the best movie going experience. Love the ambiance (murals, old school projector, lounge area). Being able to purchase wine/​beer, cheese/​grapes,
addition to the normal movie food fare is cool too. The parking lot is «a bit special» and can be tight but you just gotta deal with it if you drive. If I could change anything I wish they’d upgrade to the plusher seating that Ridgeway Four has. Otherwise, this theater is perfect.

This theater is one of two in the Memphis area that shows movies besides the blockbusters and kiddie movies. It’s nice to have some choice and see movies that may not have widespread teen or family appeal. I agree with a previous reviewer who pointed out parking difficulties and indifferent employees. But those are minor inconveniences that I can live with for the chance to see movies that might not screen in Memphis otherwise. Thanks to Malco management for showing movies that appeal to adult viewers at Studio on the Square and Ridgeway. Maybe consider showing some of these at Forest Hill? It would be great to shorten the commute!

This movie house, along with the Ridgeway Four Grill are my favorite places to catch a film. 1– location. Overton Square is buzzing with activity. Eateries everywhere. And inside SOTS, you can get more than popcorn and candy. Beer, wine and grown up fare (I’m a sucker for their cheesecake). 2-​comfort. The four screens are smaller than the suburban daycare centers Malco runs, but they’re clean and comfy. Better than average seats. 3– clientele. It’s a more adult crowd, not the rambunctious teenyboppers flooding the suburb multiplexes.
You don’t have 3D or Dolby Atmos, but this place don’t need them. The only drawback is the parking lot. Come early or park in the garage across the street.

I loved the small theater feel not empty but not too full. Just right! And on a Saturday night!

So apparently buying a ticket in advance makes no guarantee that you’ll see the movie. When we got there with our already purchased tickets to see American Sniper, the theater was full.

I like this place and have for years. I remember when they only showed indie or limited released films. I like getting wine or coffe here rather than popcorn or nachos. Nice community theatre feel and friendly staff.

What a convenient location! Overton square is hoppin’ these days and I just love that you can sneak away into a movie after shopping, drinking, dining, and hanging out in Midtown. We used to drive all the way out to Paradiso (which is another great Malco Theatre) but I am just thrilled to have one closer to my down town apartment.
I love the intimate theatres, consessions that serve specialy snacks and beer/​wine, and the friendly staff. This was also an awesome place to view the film fest films!

Malco theaters offers a number of choices for Memphians, from the teen filled and blockbuster showing Paradisio to the foreign and indie film showing Ridgeway 4. And then right in the middle is the Studio on the Square. Located in the middle of newly hip Overton Square, this locally owned movie theater gives you the chance to see popular movies in a theater free from kids doing what kids do.
It also gives you a chance to watch a movie with a locally brewed beer.
The parking (as noted by Joelle) is tough. The new garage makes it better. And yes, I would also like to see more indie options here. But otherwise this is one of our best theater options.

I gotta add — with the influx of restaurants in Overton Square, parking here has become a real problem. A typical scenario: the boyfriend and I pull up 20 minutes before the show, realize there’s nowhere to park, think «Oh my god! The theater’s packed! We’ll never get a seat!», eventually find someplace to stash the car, go inside and… marvel at the six other patrons in the theater.
Malco would be doing themselves a favor to, at the very least, post a few signs indicating that parking is for theater patrons only. Isn’t there a fancy new parking garage a couple blocks away for all those restaurant patrons?

One of my favorite movie theaters in Memphis! I love this place — and not just because they serve cheese and wine.
Paradiso is the closest to my house, but lets face it, once you start getting older you’re looking to escape where the teens hang. And that seems to be the majority of what happens at the Paradiso. I know they’ve stopped hanging in the parking lot, but Studio on the Square is still a lot more «mature»…where people on dates and older, married couples go. It is quiet, i.e. no shouting or squealing from tweens in groups.
Plus I generally like the movies they play… although they seem to be more main stream than they were in the past. I miss the days when they showed mostly foreign and independent films… I head over to Ridgeway Four for that these days. And while there used to be ample parking, it is nearly impossible to find with the Renaissance Overton Square is going through. I circle and circle and circle and circle…*sigh*
Don’t get me wrong, I still really like this place… I just miss their glory days of quirky films and easy parking.

If I had a choice, this is where I’d prefer to go see movies in Memphis. It’s cozy, serves alcohol, and plays some not mainstream movies. It’s close enough to so many restaurants that you can have a «dinner and a movie» outing without having to park more than once! I’ve had dinner at Bosco’s followed by a movie at this Malco more than once.
And they definitely serve some more enticing snacks than just hot dogs and popcorn– hummus and pita bread at the movies? Yes please. And I enjoy the sitting area, where you can wait for your friends if they’re the straggling type.
Also, I have to tell you a kinda embarrassing story. Once I came here with friends and we bought beers to sit and wait for our straggling friend. I hadn’t even taken a sip of my beer yet, but I went to set it on the table and somehow I missed. Yeah, I missed the table. My full glass of beer shattered in a big mess all over their floor. I was mortified.
But without missing a beat, the concession worker poured me another and grabbed a mop. I felt really dumb and apologized profusely, but the guy just laughed it off and said not to worry about it. I’m the klutz who spilled (broke!) my beer, and they gave me another for free. That’s pretty awesome, and the kind of thing you don’t forget about when it comes to a business.
Sidenote: I see a lot of backlash about the No Weapons sign here. It’s a business owner’s choice to ban guns in their establishment. Give it a rest.

Remember when I said that this theater has ample parking? Yea, I lied.
At one point, I remember I could come here at any time of day and have no problem find a parking space. However, as the area continues to grow and expand, parking is becoming a nightmare. You can circle the lot for hours in what seems to be to be a high-​stakes game of Duck, Duck, Goose and will probably miss your showtime. Usually, I park a few blocks down and walk the rest of the way.
There is construction underway on a parking deck which will be virtually across the street, so maybe that will alleviate the problem.

I love this place! The service is great, and the atmosphere is a bit more grownup here, which seems to prevent kids and teens from coming. I don’t mind them, but it makes for less talking during the movies. ;)
As others have said, the concessions offer your traditional popcorn, but also offer different stuff too, which is a bonus. Awesome. It’s always nice to have a choice of something other than popcorn and nachos.
One bonus too that I think I’ve only seen at this particular Malco is their fireplace. Obviously right now in the middle of summer it’s too hot to enjoy. But come January, it’s nice to relax by the fire on one of the couches after a movie for a little before heading out.

Studio On the Square is my go-​to theater. I like that it’s not a huge multiplex and the staff is always very friendly. My favorite part of it is that you can get wine and beer in addition to some non-​traditional foods for movie theaters, such as hummus and pita. There’s a nice little seating area next to the concession stand where you could enjoy a quick drink before seeing the show.
The location was always convenient for me, because I live right around the corner, but it’s even better now with all of the development happening in Overton Square. Can’t wait to see how this area continues to grow!

Love the place. Have a glass of wine or a beer, lean back and enjoy some good films. Comfortable, with friendly staff, some nice lounge areas and an overall nice vibe.
I’d love to see some midnight movies here — is there any chance of that happening?

I love this theater! It’s small, sure, but it packs in a fun bang for your buck! The lobby area is decorated with old movie posters and local event listings… I love a place that promotes local activities and businesses!
You have all of your typical theater concessions, PLUS you get the added benefit of alcohol… right?! Doesn’t get much better. The staff often look bored, but I can’t quite fault them for that when they only have 5 movies going at any given time.
One of my favorite things about this theater is that they support the Indie Memphis Film Festival, and show IMFF movies in 2 of their 5 theaters during that weekend every November… again, definite cool points for supporting local awesomeness.
Definitely check this place out… even when it’s busy, it doesn’t feel like it is. You’ll have a blast!
