Memphis College of Art

I cannot say much about the academics here as I am not a student of the school, but I came with a group of friends from MTSU to attend Sally Mann’s lecture and book-​signing. The grounds are beautiful! There’s a park with a lake, fountain, playground, and dog park! The building the event was held in was an incredible art-​deco building, as well.

Amazing school, great staff and students. Innovative and cutting-​edge art. Located in a fabulous area of town, Overton Park. Has many attibutes and successful scholars.

After Graduation you remember things in hindsight. During my Junior and Senior year there were some things that went on in this school that left a rather bitter taste in my mouth. I stand by what I said about it being a good school with intelligent people who care. At least I do for the fine arts majors. If you’re into sculpture, painting, drawing, etc. Go for it. This is a good school.
It was also a good school for Art History, however, for some reason you can only minor in it.
However, if you’re in the design arts like Illustration, Cinema, Graphic Design, and Animation… you may not want to go here. Designers in the school get subpar treatment much of the time. And while its better now than it was, the education you will receive isn’t up to standard with other Design Colleges. When I graduated, the people of Graphic Design were considered 10 years behind graduating classes in other schools (Focusing mostly on graphic design by hand instead of the computer age). People in animation have just recently gotten any experience in 3D, and even then only in Maya. Visual Effects is scorned in the school even though knowing the basics of it is almost a requirement for any industry-​based job. They do have a good 2D animation program, but that’s their main focus, and 2D is dwindling in available jobs in the US. Lastly, cinema. While the program itself sets you up to make better stories (if you can survive it), until recently, the equipment was severely lacking. I’m talking about old style normal SD Panasonic video cameras that still run on tapes (not digitally). I am pleased to say that they recently got an update though. You’re encouraged to use tripods… but not rigs (because the school doesn’t really have them), and they own one very small portable green screen that is buried somewhere in the department and I only found out about halfway into my Junior year.
While the atmosphere of this school was amazing because of the small community, if you’re a designer, do yourself a favor and go to a better school. My personal suggestion would be Ringling College of Art and Design.

This school, founded in 1936, offers various programs in the field of art. They offer both graduate and undergraduate programs in fine arts or art education. The admissions office is very helpful in getting you the information that you need based on your particular interests. The campus itself is quite small, but the studios are nice, in good condition, and the exhibit area is very open and the perfect place to showcase student work.
