History

Established in 2003.

Memphis Judo & Jiu-​Jitsu was founded by David Ferguson, Joel Gingery & Mike Ostrowski in October of 2003 in the University of Memphis area. Beginning with only adult evening classes in Judo & Jiu-​Jitsu (hence our name), we began to expand our programs adding Muay Thai Kickboxing, Submission Wrestling, Children’s Judo & Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

After 3 successful years of growth, Memphis Judo & Jiu-​Jitsu was busting at the seams and a re-​location was needed. We needed to be able to have more classes going on at the same time, space for more training equipment and a location that was heated and air-​conditioned.

We opened our Bartlett facility on April 2, 2007 decked it out with: 4 full sized Muay Thai kickboxing bags, boxing equipment, Muay Thai pads, and a huge 2,100 sq. ft. Olympic tatami matted grappling area as well as 1600 sq. ft. of kickboxing flooring. Soon we added new programs and training equipment. David F.

Business Owner

David Ferguson, a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-​Jitsu, has been practicing the art since 1996. As an instructor David has had the unique opportunity to teach seminars all over the United States and Europe. In the summer of 2002 David was recruited by the legendary Royce Gracie to embark upon a 6 month stay in Copenhagen, Denmark where David taught BJJ and Submission Wrestling at Mikenta Muay Thai gym. In addition to his BJJ training, David has trained extensively in Muay Thai Kickboxing and Wrestling and has been featured in numerous local, national and international martial arts and sports publications.

David opened Memphis Judo & Jiu-​Jitsu inside Memphis Martial Arts Center on October 20th, 2003 and moved the school to Bartlett in February 2007. The school was moved again to accommodate growth in 2011 to it’s current 24,000 sq. ft. location near Wolfchase Gallaria.

David is currently the Ground Defensive Tactics instructor with the Memphis Police Department training all new MPD recru
