Memphis Railroad and Trolley Museum

This is a great visit for train lovers! The have a great mix of models, items from trains, a simulator (12+ years), and amazing volunteers with extensive knowledge. Ask for a behind-​the-​scenes tour of the tunnels, which hosted the original FedEx-​like, cargo hub.

Great place for train lovers. It is not big, but contain one very big train models, and one medium Thomas the train model. Couple more train related pieces rounds up this place. You probably can view and play with all pieces in under one hour. Not a big place, but has pretty interesting history.

I’m grateful to live in a town that has such a diverse offering of museums for its size. This museum has potential, I suppose, but it isn’t as interesting as it might be. There are a couple of interactive exhibits (push a button and the lights flash), but these won’t be engaging for many young children. In addition, the exhibits are text-​heavy, meaning that you need to stand and read for a long time, and the area is small, so if you are there while other people are, you’re sure to feel a bit crowded. There is a small children’s area, which includes a model Thomas train that you’re not allowed to touch and a small toddler-​style train table, which you are allowed to touch.
At least the price of admission isn’t high, but it probably felt like an even better value back when it included a trolley ride (before the trolleys went out of service).
Overall, I would love to see this museum succeed, but it seems like it isn’t geared toward children, which is fine, but a shame since many little ones under the age of 7 are positively train-​crazy. I might go back with an adult train enthusiast.

Great Place, still adding new attractions but we had a great time with a great guide. This place works on donations and is all volunteer. We are from the Detroit area and this was very cool to see.

$ 3 entry, open 9−5pm Friday and Saturday, noon-​5pm Sunday.
It’s worth the entry fee at twice the price, there’s so much to see, lots of interactive exhibits (SOS, lights, childrens display).
When this place expands out back, it’ll be even better. Hubby and I spent ages here, the staff were both lovely and friendly, they were knowledgeable about trains and the locale, they gave us suggestions for food and places to visit in town.
Time well spent!

PD and I visited this museum with our son and his wife and the 2 year old GS. We had seen an article about it in the Comical Appeal and were curious. It is a small museum, so far, but it is very interesting. They had stuff to keep the adults interested and to keep the GS very interested. The staff is excellent, they are all volunteers. They are very knowledgeable, both about railroads, and the railroad and trolley history in Memphis.
The current status of the museum is Phase I of three phases. I can’t remember the gentleman’s name but he told us about how the museum was planned and executed and about the plans for the future. We even got a tour of the Phase II and III parts. We were in tunnels under the train station that are 99 years old. This is where Phase III will go. It is real cool. Hopefully, they will get the kind of money and support they need to get it done.
