NO. Do not eat here. Turn around and walk to Bluefin on Main St, or even drive a little farther to the Sekisui on 25 S Belvedere Blvd. It’s a completely different experience, even though it’s the same owners. Here’s the thing– as it’s been stated, this sushi place shares the same kitchen as a sports bar, and they’re in the lobby of a hotel. Perhaps because they share a kitchen, they think it’s ok to send out sushi on red plastic baskets lined with red gingham wax paper, like you see wings served on. This is in fact, how they serve their wings too. The sushi is pitiful, décor aside, because every roll I ordered was wrapped in warm rice. Ew. Just ew.

While I love just about all of the Sekisui locations(even in St. Louis!), this one just doesn’t cut it. I’ve been several times and probably won’t be going back after my last visit. The miso soup was way too sea-weed-y(is that a word?), and my rolls didn’t taste very fresh. The wait staff was mostly indifferent and the tables were all somewhat dirty.

Sekisui is my stand-by sushi place, and while I don’t often dine at the downtown location, I will go during my lunch hour occasionally. Yes, it is located in the bottom floor of a hotel, and there might be a slightly musty smell in the air, but the food is really not terrible. I’ve had my fave crunchy shrimp, Redbirds roll, miso soup and ginger salad here many a time, and I have not been disappointed. Hopefully the place will receive a much-needed remodel soon, and maybe people will start popping in more often.

Not my favorite sushi place but it works in a pinch. Sekisui introduced me to the most Americanized roll, I believe it was the ‘Philly Cheesesteak Roll’. Thin steak, cream cheese, rice, etc. It was ridiculous and delicious. I got the basic California roll here, no roe. It was good, but nothing special. I have to agree with previous posters, that the ambiance in both Sekisuis that I have been in is very chain-like. Again, I would eat there and it’s pretty good, but I prefer mom and pop sushi places.

can i give them zero stars? because that’s exactly what they deserved… even the fried rice and teriyaki chicken was nasty and dry. jeez, even my 5 year old cousin could whip up a better meal than that. the service was drier than the chicken… i will NEVER be back. boo to you!

I know I am from Cali so my standards for sushi can be high, but this place is ridiculous! After several days of none stop BBQ, I need something a little lighter. I saw this place in several local magazines. How can you screw up a California roll? More ways than one apparently… yes it is in a lobby, but that wasn’t an issue. The place had a slight«off» smell but so does most of downtown Memphis. I ordered a cucumber salad and 2 hand rolls(no raw fish! I am brave, not stupid). The cucumbers were not seeded or even peeled; and sat in a pool of soy sauce.(sigh.what was I thinking) not to be deterred, I got my rolls and my husband got his tempura. His shrimp weren’t deveined and the veggies were still raw. My rolls were tiny! They used so little rice; you could see the nori(seaweed) through the rice. They were easily no more than ¾ of an inch in diameter. It was so sad. I know Memphis isn’t known for its sushi but at least try and make it look like the picture on the table. I clearly do not recommend under any circumstances.

I walked in and did a double-take. Was I really in a sushi restaurant, or trapped in a lobby of a Holiday Inn? Feeling brave, I went ahead and gave it a shot. I give this place 2 stars because the sushi I ordered was actually better than I expected, given the atrocious ambiance. I think this place simply suffers from a terrible location! Sekisui IS in the lobby of a hotel, adjacent to a sports bar with blaring TV and a beer guzzling tourist crowd. It just didn’t go with my seaweed salad. There was one other person at the sushi bar with me, and he was also an obvious business traveler. As I finished my very quick meal, I left disappointed– this place is nothing like the one in Midtown.
