Alegria Ocean Front Inn & Cottages

Beautiful views, yummy breakfast, and convenient location. We soaked in the hot tub (robe provided) overlooking trees and ocean, it was lovely. The staff was nice, and the owner was the waiter serving breakfast (nice personal touch). One day we had waffles, chicken sausage, and fruit, the other day was frittata, scones, and fruit, and of course coffee or hot chocolate or tea, and organic juice. Everything was yummy, although, I prefer pork sausage vs chicken sausage. You have the option of eating with others which is very pleasant with a gorgeous view, or stay in and eat in your room for no extra charge. We stayed in the driftwood cottage which was private, quiet, and unique. It was cute with our own coffeemaker, tea stash, microwave, fridge, and stove. You also have a TV and DVD player in the room. The Inn has a select few DVD’s you can borrow free, but I would bring my own since the selection is small. The downside to the room was it is a bit uncomfortable to get to the bed (walk up some stairs overhead) and you can’t watch tv from there. The tub was very, very, deep but water wouldn’t fill so you can’t soak, so basically you can only shower, and carpet needs to be replaced (stains and signs of wear and tear). Overall we enjoyed our stay, and loved you could walk to the beach from the inn, but I think we’ll go with another room next time.

This is the most wonderful place to stay in Mendocino. It is so peaceful & quiet. Eric & Elaine are the owners, they are wonderful. So nice & helpful. Their breakfast is so delicious. If you get to stay there for a couple of days, you get excited about what they are going to serve the next day for breakfast. Elaine & Lisa are usually the ones to make these delicious breakfast. There is a private walk path to the beach. This time we got to do a Bön Fire on the beach. It was so relaxing. This trip was about bring our friends, they needed a relaxing get away. We got to walk the Mendocino Headlands. It was so beautiful this time of year. Eric & Elaine will make your trip the best you ever had. Anything you would like to do, you let them know, they will try their best to make it happen. The staff is so wonderful. Jim & Jeff are a few of the inn keepers. Thank you Jim for all that you did for us while we were staying there. You are always so nice & helpful. You always help us to find new places to eat or do things. Thank you Lisa for the wonderful breakfast & always being so friendly. We were glad we got to come back within 3 months instead of a year. Hope to come back soon. We also want to stay at your Dolphin House. I am going to include pictures of the room we stayed in, the Pacific Suite.

I’m writing this on behalf of my parents. When my parents came back they talked so highly of Alegria! They went there for their 28^th anniversary and already want to go back there! They said the lemon bars were amazingl. The breakfast was spectacular and the views were breathtaking! Thank you Elaine you are very sweet!

We had a delightful visit. Breakfast, cookies and lemon bars were excellent. Also enjoyed the complimentary wine! The room and bed was comfortable and cute. Views from the deak were wonderful. Very convenient to the beach, headlands, Big River trail, and town. Innkeepers were helpful and informative. We will be back.

Stay here twice a year because it’s peaceful and quiet and comfortable. Private beach entrance. Beautiful garden in back. Welcome basket which I loved. Great hosts.

I wanted to get away for my anniversary to some place really quiet, and so I picked Mendocino. I called many places to check on their kid policy (my son is 5 years and I cannot leave him behind).
All the places I called will not accept kids and at this point I was going to give up and then called Alegria. The person I spoke to Eric, was beyond helpful not only helped us making an exception to their 2 day minimum policy, but also suggested we stay at the Raku House which had a larger living space and extra beds for the kid.
The location was just perfect!!! The service is 5 star, no to mention the blue berry scones served for breakfast. I never liked eating scones and the scones here were warm tasted divine.
Definitely recommend this place if you are trying to get away for the weekend!
PS: I took away 1 star cos the bed was not very comfy.

my husband surprised me with a stay in the driftwood cottage for our anniversary. it was fantastic! close to everything you want in mendocino, this is a beautiful property that is well kept both indoors and out. eric and elaine were wonderful hosts –knowledgable and truly hospitable– they are both relaxed and genuinely friendly. i can’t say enough nice things about them. breakfast was delicious and elaine’s cookies are probably at fault if we gained a couple extra pounds during our stay. i’m only sad that we couldn’t stay longer. we will definitely be back! thank you!

Stayed one night mid week so we were able to get the tree top room for the discounted price of $ 159. Still a little pricey for us but we splurged on it instead of the Raku house rooms. Breakfast (full and hot) was included in this room.
Paulo was so nice and was patient while we looked a 4 rooms. Hot tub was great. No jets which is how we like them. No noise. Walk to the beach is pretty.
We loved our room. Nice skylights, a fire was already set, little private deck for an outside snack that night. Loved that it had a hot water pot since I am not a coffee drinker.
The whole place is quiet after dark. gardens are lush and short walk into town. We will be back next trip up north.

We treasure every minute spent here during our annual mini-​honeymoon visits to celebrate our anniversary. Eric and Elaine go out of their way to ensure a perfect experience – and we look forward all year long to our next visit! Truly, although we do tell all our friends about the wonders of Alegria, our only hesitation in recommending «our» special place so publicly is that if EVERYONE finds out, we might have a very hard time getting reservations next time! Thanks so much, Alegria, for our most magical romantic getaway yet! We love you!!!

This place is absolutely magical. I am almost hesitant to write a review because we would love to keep it a secret ;)
We stayed in the Village Farm retreat and it was just what we needed– the absolute opposite of the quick paced and loud city life we currently lead. Aside from the house being a piece of history, it was decorated beautifully. It is almost like we had ur own place and weren’t even staying in an inn. The coast was a quick walk away and the trails along the coast where the Little River Beach is was breathtaking. The staff was extremely kind and accommodating and helped create the peaceful environment that surround the inn.
This is now our special spot and we can’t wait to return. Thank you!

After reading such wonderful Unilocal reviews we made our decision to stay at this delightful Inn and Cottages in Mendocino! The reviews were absolutely right on and we were even more pleased than we anticipated! The first 3 nights we stayed in the Garden Cottage which was really adorable and quaint with every amenity you needed. It looks out on lovely gardens and views of the ocean. We had one more night in Mendocino and originally thinking we would try someplace else decided we were having such a great time we would ask about another night here. Our cottage was already spoken for so we took the most lovely of rooms, the Pacific Room and wow it is amazing with sweeping views of the ocean and Big River from big windows and the balcony. It looks to be the fanciest but quaint space but we also loved our Garden Cottage too! Eric and Elaine are such delightful hosts and so helpful with suggestions for dining and places to go and make wonderful organic breakfasts every morning! Though it is right on the edge of town it feels very secluded. We will definitely be back ti this very special place!!!

Just came home from an overnight stay at Cove Cottage & I can’t wait to go back! Everything about our stay was amazing. The grounds inspire peace and relaxation. The owners pay so much attention to detail and our cottage had everything we needed. Nothing fancy, just comfortable and relaxing: super plush bed, cozy fireplace, amazing view of the beach and a delicious home cooked breakfast to start the next morning. I will definitely be back for a longer stay next time!

My boy friend and I took a one day trip to Bodega bay this last Sunday and we stayed at Alegria inn. We stayed at the Garden Cottage. THE BEST experience ever! The owner and his wife are EXTREMELY SWEET and welcoming, and the gentleman at the front disk is so informative and welcoming. The place is gorgeous and each cottage is so unique and beautiful. We used the spa at night and did lots of star gazing, the stars are remarkably close (saw 4 shooting stars). In the morning we were served breakfast by the owner (GREAT COOK) and it was just such an amazing experience over-​all!

Intimate setting, direct beach access, delightful breakfast… Owners offered personalized service. Ocean view from the hot tub was a favorite highlight. Full kitchens in some of the rooms… We cooked a spectacular dinner and the grounds at Alegria made it a top notch experience! Baked goods and fruits were available at all hours — so delicious!!!

When we arrived at Alegria we were greeted by Jeffrey and the scent of freshly-​baked cookies.
The treehouse is lovely room with a view, a real fireplace, lots of natural light and anything you could need (e.g. wine bottle opener, champagne flutes, coffee, tea, etc.).
I was really impressed by the complimentary organic breakfast of fresh fruit, salsa eggs and a cinnamon scone. It was really good.
We enjoyed every minute of our stay.

Here is the thing about fun lodging in spectacular one of a kind spots like Mendocino — one can get jaded with all the natural beauty. This place (the tree house in particular) gives you the sound of waves, cool ocean mists, hardwood fires and unobstructed views of stars, redwoods and lush gardens and a hot tub! The narratives overemphasize the ocean views, this is more lush and subtle coast than Santa Monica /​Malibu but the combination of environment, credible books and fresh food and affordable wines are special. If you have any experience with Northeast places — coastal Maine, Nantucket, Cape Ann, Lenox you will get this town immediately — I mean who finds a 1961 history of SUNY Oswego especially here?! We’ll be back and though the New York Times 36 hour piece is a little dated, the places mentioned are still here post recession, we loved it and will be back. The understated neon martini glass of Dick’s bar is classic California, a beacon as much as the spire of the Presbyterian Church (maybe of equal importance). You’ll gladly add a 1% tax to maintain the Headlands (I’m instituting this tax at my SF apartment starting Monday) — this place is the real deal! Blueberry scones (4.8÷5) Apple cider (tough to get right in CA ⁴⁄₅) and great owners who really found their niche make this a wonderful waypoint — even if you’re not questioning how 25 years just happened.

First time in Mendocino and it did not disappoint! The Alegria Inn was amazing place. We stayed in the Pacific room. Tons of room, nice kitchen area and large bathroom where the girls could get ready. It was my birthday the day we stayed and they left me a really nice box of Belgium Chocolate! Way over the top hospitality and service from the lady who checked us in to the lady who served us breakfast. The food was outstanding and breakfast was communal. Will come again when I meet the man of my dreams!

My husband and I stayed here with another couple for 2 nights. We had a wonderful stay. Our room was the Seacliff. It was beautifully appointed, very comfortable and the view was spectacular. The room was squeaky clean and the bed was comfortable. Both breakfasts were delicious.
When we checked in, our hostess made sure we had everything we needed. We ended up having one special request, which was granted without a blink.
What a wonderful place! We love the north coast, and we added this place to the very short list of favorite places.

About 4 – 5 years ago we stayed here in an A frame cottage next to the main lobby. It was so incredibly quaint, we enjoyed the daily breakfast, and fresh-​baked cookies in the lobby. The A frame had a little kitchen that suit our needs, an interesting shower with mosaic-​tiles, and a sleeping area you had to climb to. Rustic-​appearing but certainly comfortable.
I was hoping to book that cottage this time but the only available property was their Village Farmhouse which is 2 blocks away from the main Inn. It looked fine in the photos. We were told that the Inn owners are next door but we’ve stayed at other B & B’s before and weren’t deterred by this news.
I couldn’t quite put my finger on it the first night but then today I realized the place lacks quaintness. It’s old, i.e. claw foot tub, but everything seems like it was purchased at a rummage sale. For ~ $ 200/​night I’m kind of turned off with the mismatched cutlery, glasses, linens, and décor. The significant difference between this place and Beggs-​Bishop Cottage (a similar 2 room cottage in Mendocino Village) is the cable TV here which isn’t why we chose this place. Beggs-​Bishop was booked. ;-(
Maybe a lot of people don’t cook when they come here but that’s one of the niceties about coming to Mendocino — enjoying the great outdoors and then having a few of your meals in a more relaxed environment. Eating out at restaurants 3x/​day is somewhat insufferable. So here it’s advertised as a «full kitchen» but the refrigerator is near the couch on the other side of the room from the sink and stove. There is a table but it’s crowded with a lamp, coffee maker, and other accoutrement. On the other side of the sofa is a little table with a microwave on it. It’s just plain weird and I feel like I’m in a Beverly Hillbillies episode.
Today the toilet backed up and we discovered that there’s no housekeeping service so we had to deal with a filled garbage bag.
