I wont lie and say I was pretty upset about my bf wanting to come here because I wasn’t sure if I like the food. I am a picky eater and I know that I am. It’s very cozy inside like being in your grandma’s house. The tables are nice but those chairs need to be fixed so uncomfortable, I am not a big person. I just thought they were going to break. Our waitress was extremely nice. I got the steak kbobs and they were delicilious. Cooked to perfection and marinated just the way I like them. My bf got the shrimp something and he looked it as well. The white chocolate at the end was the perfect treat. :)

The Common Man reminds me of a meal at a colonial inn. Our server Mike was the one who stole the show. Since we have never been to The Common Man, he told us there’s complimentary crackers and dips in the lobby. Between the two dips available, I liked the Herb Cheese Dip more. For drinks, we ordered an unsweetened iced tea, sweet tea, and a glass of Basin white wine. After our server brought our drinks, he brought us a basket of bread consisting of two types of breads — sweet bread with blueberries and warm dinner rolls and whipped butter. I loved the bread so much I had to ask for seconds. For dinner, we ordered Apple Walnut Chicken, New England Pot Roast, and Crab Crusted Haddock. I liked how each entrée came with sautéed string beans and a choice of another side — whether it be baked potato with butter and sour cream, mashed potato with gravy, or wild rice pilaf. The Apple Walnut Chicken consisted of a walnut panko crusted chicken stuffed with an apple stuffing served over maple cream sauce. I liked how the chicken was tender on the inside but I felt that the chicken was a bit dry on the outside. The New England Pot Roast consisted of slow braised pot roast with mashed potatoes, braised vegetables and natural jus pan sauce. I liked how tender and juicy the beef was. I liked how it wasn’t heavily seasoned with salt or pepper. The Crab Crusted Haddock consisted of crab crusted haddock baked in a lemon butter sauce and served with roasted red pepper basil cream. I didn’t like how the fish had a fishy taste. We were too full for dessert but would return to try some. Our server brought us some white chocolate and our bill which was given in an old book.

Traveling through NH, I asked for a recommendation at the hotel for a place to eat dinner. The Common Man was suggested. What a gem! Located in a building with sections from the late 1700’s, I loved the ambience. The wait staff was a bit slow getting to our table but made up for it with friendliness & attentiveness. Two appetizers were ordered by our party. The corn lobster chowder(chowdah?) was all a New England chowder should be. Thick but creamy with chunks of lobster, sweet corn, and small bits of potato –not chunks as the main ingredient. I had the Autumn Apple Flatbread with carmelized apples and onions, basil, and fontina cheese on a puffed flatbread. Outrageous! ! I could have made that the meal alone. My entrée was the Shrimp Scampi mac n cheese. Creamy cheese sauce over the cavatelli and small shrimp that had been sautéed with garlic and added a slight tartness to the cavatelli. The cavatelli was NOT overcooked but al dente, the way I like my pasta. Home made, light, rolls with an herb and cheese topping and help yourself to cheese and crackers started the meal. We were too full for what looked like terrific desserts, but walked out of this charming restaurant feeling happy, well fed and having enjoyed, thus far, the best meal of our New England trip.

Don’t come here unless you’re desperate! Food is nasty. Typical pub food. Even the comfort Pot pie was bad.

This is a great restaurant the upstairs bar is fantastic place to get together with friends. I always ask for Brittney to be our server. She’s been there for years and does as great job keeping our thirst quenched. The grilled chicken sandwich, pork mac and cheese, salmon is great. Although my favorite in the winter is the french onion soup.

Went here on Friday with not great expectations… boy was I wrong! Our waitress was a delight with a sense of humor, my kids and husband raved about the rolls and blueberry bread, so we bought some on the way out and enjoyed it the next day. We started off with mussels and the portion was huge, The food was amazing, my steak was cooked to perfection, the brussel sprouts(which I’ve never had before) were delicious and the sauce on my steak was ridiculously good. My husband had salmon he was impressed, cooked just right. We will definitely be back again !

Prices are kind of steep and portions are on the small side. But the food was really good and the cheese and crackers and bread they give you before the meal definitely help make up for the smaller portion meal

Although I like the common man the quality can be inconsistent. At my most recent visit the bottle of red wine we ordered was WAY too warm and our pizzas were overcooked. In all fairness I’ve also had excellent meals here but my most recent meal left me underwhelmed. I do find the staff to always be warm and friendly and the menu to be filled with comfort food options.

Talk about the best restaurant ever!!! The service was great, our waitress was so nice and fast. I just can’t explain in words how amazing and delicious it was. If you go to New Hampshire or already live there you should go!

Relatively basic food for premium prices. I ordered a chicken sandwich. Sounded really good. When it came to the table it looked good. Portion sizes were above average. I take a large bite out of the sandwich only to realize that the chicken is completely raw on the inside. Not the«it might be undercooked» raw, but the«my waiter could see how raw it was from 6 feet away» raw. My meal was comped. I do feel as though the manager should have done more than comp just my meal. This is not like comparing a piece of raw chicken to a piece of undercooked steak. I will most likely not go back there due to prices and«commonness» of the food.

Waited for a table then was passed over for another group because the hostess said she did not need to take names. We spoke up, which annoyed the other couple, however we then would have had to wait further. Lunch menu was limited, and since the wait was long(many empty tables?) and the waiter took forever to come take our order, we asked for bread and was told, «Well, we usually don’t serve that with Lunch, but I guess I can bring you some» I ordered a $ 10 hamberger medium w/potato salad, what I got was an overcooked burnt burger with no taste and potato salad that so bad I could not eat it even though I was starving. Hubby got the $ 12 Rueben thinking how could you mess that up, well they did, he said it was horrible. The did not bring his side and waiter never came back, except to bring us the bill, haha! Save your cash, there are better options out there.

Upon arrival I was a bit reluctant to enter, thinking I was under dressed for the atmosphere. When I entered the hostess was extremely pleasant and because it was just myself dining, I opted to eat at the bar. Upstairs there is a full bar and numerous lounge areas. I sat alone at one of the tall 2 person table tops. The décor was very rustic, but sheek. I ordered the sangria special, blue cheese wedge salad with crab cakes. The meal was spectacular. My crab cake had lump crab and my salad was more than I was able to finish. I will definitely return before leaving New Hampshire.

Good, dependable comfort food in very nice historic settings. Love the Mack and cheese and meat loaf. Food is packed with calories but you know that when you decide to go there. I live near the Meramac location which is a charming historic building. I have also been to the concord location and the original location which is up north. These old restored New England houses or Barnes. very neat.

The smoke house burger is really great. Good flavor and the cook was spot on. The sweet potato fries were crispy and delicious. The jalapeño poppers are done in a unique way. Instead of frying the cheese in the skin of a pepper they mash everything up and put it in a fried ravioli. The portions are huge! The atmosphere seems like it would be fantastic in the winter with a nice fire going in the bar area.

I was going here once a week for lunch with work. I will never go back again. 4 of us sat at a table for lunch, 30 mins later we were finally getting a drink. When I brought up the matter to the waitress, the manager chimed in behind her with a wise remark. The waitress did a great job on getting our food out faster for us but the manager did absolutely nothing. At the end of the lunch she gave us all a coupon for«free appetizers with a purchase of a meal». I will not be spending a penny more of my money with this restaurant.

Brunch on the Sunday before St. Patrick’s day … you’d think they’d have some traditional Irish food? You’d be wrong. Perhaps a couple of «specials»? You’d still be wrong. What they had was a «Pub» type menu, with not a single, normal size dinner available. Oh well, Lobster Corn Chowder sounds good for an appetizer? Hmmm … the only«lobster» involved, was a dime sized piece of claw, floating in a cream based broth, with nary a kernel of corn. Isn’t «chowder» supposed to be thick and creamy? Not this chowder! Pot Roast dinner was the only thing on the menu I’d even consider … I should have re-considered and left for another restaurant. (2) pieces of Pot Roast, no larger than a ½ dollar and about as thick as a McDonald’s 99¢ hamburger. A spoonful of mashed potatoes and supposed«grilled vegetables». Answer me this one Lucy … who ever heard of grilling Asparagus with garlic? Any chef who believes garlic is an appropriate flavoring for Asparagus, desperately needs re-training. A few peas & carrots floating around in Au Jus was the remainder of the«grilled vegetables». No bread or rolls served. So the final touch, is they present the check, between the pages of an old, musty book. Cool, huh? Blah! Of course when I opened the«book» to see the check, the book flopped onto the creamer and splatters cream all over the table. If you asked me 4 years ago, what was my favorite restaurant in NH, i would have said the«Common Man» chain. Ask me today and my opinion is obviously different.

I had dinner at the Common Man last week with my husband. I really like the ambiance of this place. The restaurant is located in an old colonial house. Our server, Alyssa, was really great. There are complimentary crackers and dip by the main door. We shared Momma’s meatballs as an appetizer. They were incredible! Seriously, they were best meatballs I have ever had. For dinner I had the Portsmouth pie and my husband had the surf and turf. The seafood portion of my dish was very good, but the sides(rice & green beans) were just ok. My husband really enjoyed his dinner. My main complaint about the restaurant is that it was freezing! I’m guessing that it because the restaurant is located in an old house, but there was a cold breeze throughout the meal.

Pros: ~awesome atmosphere, very homey ~cheese & cracker bar ~bread Cons: ~service — we were sitting at the bar and it still took 10 minutes to get anything we needed ~food — we both had seafood dishes and they were overcooked and over buttered.
