Spontaneity is the word: we have pop up restaurants, pop up shops, pop up art galleries, pop up magazines, why not a library? Bookleggers has its home in Lester’s, but you won’t see it going there on an ordinary day. It only pops up once in a month, and not necessarily in Lester’s, it could be at the Miami Book Fair, a bar in Miami Beach or midtown. Usually there is a few days’ notice via twitter( ) or email subscription. For newcomers, first book is free. Extra books can be had for $ 2 each or traded with books: books you’re done reading or decide you’ll never read. Bookleggers do ask for nice copies of books: don’t bring them your 20 year old textbooks, your penny romances, or your Da Vinci Code. In turn, their selection is high quality. Mostly literary fictions, some classics, art books, plenty of non fictions, even some graphic novels. Whatever you desires, they are yours to keep. You can return them to trade for more books, pass them on to your friends, or keep them forever. There is no past due fees, no penalty. Strictly speaking, Bookleggers is a used bookstore rather than a library. However, toting the many boxes of books around is more a labor of love than a money making venture. It’s a nice way to introduce people to the business hosting the pop up as well. I also love how Nathaniel likes to comment on the books, as he stamps them for check out, «Oh, this one is a good one», «I read another book by this author!» just like how I imagine a kindly neighborly librarian may do(though I’ve never experienced).
