On a recent trip to Miami, my friends and I stopped into the gallery. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Although I am not a huge fan of all of the little figurines and such, I prefer the wall hung art, but I do appreciate it all. The store itself was clean, and tidy. Very inviting.

There is no doubt that Romero Britto is an extremly accomplished and sucessful artist. His early works hit the art world with a unique style that drew attention to him with colorful, pop-like art. Putting talent aside, this is how many artists become known; unique style catches people’s attention and defines the art they create. I once saw an interview with Keith Haring where he laughed at american art buyers because he felt he didn’t have to use his artistic skill because we were stupid enough to buy his crap; but it was a new style at the time that drew us in(we were sold on the uniqueness). No doubt that Britto art is still well received after more than 25 years, but walking into this«store»(notice I did not say gallery or studio) I didn’t feel like we were taking in art or appreciating these expressions of creativity. Simply put it was a store. Yes, there were a few pieces hung on the wall, but most of what we saw was disney licensed crap(cups, umbrellas, key chains, crap!) and other mass produced junk manufactured with Britto licensed art. I know he is still commissioned for various projects, but too much commercial mainstream art chasing mass appeal. BOTTOMLINE: I like Romero Britto artwork, but the store seemed more like a gift shop in the heart of Wynwood Art District.
