Shell Lumber

Never got to see whether their products are good or not. First call, they hung up on me … did not try to call me back. 2^nd call: Told me they would have to receive a fax list of what I needed, although I told them I only needed 1 sheet of ply with 1 simple cut. Still insisted on a faxed list! Then said they would not take credit card over phone, and would not be able to deliver when needed. All in all, a poor experience. Every lumber company I’ve ever worked with has the exact opposite procedure & attitude. So … we’re off the Home Depot.

Made two trips for a project I wanted to complete at home. First trip was ok. Purchased an 8′ beam that was 3″ thick and had it cross cut into 4 equal pieces. A long wait for service on the cross cut but completed and out the door reasonably happy with the experience. After completing the design of the project I needed to rip cut two 26″ pieces of the 3″ stock. I paid for the cuts and took it to the millworks area. The supervisor of the millworks area looked at the two pieces of stock and said I would have to pay for it. I told him I had and he said the cashier didn’t see the stock. I told him the cashier had it in front of him when he charged me for the cuts. He mumbled something like $ 20 and additional for each cut and walked away. I found him and asked him if he was going to make the cuts and he said no that I hadn’t paid for it. I went to the cashier … got my refund … and left. Didn’t like the attitude of the millworks supervisor. The cashier told me $ 20 plus a little over $ 3 per cut. Over $ 26 for two 26 inch cuts sounds excessive to me and I originally chose Shell because they had a millworks service. Disappointed.

Have you tried the food on the Shell Lumber & hardware food truck? My husband and I visited Shell lumber to get a few things needed for home repairs. After we shopped, by the way the friendliest and most helpful employees I’ve ever seen. We decided to try out the food truck food. The Cuban sandwich and the chili, cheese fries were OUT OF THIS WORLD… my husband had the Lumberjack burger… not only did it taste fantastic, but this burger was HUMONGOUS and cooked to perfection…

Great local hardware store. Customer service is always excellent. Recently they have started carrying a nice selection of native plants for our area. Some of the varieties I have seen include:

What stores used to be like before the big boxes took over — plenty of knowledgeable staff to help you out — lots of selection and the prices are very competitive. Hands down favorite hardware-​lumber store in Miami — no one comes even close.

Not just great hardware and lumber…
I was afraid that the Home Depot would be serious competition for Shell Lumber, which has long been one of my favorite Miami institutions, but fortunately Shell appears to be continuing to thrive. It has expertise in every department and a checkout staff that is super efficient while remaining pleasant, and it is consistently well stocked for nearly anything I need for home maintenance and repairs. The prices are basic and reasonable, I’ve never had a problem parking (although I also find it a convenient stop on the Metrorail going to and from work), the service is super. I’ve found their selection, quality and prices of air conditioner filters beats Home Depot. This is where the pros go to get their materials, and for good reason.

This place has been here since your grandfather’s day. It and the South Miami Ace on Red Road are the last of the Old Miami hardware stores left. But Shell is also for lumber of all kinds, and is for housewives and finish carpenters, for woodworkers, dads and contractors. There is more help than you can use. If you have any inconvenience or difficulty at all, ask for David, the manager. He is a doctor of hardwareology. They are price competitive and their inventory boggles the imagination. They even serve great burgers, dogs and brats. They have a mill shop where they can do custom work for you, saving you the need to have a garage full of power tools. They have exotic hardwood, every conceivable kind of plywood (including Baltic birch), veneers, If you are at all handy, this is your Mecca in Miami.

Your friendly neighborhood hardware store. A place where everyone greets you with genuine pleasure. Coming here is almost like going back in time.
This is the place to come for all your wood and wood cutting needs. They also sell individual Mason jars in various sizes, how random and awesome is that? Their garden department is small but the staff is very knowledgeable and bring in good quality plants, trees and palms.
All your basic home maintenance needs are covered here. Don’t expect the selection you would find at mass, chain hardware stores. But do expect exceptional customer service, where they will walk you to what you are looking for, rather then say «I think it’s in aisle 23» and they just keep on walking by.

Whatever I need for my business or home, I go to Shell to see if they have it first! If you need extra help they know their stuff, if you want to pick through things to create something on your own they are ok with that too.
Hands down, the best hardware and Lumber store in Miami.

It may be my rustic upbringing, but my design aesthetic runs towards wood and leather. Bother me not with your shiny steel tubes, crystal trinkets, ebony whatever. But a quarter-​sawn oak frame with coffee-​dark leather cushions is like an altar. You don’t need to «love materialist things» to be able to appreciate the stunning beauty of natural materials, lovingly crafted.
Sadly, not everything my hands create match the picture in my head at the beginning. Or, maybe, what I should say is that this is the beginning, so not everything my hands create match the picture in my head. But I’m getting better. And I’ll keep getting better. And when I need large, solid wood to turn into expensive dust (and nice finished products), there really is no competitor to Shell. Their selection of hardwoods is second to none. And a wide variety of wood already tongue and grooved means I get to spend less time mindlessly shoving things through my dado and more time crafting a nice finished product.
I’ll be back. Repeatedly.

Really poor customer service. We were looking to buy some new doors and they basically treated us like we were pieces of crap and stupid. SO SORRY… didn’t know you have to give the width measurement first (and they were sure to correct us).
Kind of your typical hardware store that probably deals mainly with contractors and makes consumers feel idiots for shopping there.
We went to their «special order» department with a third surly guy kept saying «no» and continued to make us feel unwelcome.
They were marginally more friendly across the street at Home Depot and showed us a much larger selection.
No wonder I never leave the beach and pay twice as much at the South Beach Ace hardware. They treat you with respect and like gold there.

Old style hardware store, kind of old Miami feel to it, after Saunder’s (which was my all-​time fave) closed years ago, this is where I usually go as an alternative to Home «hell“Depot.
Only con I have found is that sometimes in dealing with certain staff, they are a bit arrogant & discriminatory.

Everything.
They have everything… so much more then just lumber.
But they do specialize in lumber, the reason you drove over here instead of going to your local Home Depot.
But rest assured that you can get everything else you need to complete your project here too; you won’t need a second stop.
We special ordered in a door, that showed up in days, not weeks. The staff is so knowledgeable and very friendly and helpful.

Why five stars for a lumber store? Easy, I’m not a lumber guy. Wood to me comes in a flat packed box from Ikea. I put things together with that Ikea wrench that coms in every package. When I bought this backyard cabinet that was really easy to put together but didn’t come with shelves I knew I was going to have to venture into the real wood world.
I first went to Home Depot to find out they don’t make the kind of cut I needed for the shelf. I’d driven by Shell Lumber for years and kinda new this was the place to go. The guy who helped me was amazing. No judgement from him just quality service. He listened to what I needed, how it would be used, selected a wood for me, pulled it down, marked it off, set up my order and the next day I had three wood shelves with a special angle cut (from the Mill Shop). No muss, no fuss just service and the exact product I needed.
I love companies like this. To me, this type of service always gets five stars.

desire to pee, and a huge wood that we most likely have gotten from Shell Lumber The wood they have here is so enormous that some get a stiff neck and sore jaw just from looking at it or maybe doing more, it’s ok, you won’t get in trouble

Got wood, they certainly do!
Shell lumber sells quality, quality and quality. Whether it’s Zebra Wood or Abaco. There prices are steep; however, if your buying quantity I have found prices are negotiable!

Did I die and enter a fresh wood cut heaven? No, just Shell Lumber.
Now I’m used to the Home Depot off of 136 and 160, and the 2 Ace Hardwares, but Shell Lumber was a man’s toy store.
I went with a friend to pick up some cherry wood he had pre-​cut there for his soon-​to-​be kegerator. But before that, we got to walk around and take in the great and varied selections of wood, sheets and more.
Oh, they also have a hardware store. Its a bit claustrophobic, but that’s alleviated by the free popcorn.
I’ve never had harder wood than when I was at Shell Lumber.

Occasionally, I have some project needs in the area that require immediate attention. Shell lumber has definitely become my go to place. It is a one stop shop of sorts, I can come here and have copies of my keys made, pick up some crown molding and get some accessories or hardware for the doors, all in one trip.
It definitely beats the other large chain in the area. Granted it is not a behemoth of a building, and parking may sometimes be a bit tight — but it always feels good to support local, especially when they are competitive in price and service.

It’s the little hardware store that could!
And while it looks little on the outside, it’s pretty massive inside! If you’re looking for something that got «wood» in the name, then they’ve got it — except for woodpecker. But a woodpecker would still be jealous!
