University of Miami Hospital

The attending physicians here are amazing. The clinical and non clinal staff is absolutely horrible. If you are going to UMH for an outpatient procedure this place will do, however if the procedure requires inpatient processing please DO NOT GO HERE. They have the rudest, poorly trained and negligence written nursing staff in South Florida. Stay away from this place at all costs it’s really not worth the stress and headache this place will put on the patient, family and friends.

If you like waiting hours for appointments without any notification from staff this is the place for you. Do not make appointments as they are useless.

Nurses don’t want work. The service they provide its horrible. Carrielle is the worst. This place really sucks in terms of nurse services. Surgeon was pretty good thoe!

do not go here or to any of their outpatient centers! they will charge a facility fee that is not covered by the insurance, and they are not required to tell you!

Have had 6 surgeries here. I love my doctors, I love the nurses, cutting edge technology, I could go on… Pre Op check in was easy and they are well organized. I’ve never gotten an infection or sick after any of my surgeries while being there, which attests to their cleanliness.

I am a student at University of Miami and I went to University Hospital for my earache on January 2015. Before I went to the university hospital to see a specialist, I went to student health center at the campus. When I asked about the hospital fees to the front desk, they told me that I only need to pay for copay which cost $ 40. I went to ENT department, and they conducted many test that were not really helpful to me. I had only earache and it was very easy to treat. I have been to hospital on January and I received 3 bills on March 24^th, April 21^st, and June 11^th. They charged me $ 850 for the first two bills and $ 280 for the last bill. I called the hospital many times but I waited on the line for 45 min, 3 times and the representatives were not very helpful to answer my questions. Fortunately, my insurance company paid some part of the bills and I end up paying around $ 200 which is still to expensive for a 5 minute office visit. I e-​mailed and called them many times but couldn’t get a reasonable answer to my questions. I will never ever go to Uhealth hospital again.

Avoid UM Hospital at all costs. I had a sports injury, took about 8 weeks to get an appointment. Finally got one, and they sent me for an MRI, but ordered the wrong MRI. So, when I met with my surgeon, I had to do a second MRI, costing me another $ 500.
Further, the billing is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. They separate your accounts (I currently have 3 accounts for some reason) and send you separate bills. When I try and go online to pay the bill, the website doesn’t recognize my account number. When I call the number to pay the bill, it says «Sorry, you’re call can’t be completed at this time.» I have also been told that the call center is «Too busy, we will call you back.»
I also had to get a Catscan. I had the Catscan in September 2014, and just received the bill today, 9 months later, with a brand new account number.
If the healthcare was good, maybe this wouldn’t matter. But overall, this is the worst hospital I have ever been to. Avoid it.

University of Miami Hospital system has established state of the art clinics with Bascom, Sylvester, and Plantation. As for the main facility which use to be Cedars it still needs work. Rarely you find an employee who speaks And understands English. A bit outdated and run down. On the other side of becoming an employee you see what University of Miami Hospital is about. With the exception of the mention clinics above, the main hospital lacks morale amongst employees. Human resources is composed of fickle and spiteful women on a power trip. Employees who have been bred in the system are rude to new staff and have no higher standards in patients care. I am surprised many come out alive with the below standard of care many patients receive. Those in charge are bullies who push anyone in a corner if they do not suck up to them. Tremendous lack of leadership from charge nurses and also administration.

I literally just found out this was Cedars Hospital about 10yrs ago! When I would say I’m in UM Hospital everyone thought I was in Jackson. I have Never been there.
This huge training hospital has all Private rooms and many Critical Care Areas. Sylvester Institute is on the side of this building. All of the testing, operating, outpatient visits all under one roof. Starbucks is even on the 2 or 3^rd floor in hospital. Cafeteria is priced ok and food is good. No discount if a family member is in hospital.
Parking! What A Nightmare!!! Ok they charge to park which I think IS just Wrong! In there for a reason, not to shell out more $ I may need for medicines. So yes I raised cane! The maximum amount a day now is $ 6.00. Be sure you bring in your ticket to be validated. Handicapped parking were Not being charged at all and the garage decided to change this 1-​15-​2015. I contacted hospital administration and they had NO idea this was happening! Literally! I’m so glad I made that call and it began a chain of events to get this changed back! You bet I will be talking to the Vice President again about this.
Right now if you park in the main garage; and you need the hospital. You will Go to 3^rd floor in the elevator in the garage. You may have to walk to the entry to hospital; it’s across the other side of the garage. You will see everyone going that way, don’t worry. Outpatient go to 1^st floor in the garage elevator and get out go to the right and the doors are right there saying outpatient. You may get X-​rays, labs, Cat Scans all done there. I actually try to get my tests done where my Dr works to aide them actually seeing the test, not just results. A specialist may see something another Dr may not.
All in all the nurses are RNs and have Patient Care Assistants (PCA) to take vitals and they help alot! All the Nurses and any technician I’ve had contact with in X-​Ray, Lab, CT, and few others have ALL been Very Professional!

Look, if you don’t like something that is happening like you’re getting an IV and you’ve been stuck twice already. Please don’t be afraid to not let them try it again. They should Not. Someone like the Head Nurse should be called in now. It’s your body and you only go through what you allow. If you know you have a certain area good for IVs too, speak up and tell them! Many try to stick an IV in my hand or the bend of my arm. No!!! Bend– means I must try to keep my arm straight and it’s really hard to go to the bathroom. Hand– just painful. Tiny veins and the IV needle is longer than most of the places in the hand so pain.
This is a good facility and will not just make you have tests to make $. All kinds of insurance is accepted.

This is a miserable place with poor signage and expensive confusing parking. My wife has a 10 am appointment and we were just informed at 11:10 to expect another hour and a half. That’s the doctors fault not the hospital. I’ll post a photo of everyone who was just told delay could be 4 hours.

A large part of this past weekend was spent here because my mom was rushed to their emergency room Friday. Though myself and other family members pushed for Mercy Hospital, this (or JMH) were the closest to her primary doctor so UMH/​Cedars it was. My mom is feeling better so I’ll give them more than one stars but this hospital is still not my first choice for medical treatment.
For one, because their proximity to the courthouse and jail they have a default parking fee of $ 100 unless validated by the hospital. If I’m rushing to see a critically ill loved one in the Emergency Room, grabbing a parking ticket is not my first thought. If it hadn’t been for a kind security guard I would have been out $ 100. Thus, take your parking slip and get it validated.
Signage could stand some improvement, as I was not the only one who ended up in the no-man’s land mechanical courtyard under the ramp after exiting the south elevator.
As far as medical treatment, I was definitely glad to have friends who are EMT and a good data plan on my phone to access WebMD. It is a big city Emergency Room and an elderly relative with a heart condition is likely next to be next to an individual with a skin condition. If it wasn’t for me taking screenshots of my mom’s monitor and asking my EMT friend questions to finally push the doctors into action… To their credit, once they finally did see my mom’s symptoms the treatment was good and mom recovered. So you must be vocal and get their attention.
I’d also suggest to avoid their food. Both mom and another relative who ate hospital food got sick. Just sayin’

How often do you get to have lunch while pretending you’re in the cast of Grey’s Anatomy?
While waiting for a friend who was having surgery, I decided to scope out the Cafeteria at the UM Hospital. I was thinking something along the lines of grill style food. You know the type: burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches, etc. You better think again…
This cafeteria is stocked to the gills with healthy options. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner you can have a decent sized meal for fewer than ten dollars. It offers discounts to the employees, students, and faculty of the medical school and the hospital. But still, under $ 10.00 is a deal!
The breakfast menu includes everything from scrambled eggs, an omelet station, grits, hash browns, corned beef hash, a variety of sausages and bacon, oatmeal, and even fresh fruits. Lunch brings out even more options. A salad bar, fresh deli sandwiches, carved roast beef and baked potato, even sushi! The same lunch menu runs into the dinner hours with the exception of the deli which closes at 3:30pm. You can pick from a variety of drinks including low calorie options and even those protein heavy drinks for the fitness conscious. I was impressed! And, if you still want that grill type food, they got it too! It’s hard to believe there’s a hospital here somewhere…
I was lucky enough to sit with an OB/​GYN, a cardiologist, and two thoracic surgeons who were talking at great length and in full detail about procedures, surgeries, and all manner of medical talk. Yet, when one asked me what I was doing there and I replied that I was Unilocaling the place, the talk turned to how happy they are with the services and the food available in the cafeteria. Even the Cardiologist was telling me about how delicious the fried chicken was!
Next time you’re visiting someone at this hospital or just here playing doctor, make sure you visit the cafeteria. Who knows, it could be good practice if you do ever get cast in a prime time medical drama…

My father was admitted after an ER trip. They didn’t know what it was he had after all the exams, blood work, X-​rays had been administered. He was there for eight days and I must say everyone was so attentive and pleasant. He stayed on the 8^th floor.
His nurses Natasha, Glenda, Guiliana, Ivan, especially Joy, even the food attendant Agustine were outstanding! I’m sorry if I forgot to mention someone.
Clearly a hospital stay is never a great experience especially when a loved one is not well but they really did try their best to make it one. Everyone from security to nurses to transporters to customer relations. My father was very satisfied with the service this hospital offered him. We live near Kendall AMI and when he wanted to go to ER I drove him all the way to UM Hospital. We have no regrets.

It’s 3:00 am I’ve been here since 6:30 telling them I need my medication. I’ve yet to see it. They came in to tell me that the blood thinners I take for my two dvt’s I can’t take because it’s after midnight, I’m here for an infection and can’t stop throwing up so my dr ordered all the meds that can be to be iv. Well they came up in pill form. So I am still waiting. This is so unprofessional. Go to Jackson

I’ve only been to the emergency room here, but absolutely had the worst experience.
I took my friend and was first baffled that I had to push a button to get a parking ticket for E.R. parking. Like, what?! Someone got shot and you’re telling me I have to push a button to get a ticket?! (Side note: she was not shot. But I thought that it was ridiculous.)
The parking was extremely tricky and difficult to maneuver. I had to wait quite a while until I was even able to get a spot.
My friend came for severe back pain as she has been dealing with an injury. She was very concerned because the pain had gotten much worse and made it difficult for her to breathe. Instead of examining her and giving her x-​rays, they gave her pain meds. Which did absolutely nothing.
When the doc came back and asked her how she was feeling, she said not any better. She even tried to suggest that she go and get a massage before releasing her mistake and apologizing.
Finally, she just sent her off with a prescription for muscle relaxers even after she said that they weren’t alleviating her pain. When she asked where the nearest 24-​hour pharmacy was, the doctor said she didn’t know. Are you kidding me!!!
We finally found one close by and the pharmacist was able to give us directions to an open pizza place in the middle of the night. The fact that a pharmacist would know that information and a doctor would know so little was shocking.
The waiting room in the E.R. is extremely dismal and depressing, even by hospital standards. I would not go here unless you have to.

I have been happy with my medical care… but today I encountered your parking system… which is an absolute joke.

Everywhere you go you will have good experiences, bad experiences, or neutral.
My visits to UMH Outpatient building were great. Going to a hospital is never fun, and most fear the waits, mistreatment, etc. Everyone I encountered with — from security to registration, and physicians — were kind and helpful. Definitely will return shall I have the need again. Hopefully not in a long, long time.
Important note: validate your ticket or otherwise you will pay $ 100. That’s absolutely insane!

Had to give it one star. Would love to give nothing. HORRIBLE. My mother in law was taken there because she was unresponsive. They said it was a UTI. Packed her with meds and sent her home. Refused to keep her over night. 85 year old woman. She was rushed the following day because she continued to be unresponsive. Turns out she has a head injury. Brain full of blood. Emergency surgery. Family waiting and waiting after surgery. Do you think the doctor came out to talk to the family? NO. Nurse finally approached and said she was already in ICU. Had been for a while.
No customer service whatsoever. They don’t care about the patient. HORRIBLE.

Best staff in the world!

I’ve had a couple of outpatient procedures which turned into hospital stays for several days done at this hospital, and I’ve got to say, it’s by far the nicest hospital I’ve ever stayed at… probably because it’s so new and right next to JMH.
And everything looks nice compared to ancient JMH.
The nurses were all really nice. The only downside is that they didn’t have any private rooms available while I was there (if they even have any), and when you’ve been hospitalized for over 2 months, the last thing you want is to share a room with someone whose family shows up with Jamaican jerk chicken for their lunch… especially when you haven’t been allowed to eat for weeks either.
The parking garage seems to be kind of far from the hospital entrance, and the neighborhood gets VERY scary at night. I always tried to get my family out of my room before the sun went down.
