Schoepp Motors Middleton

Just like the other Schoepp Motors in town. They must hire brand new people to be car salesmen or the old farts that have been in the industry for decades. You can smell their bullshit all the way down the road… it’s better than using a GPS to find them… easier too.

Lured by a $ 15 oil change coupon/​sticker on the front of the State Journal I stopped in. No problem using coupon, I was second in line. In and out in less than 30 minutes with none of the usual attempts to sell other services. All in all a fabulous deal with very good customer service.

I had an experience similar to Kelley’s. I wonder if this is just how they treat women in their 20’s.
I went in to take a look around. The part where they showed me cars was fine – the salesperson was knowledgeable and affable and it was a good time, although they didn’t really have the car I wanted.
The irritation started in the sales room. The car was out there in the lot at a discount price of $ 13k. (Technically $ 12,995 or something, but we all know that’s $ 13k.) I explained that I didn’t want to go over $ 10k, and repeated this point to the salesman while he slowly inched a few hundred down from $ 13k, all the while using old school linguistic tactics like repeating «You want this car,» (even though I told him during the test drive that one of my two majors had been linguistics…) and «it’s not going to make much of a difference on your monthly payment.» (… I had also told him that my other major was math.)
When I asked him if I could just take a copy of all the papers home and think about it, he blurted out, «What if it were $ 10k?»
«…Would you sell me this car for $ 10k?» I said, in faint disbelief that they could afford to make a cut that deep.
So I signed something agreeing that I was serious about the $ 10k offer and he took it to the manager. Some 10 minutes and a bathroom break later, he came back and wrote a number on the page, which started with 12. I believe it was $ 12,400.
«That’s not 10,» I said.
What ensued was a two hour headache as he called in the manager as they attempted to tag-​team me into buying the car, ultimately going as low as $ 11k and showing me their auction records to prove that they really couldn’t afford to go lower. Finally, after being carted around the lot another time, standing in the manager’s office, I repeated for the last time that the car was probably just «too good» for me, and that I really wanted to go home and take a shower.
They finally let me go. Or so I thought.
That night I got a call from the manager, asking if I’d made a decision. I just took a nap that afternoon, and told him as much, and figured it was standard follow-​up. Then I got a call the next day at 10 from the salesman. I explained that I was in the middle of sorting out my new apartment and would probably handle the car thing next week. That didn’t stop me from getting a call the next day at 10. And the next. Finally, I asked him if he would stop calling me daily, and he replied, «It’s my job.»
Awkward silence. I briefly considered putting them on my block list.
«…But I’ll stop calling you.»
Thankfully he kept that promise. That’s why they get 2 stars instead of 1.
I was puzzled that they were so well-​reviewed on Google, but there must be something funny happening there, because everyone I spoke to (two different hotel staff people and a taxi cab driver) agreed that they were «sleazy».
If you’re not completely sure you want a car from their lot (check online first) you probably shouldn’t go unless you have two hours to burn. And don’t give them your phone number. Alternatively, try East Madison – there are a ton of different car dealers out in that area and every single one I tried was less aggressive (read: annoying) than Schoepp Motors.

Growing up I always heard the commercials for Schoepp. It was time to sell my Infiniti and get something different. I looked around Madison and Schoepp had a Camry that really caught my eye.
I worked with Patrick who made the process fairly seamless. The finance part could had been explained a little better.

I’d rather spend more somewhere else (and yes, I have). Schoepp is a total crapshoot. While shopping there, they had me take a car home with me to help me think about it. Upon getting home, I crawled underneath to find extensive damage to the frame and bumpers. From the outside it looked fine. When I returned it and pointed out all the issues, they said they’d fix it all. Really? What kind of inspection do these cars go through when Schoepp gets them? NONE, I’m betting. I don’t believe it should be the customer’s burden to find everything wrong with the car before buying it. A quality sales establishment would put a good product on the lot. Schoepp wants to sling them through as quickly (and cheaply) as possible.
After my experiences with them, I know why they have the lowest prices — they’re not investing anything into their product.
As I said, it’s a crapshoot. If you know a lot about cars and are handy, you could get a pretty good deal here. Or, you could take your chances and get lucky. If you decide to pursue a car at Schoepp, I’d HIGHLY recommend using a local mechanic to do their $ 50 once-​over used car inspection to see if there are any red flags.

Look at a different dealer. After spending the day on the lot, until closing time… I had found the car I was willing to by. I was the last customer out the door that night and arrived as they were opening the following day. They were having difficulty «getting me a loan» and suggested that I get a more expensive car than the one I wanted. Even went so far as to prepare a second car that THEY wanted me to buy. When I told them I was not interested in the other car the salesman tried to tell me the car I was interested was looked at by another buyer that had put a deposit on the car. I was there when they closed the night before and there when they opened… no one else had been in that day. I told them my money would spend anywhere and the manager came in and told me there was a mistake, no one else was interested in the car. I saved them the time and trouble and just paid cash out right for the car only after they came down on the price by two-​grand.
I have had the car 4 months and it was sold to me needing some work, Warped front rotors and transmission flush. They tried to show me a bogus car fax, I paid and printed out a current one online and showed THEM the car fax.
Its a decent car, but poor sales tactics. Just keep driving to a different lot unless you are ready to fight back.

Well, buyer beware. We got a good deal here but you have to walk in with knowledge. I also have a friend who has purchased numerous cars here and gotten good deals.
But here are some things to note. When we were going to leave they wouldn’t let us and cornered us at the door. They had our license plates off our car before we agreed to anything. After we signed the papers for what was a good deal they literally threw my new keys into the new car as they were locking up the store. lol.

I kept trying to hold out hope that Schoepp Motors is a good place.
The Good:
1. I bought my car from them in February, and so far, it’s a good car. I only had one problem with it, and it was a ‘common problem with civics.‘
2. There is one guy in particular who works in the service department who is exceptionally friendly, and has been each time I’ve dealt with him. Yay for that dude, whoever he is.
The Ick:
1. The guy who sold me my car pressured me into signing NOWNOWNOW, and used fear tactics like nobody’s business. This is possibly because I’m a 20-​something woman who came in alone. Obviously, because I bought the car, his tactics worked… but I was pissed about how I was treated. Also, I had to ask him for the Carfax report no less than 5 times (including the time when he’d finally retrieved the report, but was holding it, instead of handing it to me), because he kept wanting me to sign papers instead of making sure I wasn’t buying a flooded car. He had no respect for my budgetary or loan-​length desires. I almost walked out on him, but I knew how hard it was to find a car just like the one I bought for the price, so I caved.
2. Apparently, you have to agree to an $ 85 charge up front before a mechanic will «look» at your car. Any labor or parts are additional. This was still the case when they knew exactly what my «very common problem» was and how to fix it. The repair ended up being over $ 150 (but fortunately, I’d purchased an expensive warranty, so it was covered – but they made me sign the $ 85 agreement BEFORE they found out if my warranty would cover the charges or not).
3. The lady at the service center counter who messed up, but then tried to blame me for parking where I did, as though I would know. This same person got extremely snippy with me when I questioned the $ 85 charge («Do you want him to look at the car or not?! Then sign here»).
So, despite the pretty, polished interior, there’s an insidious vibe going on at Schoepp Motors. I’ve decided that they’re getting no more of my business, unless I’m forced to go there for warranty repairs.
