DoubleTree Midland Plaza

It’s an old, unrefreshed Doubletree in the heart of downtown Midland. If you need to be downtown, there are slim pickings. Most of the care has been put into the lobby, so things look pristine until you get on the elevator to your room. The dresser (which has been rigged to double as a safe and TV stand) was literally falling apart in our room. The bathroom functions well, but looks ancient. The fitness center was a little ridiculous — I’m 6’2″ and could hardly raise my arms above my head in the space. There is a nice outdoor seating area for pleasant evenings, and the staff is very friendly. That said, it seems like a lot of modern options are going in around Midland. Hopefully this location will renovate too and keep up!

I stay here every time I come to midland. The hotel is older, but the rooms are comfy and the location is great. In recent years the price was outrageously inflated like the other hotels in midland due to the oil boom, but now they’re back to a more adequate rate. They have free valet, but I just park in the garage and take the elevator up to my room. The staff is friendly and I’ll definitely be back.

For $ 240 a night I will judge and I will judge harshly.
One, for a Doubletree, this place is very blah. I stay in a lot of Doubletrees and this is the only time I ever felt let down by taste, comfort, and quality.
This room, 536, is too small to be rented out as a double queen. IMO it would be a small room for a single queen.
Just so you know there’s double peepholes and handicap shower gear in this one so if this is the accessible room I cringe thinking what the regular rooms must be like. As long as I’m talking about that, if you need extra room for assistive devices there are about: Eighteen inches on the outside edge of both beds and maybe about 36 inches between them.
(You have four and a half feet, tops, at the foot of the bed.)
The beds are hard and unforgiving. It’s decorated like my dead grandmother threw up all over everything.
Two, the last thing I want to do at 1:30am is have to call reservations and get them to apply my corporate codes to the reservation because the front desk can’t figure it out.
«We don’t have a rate like that.»
«Yes, you do.»
I showed her the rate on my corporate travel portal.
«Well if you can do that through an app then do it through the app.»
I shouldn’t stand there arguing. I’m tired. I ended that call and said as nicely as I could that the fact I had to make that phone call and beg for my negotiated rates means that «something went very wrong here» and that its something very specific to this property, because I don’t have this problem at any other Hilton property I ever stay at. Anyone else can do it with my company name and badge, and here I was giving that and the corresponding account # for her as well.
I told the front desk person no less than three times that I don’t drink alcohol, one for each time during the check in process that she suggested the bar on my way up to my room or said they could drop off a glass of wine for a nightcap. Maybe I seemed stressed, or just seething with enough latent irritation to come across as alcoholic.
I kept my cool and after we talked some more I decided she was a real super nice person and just trying to make me feel welcome. I actually like her after all that. She has a great attitude, she just wasn’t listening.
Breakfast is an overblown high pressure and pretentious affair. I got challenged as to whether I was a guest. Most humiliating interview I’ve been through for some DRY BREAKFAST POTATOES. Oh my god. I am just wanting to unceremoniously scarf down breakfast while I telecommute all bleary-​eyed and I’m not interested in a formal sit down affair. For $ 240, just give me a styrofoam box and leave me the Eff alone please. I was so uncomfortable.
I’d rather see all of the contrived elegance in the hotel room (in which there was absolutely zero) than the dining room but if thats your thing, yes, it’s very stuffy and elegant. #somethingnicetosay
Later on the host did apologize when she saw me talking to guest services and realized I was in fact a guest.
Guess I would have been better off at the Hampton Inn again.

For the money this is not the greatest value in Midland.
This hotel used to be a Hilton, but was downgraded to a «Doubletree by Hilton.» Probably due to it’s age and it’s need for a major renovation.
For $ 50 less, you can stay in a «all suites» hotel across town and receive FREE BREAKFAST, FREE evening BEER & WINE, and FREE DINNERS (M-​Th). You can spend the $ 50 savings on a rental car and get free food and drinks to boot!
CHECK-​IN: Fast & Efficient
ROOM QUALITY: Barely Acceptable.
Closet door would not shut (due to building settlement?)
Carpeting was stained.
Room lighting was dark — even with all of the light on !
A/​C unit would not shut off — it ran ²⁴⁄₇.
Room safe is on the floor under nightstand and is difficult to access without sitting on floor.
ROOM DECOR: Dated, Carpets & Upholstery need cleaning.
BED: Comfortable — best part of the stay.
BATHROOM: Small. Funky shower design. Very difficult for 2 to share bathroom. Woodwork around door near shower was rotting from water exposure.
PUBLIC AREAS: Coffee counter and snack bar in lobby serves Starbucks coffee. Good quality coffee drinks!
BUSINESS CENTER: (2) computer stations and color printers are excellent for getting work done on the road
BAR: Dark and poorly lit. No windows, it was like being in a basement.
RESTAURANT: It also does not have any windows. The artificial lighting gives it a claustrophobic feeling. Breakfast buffet is only $ 12 and includes an omelet bar.
Meals were adequate, but not great. Venture out into the downtown and experience the culinary disasters of Midland. This is not Manhattan or San Francisco, so don’t expect fine cuisine.
CONVENEINCE: Downtown. Within walking distance to almost all of downtown.
TERRACE BBQ: Good value. The meats are smoked prior to being heated on the BBQ. Request 1 level rarer meat than you are used to, due to the pre-​cooking in the smoker. The rib-​eye steaks are HUGE for only $ 25!
VALET PARKING: Fast & Free. Tips accepted.
CHECK OUT: Quick. Disappointed that they did not slip a copy under my door on the last night.
FAMOUS COOKIES: Hidden under the front counter. Unlike other Doubletrees that place them out for the taking, they hoard them and keep them hidden.
ROOM SELECTION:
Avoid the North Tower or rooms that face the highway or RR tracks. Rooms over the Terrace can be noisy if they are hosting outdoor bands/​music (couple of nights per week). Freight trains run through town ²⁴⁄₇.
BEST ROOMS are the upper rooms, South Tower, facing downtown. If wind noise keeps you up, then select a lower floor, as Midland can get windy.

So, we were driving home from ABQ to San Antonio when the roads got icy. We found this hotel was over an hour away (at 40mph…) but Hiltons are better than anything where we were so we headed there. After several harrowing events on the drive, we were looking forward to a nice check-​in, cocktail, relaxation. Greeted by Ms Cranky-​breeches at the desk who clearly did not give a rat’s backside about our brushes with death, as evidenced by her glare at our greeting. She gave no explanation for being put on a floor other than the Hilton Honors floor; we have no quarrel with being on a lower floor but she knew we were members and should have commented. When we inquired regarding the package we had purchased, she essentially said she had no idea and we could call back down if we wanted our wine to be sent up. She also neglected to give us our breakfast coupons. And, although it is a small thing, no cookie…
We are now checked into our room, our phone does not work and we are headed down for cocktails. Happy New Year!
Update — very funny. New year’s eve, right? Bad weather. Restaurant had several cancellations so leadership sent some of the staff home. Unfortunately for them, they are the only thing open in the area so they got pounded with walk-​ins. My waiter worked in the Finance office — and he was great! They had folks from all over the hotel staff working the restaurant, everyone was covering each other, service was terrible but great… Friendly, funny, really had a good time. Wish the food had been worthwhile. It was mediocre at best. Sad arugula salad without arugula, spinach instead. Out of half the menu (can’t blame that on the crazy leadership decision to send folks home…).
And, when we got back to our room, wine and breakfast coupons had STILL not arrived.
Final update: Room was good, bed comfortable, awful pillows (either too flat or hard as a rock, nothing just right). Tough to get the temperature adjusted to comfortable but that may have been because of how bitterly cold it was outside (wind chill –7). Shower was great, typical accoutrement but with the addition of a small plastic scrubby! Excellent!
Went to front desk at check out and was told that there were multiple people missing stuff from check-​in last night. Manager was late coming in due to weather but when she arrived, she modified our rate to take out the extra cost for the package and gave us free breakfast. Handled very well.

This is actually a Doubletree by Hilton and not a Hilton. The valet is free! Refreshing. The staff is awesome. They couldn’t possibly be more helpful. The GM spent an hour tracking down some floss when I had left mine at home after offering to take me to a store to buy some.
Would be 5 stars if not for the price, the age of the property and the breakfast quality and service. They tried to charge me $ 7 for my free breakfast and there wasn’t any oatmeal. Better quality bread options would be nice as well. Frozen bag potatoes for $ 269/​night? I brought this to the front desk and they treated me to a movie and a couple drinks. They told me the restaurant profitability has nothing to do with the rest of the property. Perhaps they should rethink this because the cook this morning didn’t actually know what butter is. I’m not joking. Eggs out of a carton probably pasteurized and frozen and «butter» out of a jug. If you’re going to pretend to be a restaurant and serve food, you cannot any longer have this disconnect of not knowing how processed food affects your body. Serving dangerous food is a serious matter and buying products that are simply cheap and profitable is deplorable. People who know absolutely nothing about food shouldn’t be in the food industry. It’s that simple. Just because it’s legally available from Sysco doesn’t mean it isn’t dangerous to eat. Most of the processed food that is available here in the U.S. is banned worldwide. You are allowed to eat anything in this country but it doesn’t mean you should.

Terrible hotel. Two times during 4 night stay the fire alarm went off, and one time at 12:15am. The sprinkler line leaks and sets off the alarm. I heard that this problem has been going on for a while (Sept 2014).

As far as Doubletree’s go, this one was nicely updated in terms of the rooms. Restaurant was fine (albeit a bit slow at times). They also offer valet parking (even though there is a self-​park lot behind the hotel). Exercise room fine, very doubletree like. No complaints.

Although I have never stayed at this hotel, I am there all the time. I often go to the restaurant for lunch, the bar for drinks after work, and have held multiple functions here. The staff always goes over the top to make sure I have everything I need and that everything is 110%. All my friends who have stayed here absolutely love it. The manager is fantastic.

Good downtown location. Frenidly helpfull staff. Decent rooms, normally Double Tree hotels are very clean and well appointed, this one was a bit run down however.
The front desk is very busy in the am with conferences as is the coffee shop so plan for a few extra minutes if you want to grab a quick cup before you go.

Free valet parking off site, but left something in the car, so inconvenient but they retrieved the car quickly each time we needed it. Spacious room but tiny bathroom. Was impressed by personal note written by staff and waiting for us, along with a tin of mints and a letter opener! Staff very friendly and helpful.

The high points of this hotel are the complimentary valet parking and the friendly staff. Other than that, it has little to brag about.
The hotel is smoke-​free, but you wouldn’t know by the odor of our room. It smelled like a mixture of old cigarettes, death, and smelly feet. The room felt extremely humid although the AC was on. Speaking of the AC, it rattles incessantly while in use. And anyone in West Texas in the summer knows that the AC is always on. That makes for a very loud sleeping experience. The bathroom is seriously tiny. So tiny that the towel rack is in the shower. Beds were comfortable. Bedding was decent.
We were awakened by housekeeping pretty early, which was our own fault for not putting out the «do not disturb» sign, but the worst part about it was they found the need to vacuum the hallway immediately outside of our door so early on a Sunday morning.
It wasn’t a terrible experience though, if necessary, I would probably stay there again, but it wouldn’t be my first choice.

good staff and crew and location

For this price, this place sucks. $ 399 a room. Ur retarded. Construction and train tracks all night. No thank you! Never again.

Nice new renovations– rooms are great, staff friendly. Only thing I did not like was the coffee kiosk in the lobby– it needs more product and better coffee.

I stay at the hotel weekly. They are currently going under renovations and the rooms look lovely and the customer service and staff has improved! The room service is stellar, the best service and food I have had. I will continue to stay at this hotel for months to come. And as for parking, I just realized there is a parking garage under the hotel… As parking is not ideal here.

This Hilton is technically a Doubletree hotel. While it is not the newest hotel in the land, it has character and customer service that make it stand out. Located in the heart of downtown, the hotel is directly across from the courthouse. Parking was a bit confusing at first, but if you drive around behind the hotel is a private lot free for hotel guests. All of the doors of the hotel are locked at 3PM except for the front entrance, so a bit of a pain to circle the hotel with a suitcase. They do have valet if you have loads of stuff. The hotel has 24-​hour room service, which I think this is the only hotel in the area to offer that. The hallways are still psychedelic green, but the rooms are neutral colors with an updated bathroom and TV. The TV has movies for purchase, plenty of channels, and HBO (also haven’t found this in any of the other hotels). The carpet in the rooms needs to be torn out and replaced, but hey no need to worry about spilling something. The downside is there is no fridge/​microwave, so would be more difficult for a long term traveler. Also, it’s a short distance from all of the restaurants and shopping so not as convenient as other places. However, since it is not right off the highway it’s pretty quiet at night. The hotel is only a couple of blocks from the George Bush family home, so a short walk for a little sight seeing.

Pretty average small-​town, Hilton. Probably a happening spot in it’s heyday, and probably THE hotel in town, but nothing special. It’s a bit outdated, but it’s palatable for a night or two. Full restaurant and bar and coffee shop on site.

I’ve been on a few business trips to Midland the past few months and have had horrible luck with hotels, until I finally found the Hilton. I stayed only one night on a Monday night but was pleased with my experience. Parts of the hotel are a little dated, but overall it’s a nice, clean property.
This will be my new home away from home on future Midland trips.

I stayed at the Hilton Hotel due to the proximity of it being in downtown Midland. Even though there is nothing to do in downtown Midland, it was a great location for the work convention I was going to.
The hotel had two towers and it was humungous. I saw the Hilton from the freeway, and it was large and long. Parking could have been bad, it was a $ 4.95 charge for parking across the street. I was lucky enough to find free parking in the back of the Hotel.
The checkin and 1^st floor of the hotel were modern. There was a nice restaurant and bar located in the hotel. I was expecting a quite modern hotel.
I went up to my room and was kind of blind. All the doors to the hotel rooms were light, bright green. The carpet looked old on the outside of the room. I entered the room and was impressed.
Entering the room, a shot of humidity hit me. The air conditioner was not on. It was a single room, old school air conditioner. I ran to it and turned it on, lowering it to sixty four degrees, fan at maximum
The room was modern with a nice flat screen television with over fifty cable channels. There was a nice, new, modern, coffee maker. The bathroom was nice too.
The drawback was the next morning. I noticed the bathroom plug was placed in the bathtub. I turned on the faucet to take a shower and I was unable to. I was unable to find a way to shift the water flow from the faucet to the shower head. I did not want to complain since it was 5am.
I ended up taking a bath. I felt five years old and missing a rubber ducky. A bubble bath would have been the topper. Later that morning, I told an employee and they showed me how to activate the shower. Damn, I’m slow and an idiot.
Another negative was the free wifi. It was extremely slow. I know I should not complain since it’s free but at no time could I open two websites at the same time. The video downloaded took forever. I thought I was using the first version of the internet due to the lag on connection. I also experienced multiple dropped internet connections. Must be AT&T.
This hotel is a pass even though the hospitality is impressive. The slow Wifi, shower issue, and green doors are a risk I will not take again.
