Midway City Feed Store

I’ve been coming here since I was a kid. I love the feel of the feed shop and even the less then helpful customer service is part of the atmosphere to me. I prefer this feed shop to all others with the exception is I find their prices tend to be $ 2-​$ 5 dollars on many feeds then their inland competition. Then again I’m sure their rent is higher then feed stores inland. If nothing elu se I encourage you to check it out. It’s not changed much in many (not going to say how many) years.

I Love this feed store! I came here for weeks before I was ready to get our chicks, and they were always super helpful and willing to help me learn what I should know before I get my backyard chickens started. The chicks are sexed and arrive stamped as «pullets» when they arrive. They are doing Great!
I was able to get everything I needed for them here. BUT, the biggest reason I am leaving the 5 star is that they took 6 chicks that were left in a box that were showing signs of being a rooster. I got them because I «had chicks», but they were not a good add to my current chicks as I was taught from them in the beginning. I felt bad for the chicks, but I didn’t know what to do with them. They offered to take them and find them a home even though they weren’t purchased from them, and found abandoned in a box.
I will continue to support this small business for all their help for me, and the community by taking in unwanted animals when even the rescues would not.

I have been coming to this store for years, as they have the best prices and more unusual items than your common place pet store.
One of my favorite parts about coming here is the adorable baby bunnies and chicks by the entrance, I always stop by them and say hi. And to the parakeets and pidgins they have for sale, too!
On a different note, I often throw bonfires. And this place has the best prices for the quality of wood that they sell, ontop of the wood being locally gathered. Not only would it be more expensive going to some place like walmart, but i get the satisfaction in knowing that i am supporting local businesses.
They also sell bales of hay, which i usually purchase four at a time for party seating and archery. Aside from the pet rabbit chewing at them sometimes, the older bales of hay are still well together. They will also help you load these and anything else you purchase into your car, with great conversation and attitude to boot!
In addition to those supplies, i also buy my chicken feed and rat food here (and toys/​treats/​medicine for my dog). $ 20-​ish dollars for a 50# bag of feed? Sign me up!
The only bummers are that they dont take card, and they dont sell high quality pet foods like Blue Buffalo. If they did, id never bother with places like Petco!

I love this place. Where else can you get bales of hay and straw in Orange County? I don’t know what happened with the other reviewers, but the workers are always very nice to me. They always help me with the bales and even put extra cardboard so my Leaf doesn’t get dirty. I find them to be reasonable but remember to bring cash or a check.

**Reposting since for some reason my original review was not recommended?** I absolutely hated this place! The worst customer service I have ever encountered! I am in the service industry, so thats huge for me. I have been here twice, and both times left literally feeling like s%#*, we were treated so bad. The first time I went, there were several employees, none of which were friendly, helpful, or polite. I totally felt like I was inconveniencing them when asking about products or tips on feed. We stood around waiting for help for at least five minutes, never even being acknowledged! And it was pretty obvious we needed help, standing there looking around, trying to make eye with the employees, only to be completely ignored until we approached someone who rudely told us he was helping someone else. We ended up leaving without ever buying anything, completely unwilling to give our business to them, swearing we would never go back. Well, a few months later, decided to try again as we were in a time crunch and this store is closer than another we usually go to, and it was the same thing all over again! It was only one guy this time, but again, totally felt like we were bothering him and stupid by asking questions, not friendly at all, kept walking away after we asked a question w/​o seeing if we had any more, the answers we received were short and not even helpful. Example– «What are pigeon pellets?» Answer-(in annoyed tone of voice) «Pellets for pigeons.» WTF!!! Thanks for nothing! I dont know who runs this store, but you need to have a serious talk w/​your employees. I’m all for people having off or bad days, but BOTH my experiences were ridiculously beyond that. I know I am going on and on, but it was THAT BAD!!! I have never even written a review on here before, but had to for this, because the service was APALLING!!! Dont waste your time going here unless you enjoy being treated like you are a hassle and a moron. For me the service completely cancelled out any of the positives of the store. I will NEVER go back to this store again! Will gladly drive the extra miles for better customer service.

Been going to Midway City since 1975, love the place. The staff is very knowledgeable about all sorts of animal issues. Good variety of quality hay and they will special order various grains to try. They helped us pick out chicks and we never got a rooster in the bunch, just nice hens, answered all our questions. Very down to earth, felt like we were back in 1952. Love the place.

I consistently avoid this place because they’re never pleasant anymore. They used to have some nice employees, but the only one that is still there is a grumpy man who seemingly can’t manage a smile or even a civl demeanor. Cash or check only, and unfriendly all the time… I think I’ll shop elsewhere even if it costs more.

This feed and animal supply company is located on a side street off of Hazard in an unincorporated section of Midway City. We frequent this place for wood shavings for my dogs potty box (don’t judge, they’re picky little shits). They also have all kinds of pet food, chicken coops, cute little baby chicks, and bunnies.

Looking for some medium quality cat food.
Friskies. Yikes, McDonalds of cat food.
Guess these demographics are what you get.

Best prices for quality hay.

The owner is very nice and the prices are all very good. I bought a 25 pound bag of feed for my quail and they are very happy. They also sell baby chicks, rabbits, other birds and of course cages and equipment to take care of them. Will definitely come back when I run out of feed or am in the area.

A guy dumped his rooster in an alley off of Beach Blvd & McFadden and walked away. How does someone do that???
When I checked with every possible rescue and individuals and couldnt find anyone to take in this little rooster the Westminster SPCA suggested I call Midway. When I explained the situation and asked the owner if he would take the rooster he said sure, no problem just bring him here! What a relief for both myself and Rooster Cogburn! Between the «so called MAN» who dumped him and having to stay in my guest bathroom while I tried to find him a home, its a miracle it didnt kill the little guy!

I love this place. It has the old-​fashioned feel of a country store.
The feed is good quality and way more affordable than the big-​name pet stores. I get food for my parakeet, chickens, and rabbit for a fraction of the cost anywhere else.
I think the people who gave bad reviews are simply trying to promote their own businesses. I have never noticed any of their animals being kept in bad conditions. I bought four Plymouth Barred Rock pullets a few months ago. The guy picked them out for me since I was unsure how to tell the breed when they were only 1 week old. I was nervous I would end up with the wrong breed, or worse, a rooster! Thankfully he chose correctly. My hens are huge, healthy Barred Rocks!
I also purchased a rabbit at the feed store, and he is a healthy little guy. I have never seen them being housed in uncomfortable conditions. And even though it is horrible for me to think of a bunny being fed to a snake, it really isn’t inhumane. Snakes have to eat too! It is a feed store!
Of course I have seen single chickens or ducks housed in a cage. This is a practical way to house older birds since they can be aggressive, and even kill each other if they haven’t been raised together. And I have never seen the same solitary bird in a cage – it is temporary. They are certainly not abused – nowhere near the conditions of most chickens in this country!
Lastly, the firewood is way more affordable than anywhere else, and the nice kid loaded it into my truck for me.

I love this place! Good prices and friendly service, and I feel like I’ve stepped back in time. I love that I can set up an account and they will deliver stuff at no extra cost. Who does that anymore?

Horrible service here. Particularly from one older man with gray hair. Barks responses to customers. I’ve gone in there 4 times to buy chicken feed (hoping that the service would be better than the last) and nope, no change. He throws the bags of feed at you covering you in dust and straw/​hay. A smile would be nice or a friendly hello. Customer service here needs attention. I’m definitely not coming back even for the prices.

Great, friendly service always. Family owned business. They are helpful and courteous and always willing to make feed recommendations.

This place gets 5 stars if only because it is in the most unlikely of places. It is a giant barn with old timey Americana signs nestled inbetween homes and Vietnamese owned businesses. It’s hard/​next to impossible to see from the main street (Bolsa) which only adds to the feeling that you’ve stumbled into a blackhole and been transported back in time 60 years.
As for feed, bedding, and live animals this place is a really good deal. Chicks are $ 2.50 a pop, hay is $ 10 a bale (and they’ll buy it back for $ 3 if you return it so it’s great for western decorations). We bought our chickens here and all their feed and bedding and I have absolutely no idea where else you could possibly buy this stuff short of driving to Nebraska.
Customer service is helpful but in a only-​if-​you-​need-​it kinda way. They aren’t rushing around trying to upsell you roosters or the newest brand of organic alfalfa. The only downside (and yet another sign that when you come here you’ve time traveled to 1952) is it is cash only so be prepared.

I figured out that this feed store is the cheapest way to feed and find bedding for your pets. I found this store years ago when I found out this is the cheapest and closest place for me to buy Koi food. Then I started buying my bird food, my snakes bedding, my kids guinea pigs. The place only takes cash but in the long run you save cash. I love how this feed store is like a time capsule. It is an old barn in the middle of modern Orange County, CA.

Love this place! First time here got a bunny for $ 5 and she is SOOO cute.

The old feed store. Been here in Midway City since 1973 and I remember going to the feed store as a kid. Midway City is pretty awesome, it used to have alot of open space before the mansions and housing got packed. I used to play army in the fields, went to Midway City Elementary, Visited the old Dairy on Newland daily, those are all gone! I still live here and although it is a bit more crowded now, you have places like the feed store that live on.
They have ducks here, They have chickens, all the feed and hay that goes along with having them. As I got older, we got our dog food here and firewood for camping trips. This place never changes, the people that work here are friendly and I enjoy anytime that I get to go buy something here. Bring your kids, the bunnys, chickens, birds are excellent entertainment for the 10 – 15 minutes that you need to get your dog food or firewood.
