It’s unbelievable — we had a very similar experience to what Christine experienced with our father. We fled the place. They are just not staffed and are unable to care for anyone that needs more than a meal cooked for them. Any additional care is just not available — regardless of what their marketing/​director of operations tell you. What’s even worse — after we pulled our father from the facility, they doubled his personal service rate (i.e. the charges for their facility) — arguing that they had to have a 30 day notice — although they weren’t providing the services they had committed to – and then tried to collect them from the children. Don’t walk — Run from this facility — they are solely about the money — and not about the care of your loved one!

There is almost zero care available for your loved one as they are so poorly staffed.
The care provided my 84 year old father with onset Dementia, which we had been assured repeatedly was exactly what they were set up for, was so lacking that we decided we needed to remove him from their facility as soon as humanly possible. Examples of the lack of care we personally witnessed/​photographed upon our arrival was stool dried on the only chair in his room, no sheets on the bed, the mattress having dried defecation smeared on it, clothes that had feces and urine in them were laying next to and underneath the bed and on the floor in the closet.
After reporting this state to the two staff working that late afternoon — it still required multiple reminders over a three hour period and calls to Del, an administrator, before my Father’s place was cleaned up. Additionally my Father noted that he had not had any sheets since he was there — was unaware they were available — and had been sleeping under a towel since arriving from the rehabilitation facility until our arrival from out of state, and as a result could not turn up the A/​C in the room. When we entered his room, the temperature was over 80 degrees. We also went through the scheduling book with their staff and found no record of my father having been showered since he moved in (although he was supposed to be showered twice a week) — and this with him being incontinent and having bandages on both legs. This fact was also confirmed by my father saying he was only able to wash his face and under his arms with a wash cloth. My father is one that will never complain.
I don’t wish to use the abuse word — as I don’t know the technical definition of abuse in an assisted living facility — but in our layman’s terms, the conditions my father suffered were abusive. While we very much appreciated their unqualified apologies for the lack of service, the trust was completely broken and with us living as far away as we do (out of state), we felt it necessary to remove him as quickly as possible. As you know, In the case of a breach of the contract, a 30 day notice period is not required.
Oddly, even in light of the above, Sterling house and their financial/​collections office initially when learning of our family’s dissatisfaction, though they had provided zero bathing services or room cleaning to date, handed our family an increased bill of $ 1000 per month. They stated our father would now be more care than they had assessed him for, which as far as we could tell they hadn’t provided any. Not only has Sterling House so far refused to refund the monies paid for days we had paid in advance/​after we removed our father from this unsafe condition, they are asking for a 30 day notice per their contract and additional funds for an additional 30 days, as if this lack of performance did not void the contract??? Seriously!
It’s beautiful on the outside, it will make your heart ache on the inside if you put someone you love in this facility. Buyer beware!
