Highlands Ranch Resort

Our family just spent 2 nights in Nighthawk cottage. This is a lovely small resort. It locates at an open space in the Lassen forest that is very close to the National Park entrance. The view is very nice from the resort. The cottage is contemporary and new. Nighthawk has multiple big windows. We could see the forest even from the second floor. At night, we opened all windows to see the stars in the sky and let the breeze accompany us to sleep. The inn manager was hospitable and helpful. The food in the restaurant was very good. The servers were very kind and warm. They didn’t just serve the food we ordered. They were very thoughtful and care about details to provide us the best experience.
There are things I wish they could improve the next time we visit there. The Wifi was on and off. Since there’s no AT&T signal there, Wifi is almost the only way we could communicate with the outside world. The food took a little bit too long (~40 mins) to prepare. But it’s very delicious. The breakfast could easily get 4 stars if it’s in the Bay Area. The cottages are close to the main road. At night, we left all windows open. I could hear trucks run by even in the midnight. The noise was scary loud that woke me up at night several times.

Took our travel trailer here for a night. Spaces were large and they brought us firewood for a great campfire. The fire was after dinner in their fantastic restaurant. Wendy and her team are a machine, everything is just right and well coordinated. Even had live music. Can’t go wrong here.

Went there last night. Beautiful setting, impressive building and service was great. My wifes food was great. Mine must have been prepared by someone else. I had baby back ribs that were possibly the fattiest ribs I’ve ever had. They were tough and must have been cooked much earlier in the day. They were on a bed of ice cold white corn mashed potatoes. The asparagus was perfectly cooked. How these two meals came out of the same kitchen is amazing. Hope they fix the food issues as this area has NOTHING for foodies. I hope they survive because I would come every visit.

Today my husband and I took a drive up to have lunch here and let me tell you from the moment you drive in you are in awe at the scenery. We were greeted right as we walked in. Very warm and cozy feeling. Service outstanding! Food AMAZING! Real French fries! Waiter a delight to talk to. The view looking out at the beautiful cabins is breathtaking. As we watched each customer walk in you could tell they felt the same way. This place is a must see. Even if it’s just for lunch or dinner it’s well worth it. We are excited to visit again soon and bring our friends up to show them.

Each time we have returned we have again found the same issues! Slow service and then the foods luke warm to cold depending on your order. $ 14 for their burger and there was no lettuce, tomatoes or onions offered, could put them on as garnish.
However, you’ll not find a more beautiful setting in the Lassen area I just hope one of the owners will see the need for improvement.

If I could give 10 stars I would!!!

The Place:
Our cabin was really cozy, clean, and well designed with a remote controlled fireplace. Our cabin (#3) also had a private outdoor 2-​person jacuzzi. Bathrooms have heated tile! Beds are super comfy with luxurious sheets. The common lounge is comfortable and warm with plenty of cool places to lounge. The view is beautiful. And it would look even better with snow. We were here in September so we didnt see any.

THE FOOD:
The continental breakfast is actually a full-​throttle menu of select deliciousness. There’s about 6 main choices and they are all so tasty! Choices range from omelets and scrambles. Included is also coffee/​tea, toast, lavender greek yogurt with berries (yah!) and fruit salad. The dinner options are awesome. GET THE DUCK — Especially if you’re a steak fan!
I hope this place sticks around for a long time because we are definitely coming back.

The newly opened Highlands Ranch Resort was a fabulous find, and amazingly dialed in for being open such a short time. After a very sleepless night camping in the Lassen National forest area we decided to treat ourselves to lunch at the restaurant on our way into Lassen National Park. We were led to the patio, situated above Child’s Meadow — with beautiful views of meadow, trees and Brokeoff Mountain. A very warm welcome, beautiful scenery and the gracious demeanor of the proprietors, bartender and waitstaff — convinced us to stay. We planned on staying one night and ended up staying two as we had such a wonderful experience. The luxury cabin we stayed in was equipped with the softest linens, ceiling fan, hot tub, a small bar area with fridge, fireplace, and outdoor chairs strategically placed for privacy and a spectacular view of the meadow and mountains. The attention to detail was amazing.
Breakfast is included with the price of the an overnight stay, it was delicious and plentiful. We ate dinner in the restaurant a couple times and the food was great.
On our last night, we spent an evening at the bar with proprietor’s Kevin and Wendy, some local folks and staff. We had the best time. They all felt like long-​time friends. We will definitely be going back.
We wish everyone at Highlands Ranch Resort much happiness and success. They deserve it.

As we’ve traveled the scenic highways of northern California, it’s not uncommon to see the appellation «resort» attached to establishments that would be more likely identified with ghost towns. It’s an adjective you can’t trust, in fact, should make you run the other way. But Highlands Ranch Resort is the exception to the rule.
The rooms are newly constructed from stone and timber, with hardwood floors, sumptuous king beds furnished with high thread-​count sheets, fireplaces, and big screen cable TV. The size of the rooms is generous and the finishes well-​chosen to evoke a tasteful and luxurious mountain setting.
To complement the accommodations, Highlands dining offers outstanding seating on the outdoor deck, indoor dining room, and welcoming bar. The views from every choice are spectacular – whether of the pristine meadow and protective pine-​covered slope, landscaped grass/​fire pit common areas, or the lordly Lassen peaks. You won’t want to leave.
An excellent – and perhaps too large– breakfast is included with the price of the room. Our last day we had to leave before breakfast was served, and the day before, innkeeper/​owner Wendy graciously prepared a pic-​a-​nic basket for the road, that we stored in our room’s refrigerator until we pulled out the next morning. It featured muffins, hard-​boiled eggs, and lavender yoghurt with fruit. As they say, how good is that?!
Besides breakfast, we enjoyed two dinners, as well as drinks and appetizers. You could hardly find a more congenial and attentive crew of bartenders and waitresses to advise, then serve you the excellent food, beer, and wine. We can recommend the Volcano IPA… the Stoltman Sangiovese… the shrimp pasta (can’t remember what it’s called, exactly)…the calamari… the pear salad with candied walnuts. Desserts looked great as they came out to other diners, but we were stuffed.
In short… make it a point to come hike Lassen Peak or Bumpass Hell, then celebrate your conquest at Highlands Ranch Resort, whether for a delicious meal or a splendid night’s stay.

Beautiful setting, good food but very rude management. This could be a wonderful get away, so hope the owners gives their management staff some training in how to talk with customers!

Right off Highway 36 at Childs Meadows roughly about 20 miles west of Chester /​Lake Almanor area. You can’t miss it! It’s the beautiful lodge and cabins on the south side of the road on the edge of a peaceful, sweeping meadow.
The restaurant has a beautiful deck /​patio off the back and I bet you can enjoy a cocktail while watching deer graze in the evening. (We went for lunch and sat inside since it was a bit warm for our group… so no deer or cocktails at sunset for us — this time.)
The inside is AMAZING … BEAUTIFUL… GRAND…
The different woods… sweeping ceilings … big beams … hand crafted tables … lounge areas with TVs and fireplaces. It just begs to have a hot toddy and relax. Or grab a couple friends and schmooze over martinis. You could go either way. :)
The people are FANTASTIC!
Chef Joe is friendly and creative. Plus, he flies fish in FRESH from HAWAII every Tuesday and Friday. So, you’re sure to have a treat!
I hear Prime Rib Fridays are not to be missed and you MUST make reservations for this as they are booked on Fridays. Apparently, the Prime Rib is *that* good. (And this place is kinda outa the way so you don’t want to «chance it» … just call and make a rez.)
My group had a number of different lunch entrees.
My mom had the seared ahi salad. The ahi was fresh with a nice seasoning that wasn’t overpowering. The salad was big too… no need for anything else to fill you up.
I had the Portobello sandwich. It was good, but I think I’d order the Fish and Chips or Burger next time. Everyone who had those 2 items were raving and cleaning their plate.
All in All… I really hope they make it through the winter until we go back up next Summer.

We decided to stray off our path to Oregon and stay here for the night. It was well worth the extra drive time. The resort is beautiful and peaceful. The hospitality is superb and the cottages are pure luxury. We stayed in the Meadow’s Edge cottage and enjoyed the hot tub over looking the back meadow.
We ate in the lodge for dinner. Prices were fair and the food good. Breakfast was great! It comes with the room rental and was more food than we could eat.
We would definitely stay here again!

Beautiful little cottages in an open meadow, ideally located next to Lassen National Park.
Highlands Ranch Resort combines the luxury with the rustic. The cottages manage to be comfortable, private and spacious, while maintaining the sense of being in Lassen National Forest. I think the effect comes from the large and copious windows, along with the screen doors. They’ve got everything you’d expect in a modern hotel, satellite TV, hair dryer, etc, with wifi in the works (I think, as its currently only available at the main lodge). Even a hot tub, although we didn’t make use of it.
The meadow surrounding the property is stunning, with views of broke off mountain, and other surrounding peaks. There is a shared firepit in the center, as well as the main lodge deck, where this can all be soaked in.
The lodge itself matches the cottages in style, where they also serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Breakfast was yogurt with fresh fruit and honey, a fruit platter, and eggs to order, bacon and toast. It worked as a good start to a day out hiking, and its free. Dinner is a decently sized menu, I have to recommend the starter of tempura fried green beans with a sriracha aioli. I’m not always the biggest fan of tempura, but this worked really well. Only disappointment was the desert (blueberry cobbler), which came out cold. I’d like to give them the benefit of the doubt here as they had only opened 2 weeks beforehand.
The biggest thing that made this place stand out though was the service. We arrived late at night, and managed to miss a sign on the way up that stated there were no gas stations for 68 miles. Whoops. We ended up pretty much coasting in to the resort with an empty tank. I mentioned it to Kevin (the owner?) as we arrived, and he had a couple gallons of gas for us ready by the time we’d finished breakfast the next day. He wouldn’t even let me pay for it.
Very impressed and look forward to a return visit.
