Werschky II A G, MD

Dr. Werschky has been our family doctor for several years and has dealt with both the mundane day to day issues as well as some very serious health problems. We have never found him to be anything but caring and very knowledgable. I’ve been through 3years of medical school and, believe me, I know the difference between a good doctor and a not so good doctor. He never rushes you in and out. He pays close attention to detail and asks the right questions in order to find a safe solution to your problem. His office, in a wooded area of Miller Avenue, is charming and relaxing. His staff are polite and helpful. Dr. Werschky practices medicine as it used to be, before we had «factory medicine». He is the epitome of everything that is good about the family doctor. A good man!

I have seen Dr. Werschky for more than 10 years for myself and my 20 year old daughter. He has been cordial and thorough. I was originally referred to him to have a parasite treated, which I acquired as the result of a trip to South America. Having done military service in Vietnam he was very familiar with parasite identification and treatment. However I also highly recommend him for anyone wanting a personal, cordial approach to their medical needs.

Dr. Werschky, I’ve been told by his office, will not deign to see people who signed up for insurance through the Affordable Care Act. Discrimination? I think so. I can believe it after seeing the other negative reviews here …

Dr. Werschky has been my physician for over 25 years. The reason he is my physician is that he provides the service, personal attention and care which we once associated with small-​town family doctors with the knowledge of the best big city practitioners.
He attends conferences, updates himself aggressively with the literature, and often is in touch with the authors to give himself the best skills. He does not limit his visits to a quick review of your chart and a scrip.
He listens careullly and asks questions. He also knows the patients as individuals. He will call you promptly with test results. He will also call you to see how any chronic or other problems are coming along.
He does not have fancy furniture, that is true. What that means for me as a patient is that he does not make me pay for a visit to Roche Bobois or Limn. Do you seriously rate your doctor by the modernity of the furniture?
I have no idea what John W means by his reference to the office smelling badly. It is always scrupulously clean.
The receptionist and office maanger L has a sense of humor. so does the doctor.

I am extremely reluctant to write a negative review of Dr. Werschky, but I feel I need to. I have seen him three or four times over the past several years for several acute illnesses, which he always treated competently.
Dr. Werschky’s bedside manner is great – his demeanor and banter are relaxing and comforting, and he asks a lot of targeted questions.
As John W. noted, the office facilities and equipment are dated, but I don’t consider cutting edge environs a requisite for solid general practice medicine. Dr. Werschky’s receptionist, though curt, is very nice once you break the ice.
The huge, glaring problem I encountered, however, was as follows:
My wife and I have a newborn. On advice from our (stellar) pediatrician, Dr. Martin Ernster of Golden Gate Pediatrics, I decided to get a TDaP (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis) vaccine booster, as my last round of immunizations had been well over ten years ago.
I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Werschky (finally reaching the office after leaving three unreturned messages) for the vaccine.
When I arrived, Dr. Werschky gave me the TD (not the TDaP) vaccine, instructing me to get the acellular pertussis (the «aP») vaccine on its own from a separate provider. He broadly suggested I call «a travel clinic» to find the pertussis vaccine.
I called all of the travel clinics I could find, plus the Safeway pharmacy – none had the pertussis-​only vaccine. I called Dr. Werschky’s office back and through his assistant he told me to «just go and get the TDaP» from Safeway.
Concerned about potential side-​effects of over-​vaccinating, I called the San Francisco department of health and spoke to their director of medicine. He advised me that, given the not insignificant potential for a serious side-​effect of too much tetanus vaccine given at too short an interval, I should not get a TDaP vaccine on top of the TD vaccine Dr. Werschky had already given.
Not knowing that the stand-​alone pertussis vaccine no longer existed might have been excusable – no one can keep up with every change in an industry.
Advising me to get the TDaP vaccine on top of the TD vaccine without first researching and notifying me of the potential negative effects of doing so directly endangered my well-​being.
Now, instead of side-​effects, I just have no pertussis immunity, which puts my baby’s health at risk. This degree of carelessness in a physician is shameful.

Avoid this Doctor! The office staff is rude and abrasive, the medical equipment is archaic and the entire place smells like puke.
Plenty of good Docs in Marin … avoid Doc Werschky!
