I fly from Seattle to have my hair cut by Michelle and colored by Maya. It’s worth every penny! They are both the very best at what they do…

First off I must say that his review is very overdue. Maya saved my hair about 18 months ago after teenage me gave myself a horrible at home box dye job that needed to be fixed ASAP. Maya managed to fix my horrific hair in one sitting. And as I’m still a teenager, I constantly want to go from blonde to brown and back. Maya really does care about her clients hair and has kept my hair healthy the entire time between my transitions. Maya also is very down to earth and a complete joy to talk to while waiting for that color to do its job. Maya is a true artist and a complete master at her craft. Couldn’t be happier with my fantastic colorist!

I cannot say enough good things about Maya Webb! She is an exceptionally talented Colorist, as well as an all-​around wonderful person. I have been going to Maya for over two years. I first started seeing her when my hair was turned red by another Colorist, who tried, unsuccessfully, three separate times to correct the mistake and get my hair back to a brownish blonde. Maya was not only able to fix my hair, but when she was done, the color looked the best it has ever looked. I have referred several friends to her and they have all been equally thrilled with her work. I highly recommend Maya! You will not be disappointed!

I moved to San Francisco a few years back and needed someone who could tackle my very thick, long, dark, processed and frizzy Persian hair AND make it all look natural. That was my one ask: make me blond and make it natural. After my first consult with Maya she said NO… def def not but what she did was change my life forever.
She made me the most beautiful shade of caramel I’ve ever seen. Not only did my hair look incredible but I felt like the best version of myself. What Maya delivers to her clients is not just hair color but a heart of gold. She’s someone who truly listens and cares about her clients and isn’t afraid to say no.

I have been incredibly lucky to have found Maya (who came highly recommended from my fabulous stylist in San Diego) and I would suggest her to anyone who wants that «natural» gorgeous shiny hair.

I used to think it was RIDICULOUS that people would go to one person for hair color, and ANOTHER person for cut. Until I had a horrific experience when trying a new stylist elsewhere. I found Maya in desperation and she somehow fixed my blonde hair in ONE sitting. It was truly magic and now I can’t imagine having my blonde hair colored by anyone else. I literally won’t let anyone else color my hair. ever. again. I also started getting my hair cut by Michelle a month or so after my first appointment with Maya. I can honestly tell you that every time I sit in Michelle’s chair I am never afraid of what i’m going to look like after she’s done! My hair is in a pretty bad state after having two kids less than two years apart — add to that — it’s also very thin AND fine and has a bunch a regrowth that hasn’t caught up to the rest of my length just yet. Every time I see Michelle she does something a little different to help graduate my regrowth and I end up with a slightly new look that looks fantastic. These ladies are a true gem and I consider myself lucky to be on their roster ;)

I am beyond HAPPY that I listened to the recommendation of a life-​long friend. Both Maya and Michelle are fantastic! My hair looks better and requires less effort than ever before. I walk out of the salon each time with new confidence that does not fade with the first wash. Beyond feeling more beautiful, most importantly I am inspired by both these women. They are both so passionate about their art and their science. Placing yourself in the hands of Michelle and Maya brings you to hands of excellence. I can not help but let some of their excellence brush off on me and inspire me to create my own excellent life. A truly transformative salon!

Workshop is an amazing little gem of a place that really stands out. It’s a stark comparison to the sterile bitchy salon vibe you get at some other high-​end Marin salons. The whole experience from the dynamic duo of Maya and Michelle, to the place itself is real, authentic and comfortable. They are both amazingly talented in their craft as well as being wonderful humans. A place you can’t wait to go to get deep and look amazing.

Are you still wasting your time going into the city or to one of the «get them in, get them out» overrated places in Marin? If so, you need to call Workshop. Maya, the goddess of color, spends time with you to really understand what you need, guaranteeing that you will end up happy whether you are looking for a beachy look or some Mission radical do. The best part? She has an unmatched ability to see and execute color combined with an amazing old soul who truly cares.
I had been everywhere in search of the blonde that I think I was born with. I found out with Maya a Workshop. Oh yeah, did I mention how cool and calm her salon is too?

Alrighty ladies of all hair colors, cuts, and textures – you NEED to invest in yourself and go to Maya and Michelle @ Workshop! They are a tag team times a thousand! The biggest things I look for in developing loyalty toward a stylist or colorist is attention to detail (which normally proportional to time commitment), good vibes, and follow through!
Although she can tackle any type of color, I think Maya was sent from up above to handle blondes. The universe just draws us to her because she can bring depth, texture, brightness, sheen, warmth, and vibrance to blondes like I’ve never seen. She will support you in your choices, but be honest when something might not be a right fit for your hair. Bottom line: you’re in good hands.
Michelle takes precision to the next level. I asked her to wack off 10 inches of my hair less than a year ago and she turned a lifeless mane into a sexy, sassy, shut the «F%&!» up haircut! She’s clear, thorough, and honest. For those of you who need someone to steer the styling «ship» and tell you like it is, she’s your gal… and amazing style to boot!
Finally, I have to talk about follow-​through. It’s hard to not stay connected with Maya and Michelle; they are constantly learning, implementing, and teaching new techniques that are on the cutting edge of hair. In all honesty, I made a move to Los Angeles from northern California this past July and would STILL go back!
I have no idea where these two found each other, but Mill Valley has a dynamic duo of talent that you can only find here at Workshop. Ladies and Gents, it’s worth the wait (yes, they’re that good). Finding a hair stylist is like finding the perfect pair of jeans – once you find your brand, you never go back.

Walking into workshop is not only aesthetically satisfying, it also smells delicious, and while I pop jellybeans on their beautiful couch I anticipate my cut and color. Maya is brilliant with color and amazing at interpreting and skillfully guiding needs. She is a wealth of information, knowledge, and experience and elevates my mood every time I’m in her chair. If it weren’t for Maya, I would not be coloring my hair. Period. Michelle is also an artist, and she seems able to bring out the very best in my hair through her unique ability to really see it – and me – and my individual concerns and ideas. In their hands I finally feel like I’ve found a home. Every time I leave workshop I feel I’ve had a nourishing treat, one that has left me feeling beautiful inside and out.

Maya and Michelle are the goddesses of good hair! Maya is a genius when it comes to color and Michelle is a master crafts-​woman when it comes to cutting. And vice versa! The atmosphere is friendly and genuine. I feel so lucky to have connected with these amazingly great women and to have my hair taken care of at Workshop Salon!

Maya and Michelle are genuine artists that have technically mastered their respective crafts. Ultimately, this is what matters the most, and what you will find at Workshop. Beyond that, they are also lovely, interesting women and passionate business owners who care about the small details from atmosphere to products to beverages.
Maya: Maya consistently creates a vibrant deep color that works with my skin tone and never seems over processed. I recently went through some drastic changes in my skin and she made sure that my hair worked with the changes and remained natural and fitting. She is like an impressionist that can mix and paint colors creatively to produce a cohesive look. As you know, color can take a while, and luckily Maya is lovely to talk to. She is completely down to earth and I always look forward to chatting with her about all things light, heavy or philosophical. That said, she also can read when I’m having a day where I need to sink into a magazine and will gladly oblige. Her assistant Monique styles my hair beautifully every time.
Michelle: This woman can cut hair. She is so meticulous with her cut and layers that everything just falls right. There is something architectural in her approach, and her result is technically spot-​on and fits me perfectly. She has also given me great advice and detailed instructions on how to style my hair AFTER I leave the salon. Weeks and months after my cut, I do nothing and my hair looks great. I put in some effort and my hair looks fantastic. Michelle has tons of energy and is fun to talk to.
Atmosphere: If you get color you are going to be sitting in the salon somewhat often and for long periods of time. So it matters that the salon is filled with what I can only call a creative but soothing energy. The décor is an interesting mix of modern and vintage style that has an overall grounding effect.
Magazines: Great selection for whatever your mood is looking for. This is always my first test of any salon (or doctor’s office).
Coffee: I dream of Workshop cappuccinos
Music: This is another detail that you think doesn’t matter but really stands out when you spend nearly two hours in the chair each time. Maya was in music once upon a time so the selection is eclectic and interesting from 70s hits to current indie rock.
Parking: Ample. I’ve never had an issue. They are located before the hustle and bustle of ‘deep’ MV
Product: High quality and effective.
Appointments: You need to be able to plan ahead, but it is well worth it for their expertise. I communicate with them via text and they are both quite responsive.
Me: I’m in my early 40s with greying thick dark hair that is long and somewhere between wavy and curly. I’ve been coloring my hair since 1998. This is my first Unilocal review because I am passionate about what these two women have built.
Overall, Maya and Michelle are easily the most talented colorist and stylist I’ve worked with, and their salon is the best experience I’ve had in all my years of cut and color.

Maya is a cross between a Nobel prize winning scientist and an artistic genius… and that’s being conservative. I’m a brunette, and she was able to create such a rich, luminous base color, with no red or brassy in it at all… something that had previously seemed impossible. And then, she did a few subtle highlights painting them on freehand (balayage) making it look like I had just spent some time at the beach. I don’t care how long it takes to get an appointment, you need to make one today! She is hands down the best colorist I have ever known.

I totally lucked into finding Maya & Michelle. I moved to Mill Valley last summer and I made my appointment like decades in advance because I was getting married on NYE and I wanted to go on my honeymoon with some bangin’ hair. Maya punched the fun button and my hair looked amazing. And I think we’re long lost siblings from a mountain commune. I love their products, I love the intimacy and attention in the salon, and Michelle has magic scissors. My haircut is gorgeous. My limp and boring hair is now completely bouncy and beautiful and I just love it. I’m a lifer.

I moved to the Bay Area and set out to find the best possible colorist and stylist around. With a recommended from a trusted friend, I found Maya and Michelle. They are true artists, both skilled in their crafts beyond their average peers. Did you know a hair cut could get BETTER as the months go past? Has your hair color stopped traffic? I’m so impressed by their work and dedication to making you look phenomenal.
The space is clean, and simple. There’s not a billion blow driers buzzing, so you can actually have a conversation if you choose. And you’re treated REALLLY well by them, because you’re their only client there!

If you are currently getting your hair cut or colored anywhere else, I apologize. You clearly do not know what you are missing. It’s okay. We all make mistakes. How were you to know a damn near existential experience was just down the road?
The good news? You can change. You can make an appointment with Maya and Michelle, then you’ll know what true badassery (TOTALLY should be a word), is. And, strange as it sounds, it rubs off. You feel so damn fine walking out, it soaks in. It connects with the part of you that already knew you were totally rad.
So get there. Trust me. It’s the right decision.

Warning, once you’ve been here and experienced the Workshop difference, you’re not going to be able to step foot into a «regular» hair/​color salon again. Ever.
Why?
Because there is no drama here, no crazy receptionist with phones ringing off the hook, no cacophony of battling hair dryers, yelling stylists or cell phones.
This is, simply put: professional, attentive and top notch service. You will have to plan ahead like a master calendar wizard, but just like other luxury reservation, your wait will be rewarded. It’s not just the espresso, fizzy water, vinyl playing in the background and Mike & Ikes in a bowl… it’s the women that make this place a regular stop for color and cut.

Michelle and Maya are hands down the best I’ve ever had! I found them using Unilocal last year, and it was like I stumbled upon magic. They’re salon is warm and beautiful and more importantly you are never disappointed with their work. Worth every minute waiting for and every dollar spent (and it may be a lot of dollars) to get an appointment with them!

I bounced around to different hairstylists and colorists when I moved to the Bay Area in 2004. All the «best of» lists kept sending me to people that just weren’t living up the hype. Then a friend of mine referred me to Michelle in 2007, and seven years later, I have never looked back. Right away, Michelle had a vision for my hair that was beyond what I could have envisioned for myself. I went to her as a (bad) brunette with (bad) mid-​length hair and now I’m a foxy, long-​haired blonde! And yes, it’s true, I HAVE had more fun! I have so much trust in her that in seven years I have never once told her what to do. I just tell her, «You’re the expert! Make me gorgeous!», and she DOES! It’s such a relief to know you’re in TRULY capable hands and you can just relax and enjoy the experience.
Then last year, Michelle introduced me to the salon’s colorist Maya. Prior to that, I was going to a great woman for color that Michelle had referred me to, but I was ready to shake things up a bit. I was struggling with whether I should try to go darker and maybe do the ombré thing. But after having a very lengthy consultation with (the very patient) Maya, we both realized that I just wasn’t ready to let go of the blonde! She kept the «Va-​va-​voom» in my hair while giving me a little more depth and dimension. Exactly what I needed.
The best part about getting to go to the salon is that over these seven years, Michelle, and now Maya, have become dear friends. It’s been such a blessing to get to follow their lives and welcome them into mine. I relish my time in the salon and can’t wait until my next appointment. It is truly, TRULY a unique and very special place. If you aren’t going, you are MISSING OUT!

Maya and Michelle are a dynamic duo that will obsess about your hair right along with you. I know this from experience with them. They will be upfront and honest (even if it means less money in their pocket). The salon is simple, elegant and relaxing in Mill Valley. I much prefer this than going to a large, noisy salon where no one really cares if you are happy or not. Don’t be surprised if you receive a text from one of them as a follow-​up to make sure you are pleased! Maya tries to get inside *your* mind to find out what you like and what you don’t like. Michelle is meticulous with her cuts. I have never experienced the typical «drama» you get with salons at Workshop. I’ve tried to leave with wet hair (easier for them, faster for me), but no — Maya MUST see what it looks like to check her work (this is a compliment)! Seriously impressed.
