History

Established in 1984.

Dr. Marcus has been in private practice serving families and individuals in the Bay Area for 31 years. His father, Dr. Irwin Marcus was an orthodontist in San Francisco and Millbrae, and Dr. Alan Marcus joined him after completing his orthodontic residency. They practiced together for five years before Dr. Irwin Marcus retired in 1989.

For many years, Dr. Marcus has been actively involved in the Millbrae/​Burlingame community. He was born in San Francisco and raised in Burlingame. He attended Lincoln Elementary School, followed by Burlingame Intermediate School and then Mills High School. Dr. Marcus received his undergraduate degree at the University of California in Santa Barbara. In 1985, he completed his orthodontic training and residency at the University of the Pacific Dental School (UOP). For several years, he taught Clinical Orthodontics at UOP.

In 1993, he completed a two-​year post graduate course taught by Dr. Ronald Roth. This course concentrated on the importance of the jaw joint in achieving a correct bite.

His passion for orthodontics and new technology continues today. Each year he takes extensive continuing education courses to keep up with the new developments in the field of orthodontics.

In his spare time, he is an avid Giants fan, enjoys traveling, photography and jazz.

Got my braces on this Monday, and they were SO QUICK! It was sore after but they provided me with very helpful material and information. I ran out of Gishy goo which is an oral silicone relief for brackets and they gave me another one right away! Loving and caring staff! very understanding!

Dr Marcus and his staff are wonderful. I’ve had my four children’s orthodontic needs met by Dr. Marcus and I’d do it all again if I had to. His staff are friendly and professional. They give a personal touch to all of their patients. The end result tells the tale and I have to say, my kids teeth look fantastic. Thank you Dr. Marcus and all staff! You are awesome!

So Unilocal,I have a question, how can I give a business 10 stars ?, and no I am not affiliated with this office nor do I have any family members working there (although they do treat you like family) but without doubt the office of Dr. Marcus and his wonderful staff are outstanding in so many many ways. My two teenage daughters where treated at this office. One daughter was 3 years ago and my other daughter is in the final stages. I have two more on deck and needless to say we will be paying Dr. Marcus a visit.
Dr. Marcus sat with us each time and went through our options and the procedure with clear and concise information, no frills or empty promises. He is to teeth what Steve Jobs was to Apple… He knows his stuff and is even aware of what the rest of the world is doing or advancing with orthodontics. Just ask him. One of my daughters procedure took a while longer than anticipated and with the patience (or lack thereof) of a teenager she was getting frustrated. Enter Dr. Marcus with a new and advanced procedure for stubborn teeth and «Wal Lah» …the teeth did what they were supposed to do. straighten up.
Dr. Marcus can and does what most adults can’t do, make a teenager smile and I mean that big toothed, wide mouthed, eye twinkling smile. He is a gifted Orthodontist, akin to genius, and knows his job while never failing to listen and address the concerns of patients and parents. Here are some of the ingredients I have seen him and his staff use in their success as probably the best Orthodontic Office in the Bay Area and beyond.
Skilled, Informative, Conscientious, Honest, Patient, Kindness, Knowledgeable, Clean, Friendly, Modern Equipment, Local community sponsor, etc.etc.etc. Keep up the incredible work… It works !. Dr. Marcus was highly recommended to us by the office secretary at Discovery Dental in SF. Office secretaries always know the real scoop!
This employee’s son had his orthodontia work done with Dr. Marcus and she was very pleased. At the time. I thought this is a great recommendation because who would know better than someone who interacts with dentists all the time and is a mom.
We arrived and were pleasantly greeted by Amanda. What a wonderful and helpful staff member she is! She has been so helpful setting up a payment plan that works for us!
Dr. Marcus stays on top of his game by investing in high quality care for his patients. Initially, he took his time explaining what our son needed. He sat down with our family and explained the whole process to my husband, my son and me.
Then most of the office visits were quick and we hardly noticed our sons braces!
Our daughter looks like she will also need braces, but Dr. Marcus wants to make sure all of her baby teeth are out first.
Dr. Marcus uses the latest technology and he is very personable and professional!

Dr. Marcus and his staff are the best. Why? Well, the staff is super friendly and helpful. They almost always run on time, and they use the best equipment there is. But most importantly, I would recommend Dr. Marcus very highly for three main reasons.
1. He is a true orthodontia geek. That means he loves his craft and his science. He works to achieve the best results possible, and he keeps up on the latest developments and technologies.
2. He only uses the highest quality equipment. No fads or products that people have made because kids like them. He uses what is high quality and what he needs to get the job done with the best results in the most appropriate period of time.
3. He tells you the truth. If you or your family member don’t need braces, he will tell you that. He will tell you what he can fix and what may not get fixed. He understands teenagers and adjusts his methods and techniques to adapt to what he knows teenagers will and will not comply with (can you say headgear??).
Both of my children have been treated by this office, and I can honestly say that I am completely satisfied and have recommended him to anyone. He has outstanding technicians and very friendly and helpful office staff. Oh, and he is totally nice and has a good sense of humor.

When looking for an ortho my husband didn’t hesitate to send his children to the very man who did all his ortho work, and from what I hear he was a project. I have been taking the kids for a month now and I see why my husband was so convinced. The staff is nice and Dr. Marcus is very gentle and takes the time to fully explain everything.

It is rare to meet someone so interested, ethical and highly skilled in his profession and I’m very appreciative. I’d give him 10 stars if I could.
I’m an adult, 65, referred at my request by my San Francisco periodontist because my teeth are «drifting», causing some very slight spaces and rotation, but it bothered me. Dr. Marcus considered my concerns, gave his opinion and explained my options in a pleasant, positive way. He described procedures that would occur if I did choose braces – things I’d never even considered. He answered questions. After taking some time to consider the information, I was able to make the decision not to get braces, but will get a retainer to prevent further movement.
Honest, informative, thorough, knowledgeable, likeable, prompt – and this goes for the entire staff.

Dr. Marcus is a fabulous orthodontist. He is the only bay area orthodontist recommended by one of the arguably best orthognathic surgeons in the world, Dr. Arnett in Santa Barbara. I am cursed with lifelong jaw problems (thanks mom!) and went to Dr. Arnett after 15 years and 2 previous unsuccessful surgeries with a different surgeon. I won’t lie, I looked a mess. Dr. Arnett entrusted my care to Dr. Marcus. I had my third surgery in April of 2010. Between the two of them, my jaw is stable and has been stable for the past two years. My teeth touch, I can chew, no more headaches. I know most people can’t imagine this, but I haven’t been able to bite into a sandwich in almost 20 years, and now I can. Do you think you might need orthognathic surgery? Well here is your orthodontist. What? You live over the bridge and the commute makes you sad face so you’d rather work with Joe Schmoe up the street? You would be sadder to have to redo the surgery (trust me on that one) — suck it up. Go see Dr. Marcus, listen to his recommendations for care and which surgeons to use (he’s dealt with all of them), and be assured you are in good hands.
As far as regular orthodontics go, I can only imagine Dr. Marcus is stellar at that as well. While many people worry a lot about the bells and whistles that a practice will give them, the most important thing is the skill of the orthodontist. Dr. Marcus is conscientious about keeping up with his continuing education in order to provide the best for his patients. He will provide an honest and fair assessment of you or your child’s issues and will treat them appropriately and with a more than fair price for the quality of the work.

He is a great orthodontist who takes his time treating his patients and explaining the treatment. His staff is very friendly and does a good job keeping appointment times so there is not a long wait. Normally I wouldn’t want to brag about a man being quick. In this case it’s a good thing. Dr. Marcus is fast, no long waits and he gets the job done. He also takes care of every detail and ensures that your smile looks flawless. Plus, he’s a pretty friendly and buffed young man which is a plus for all the hot mommas going in to get their childrens teeth straight. In my case I am one of his «older» patients. His office staff is also friendly and the office us spotless. Bonus perk: near shopping, Peets Coffee and awesome parking.
