I had the pleasure of attending my first production(Big Fish) at First Stage Milwaukee last weekend. The production was inventive, acting/singing/dancing talent very good, and it was an entertaining cultural activity for kids and parents alike. First Stage Milwaukee performances are at the Todd Wehr Theater in the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts(PAC). The sets for Big Fish were outstanding, the only minus was sound production, accompanying music track was too loud to hear individual singing sometimes. Big Fish runs through May 31, and although it ends a bit sadly, it’s an inspiring story to live your life to the fullest, and a great lesson for kids. If you’ve got kids, First Stage should be on your cultural To Do list!

Incredibly high production values, and unlike other professional theatres for young audiences(such as Seattle Children’s Theatre and its equivalent in Minneapolis), First Stage casts actual children in child roles. Their mission is «teaching life skills through stage skills.» They select plays based on great children’s literature: this season, they are featuring ESPERANZARISING, BUNNICULA and THEGIVER, among others. I am really, really impressed with the caliber of their work. A must-see if you have kids, love live arts and literature, and live in the Milwaukee area.
