I was excited that Grum seemed to be a classic barber shop with a upscale vibe. My mom always said my hair needed to be cut in a salon, but a little part of me keeps trying to take the cheaper, «you can act like a man» option. The décor was comfortable and I enjoyed the view of one of Downer’s busiest intersections. I was a walk-in which seems to be frowned upon but there were no other customers so I was seated. The barber was an good conversationalist on local matters but he lost me when he started expressing negative opinions about a certain class of residents in the neighborhood. My hair looked okay but not great even as I left, then got worse after washing it out at home and grew in unevenly. At $ 18 for the cut and a $ 5 tip, it was one of the more economical places I’ve tried, but there are many options that will do better for a couple of bucks more.

Joe gives a great cut and is very personable. It helps that he’s less than 300 feet from my apartment but nontheless I do make it a habit of going to him. He’s closed on Mondays and Tuesdays but will work around your schedule. He knows a lot about the Milwaukee area and has been cutting hair here for quite some time. He also grew up here
