Don’s Leather Cleaning

I brought in my ugly, stained ‘80s leather jacket and Don’s made it look brand new and updated. I felt the price was very reasonable. I’m taking all my specialty repair needs to Don’s.
Free parking out front is always helpful, too.

These guys are incredible. Two weeks ago I wandered into Don’s Leather with my beloved but tattered fur coat (a thrift store find — I’m actually a vegan!), which the hotshot fur folks downtown insisted they could neither clean nor restore. Don’s did both beautifully — at a monumentally good price in even less time than promised. They also repaired, conditioned and dyed my favorite leather handbag: it’s better than new for a reasonable price. Very high recommendation!

Dropped off a leather jacket to mend a small tear. As promised, they called two weeks later to say it was ready. Good thing I inspected it, because not only was it not fixed, it hadn’t been touched! They said they’d fix it while I waited a couple minutes. They did, but the fix showed tiny bits of glue, and the edges needed a bit of color. I politely pointed this out, but they seemed disinterested. At least it was inexpensive. Later took the jacket to the always excellent George’s Shoe Repair on Grand Ave for a touch-​up — done free on the spot. I was going to use George’s in the first place, but thought I’d give Don’s a try. I wanted to like Don’s, but had hoped for better customer service and workmanship.

My experience was totally different than that of previous reviewers. I had an expensive purse that had several very visible grease stains resulting from a piece of pizza landing on it. It is a light camel color and I was really skeptical that they could restore it to its former condition. As a result of Don’s care it looks like new and there are absolutely no marks visible in the places which had prominent stains. The purse was ready when promised and I received a phone call to let me know when it was ready. I was so thrilled with the outcome and the staff at Don’s seemed genuinely pleased with the positive feedback. I cannot recommend them highly enough.
And I was treated with complete courtesy from start to finish.

I brought in a pair of Ugg boots with an oil stain. The man assured me they could get it out. In fact he told me that oil is the easiest to get out. Come back in a week. I returned to the boots looking the same. No change. He never called to tell me they couldn’t get the stain out. In fact he said «„Oh I remember you bringing them in, they look better.“» Not even a little bit. He then told me I could have them dyed. They have the best dye person ever. Being very hesitant at this point, because he had already tried to convince me it was no problem to get the oil out. I agreed. Come back in a week. It was just over a week. They were to be finished on Friday. They are closed on weekends. I called on the following Monday. They said they were ready. I arrived there to the man telling me that they were locked in the back, and the person with the key had left for the day. He went on to tell me that he would have them delivered to my home on Tuesday. I received a phone call from a rude woman telling me my boots would be done after 3 on Wednesday. When I tried to explain to the woman what this man had promised, she hung up on me. I was shocked. I came in on Wednesday. As we waited for about 10 min. He came back with the boots and said they need one more day to complete the dying process. So this is my 3^rd trip to this place, after they told me they were ready on Monday. I explained that to him. I went on to tell him all the things they had already told me. THEN, at that point, I was completely shocked. Especially after reading the previous review. He also accused me of being under the influence of alcohol. He said «You were here last Friday.“I said „No, I was here on Monday.”“He said, well we have it all on audio.“» I said «„Well that’s great, so you will remember everything you said to me!“» I took the boots to NEVER return to Don’s Leather Cleaning, because they are over the top rude, and clearly accuse all of their customers to be under the influence when they can’t make their commitments. I would like to know what any of that has to do with their poor customer service. I advise NO ONE to take anything there. Oh, and they make you pay in advance for services they cannot do! –0000 for a rating.
Most recently I am in need to have a letterman jacket cleaned. It has a small amount of leather. I have called over 10 dry cleaners in my area. Even called many that are further away. They all use Dons Leather. I am shocked that there are not other options. Until I find another option, perhaps even cleaning it ourself, my daughter will wear a dirty jacket.
If anyone is looking for a new business venture, I encourage you all to open a leather cleaning business. There is NO competition!
