The place seemed pretty dark inside which should have been the first indication that this would not have turned out well. But, I needed a haircut because I didn’t want to go meet the dean with my hair fro’in out. I entered and was greeted with a «what’s your phone number». weird. I sat around for 10 – 15 minutes, there were 2 – 3 barbers there. I always get a 2 on the sides and leave 1.5″ on the top. It’s a fairly easy haircut, so I never cared where I got it cut or how it looked because it always came out more or less the same. The barber kept asking me «does this look right?»(«Oh God, what has happened» I was thinking) and he had to do 4 – 5 adjustments. Thinking it was decent enough in the dimly lit chair, «screw it, I’ll just pay him». Finally, I got home and looked in the mirror of my well lit bathroom. The right half was shorter than the left half. There was a 1×1″ inch patch at the front left of my head that was ½″ long!(Remember, I usually get 1.5″ on the top). I guess the low lighting helps with the electricity bill and it won’t show the customers how fucked up their hair got. I ended up meeting the Dean the next day looking like a crackhead that got his haircut in some alley. I now cut my own hair.

I dropped in to this location since I am a student and it was close. I was going to an event for my boyfriend’s work later on in the evening. I didn’t have time to touch up my hair beforehand, so I stopped here to see if they would be willing to do a few loose curls. I never got a service since the guy that helped me quoted the service at $ 65! I’m a former hairstylist. Of the 10 years I worked behind the chair, I owned my own business for 3. There is no way in hell I would charge that much for what I was asking. There was no price posted for a style and I guess that’s maybe the issue. Great Clips doesn’t have the best reputation and that sucks, the haircut is always about the stylist, not the salon. However, I don’t care if you are Jonathan, your touch up with a curling iron can’t be that epic, if it was, you wouldn’t be working at Great Clips.

I am an easy cut. I don’t have a lot of hair on top but thick on the sides. There are still some tricks involved in cutting my inconsistent crop of follicles. The last chain shop I patronized(shall we say C.C.) was doing a fine job but the employees were competing for business and trying to sway those of us who preferred a certain cutter to their side. Needless to say, this does not happen at this Great Clips. This has been a consistent experience but still the cutters don’t seem to have to follow a corporate script and protocol. I especially like the App showing wait times in advance etc. There are also coupons presented for the next cut at times and some discounts available if you should qualify. There never has been more than a fifteen minute wait and they staff according to projected volume for certain times of the day. The last two Winterish visits I found it uncomfortably cool(not in personality but temps.) Don’t think I’d want to have myhair washed in a chilly place.

A middle aged, Asian woman named Elizabeth cut my hair. I was so horrified with my haircut that I showed the salon manager the following day. I received a full refund. I cried after I went home and tried to style in. Avoid this place.

Between work and school, my free time is very limited, which is why I ended up going to great clips on the U of M campus for a quick trim. Going in I really did not expect much or an amazing haircut. I needed my split ends cut and did not have time to really go anywhere else. When I walked in there were 2 hair dressers, one of them greeted me, took my name down and told me it would be about 30 minutes. As I waited, the hair dresser who ended up cutting my hair, was very nice to her male clients and I was happy that I was not going to get a disgruntled Great Clips hair who hates her lob because she works at a place like Great Clips. When it was finally my turn the nice girl who was super smiley towards the male clients glaringly looked at me, asked me what I wanted. When I explained that I wanted 2 inches off, but wanted all of the dead ends off she looked annoyed and in a rude tone said you at least need 3. I smiled and said okay, I figured that may be the case. She was very rude, never looked at me or addressed me and had a nice conversation like she did with the male clients. She then rudely lectured me on how I should have gotten my hair cut sooner, even though I had kindly told her I never had time to get a hair cut and knew I should have gone in earlier. She huffed and puffed the entire time. After her lecture and the a not-so-great cut, I headed to the register and grudgingly paid. I did not get a «thank you» or come«back soon«like all of the other male clients before me. Look disgruntled Great Clips lady, if you hate your job please do not take it out a client who was nothing but nice to you, get a new career! I would much rather go to Aveda Institute any day, it’s cheaper and the students do a wonderful job!

You know, Great Clips normally wouldn’t be something I’d spend time reviewing, but this Great Clips has a great staff, and time after time they did an amazing job for me. I never came away with a bad haircut, and they were fast and friendly. They’re a bit pricey(at least for my relatively simple haircut needs) at $ 12, but all things considered, it’s worth it.

I am really not a girly-girl when it comes to my unruly long, curly, black hair. Frankly, for years I dyed it and hacked at the ends all by myself. It is either worn curly down or shoved in a bun so in all reality it is not possible to notice my self-imposed unevenness. Unfortunately, I am slightly paranoid sometimes. This is precisely why I like this place. I come in early in the am or right before close when the UM students aren’t milling about. Two seconds after taking off my coat, I’m in my chair getting down to ½−1 inch off business. The staff is all about the turnover and I’m out of there in maybe 10, but less than 15 minutes. There are no styling suggestions, no expensive salon product peddling, no obligatory«shoot the poop» with your hairdresser. I love it! Since I’m relatively low-maintenance, this works for me. If you are looking for fancy, whether it is even possible for them to crank out, it may be better found elsewhere. Credit cards accepted — whoo hoo cash back bonus!
