Description

Specialties

Jacob’s Well is a progressive community in South Minneapolis learning new ways to be church. We are a welcoming congregation to all people and prefer good questions to easy answers. We often refer to ourselves as ‘A church for people who don’t like church.’ We like the irony of that statement. Office 3751 17th Ave S. Mpls

We have great Children’s Programs that will equip your kids with a faith you will be comfortable with and will prepare them for life; secure in themselves and with a big picture (not narrow view) of the world and God.

Our Worship Services are for people who sense that God matters, there aren’t easy answers, and life is best done together in community. Our services try really hard to connect with life and not skirt tough or touchy issues. We have good coffee and great music.

We do GroupLife well. Groups of 6 – 12 people who meet weekly or bi-weekly to learn, grow & have fun together.

We aren’t perfect. We’ll always be under construction. That’s just the way it is.

History

Established in 2006.

Jacob’s Well was started by a group of people who weren’t giving up on God, but were giving up on any institutional religion’s ability to express it in a way that spoke to their lives. While they launched out of the ELCA (the liberal branch of the Lutherans) they still are affiliated with them because they want to be part of the ongoing conversation of what church will look like in the 21st century.

From the beginning we decided not to own property or have a church building because we wanted to be the church, not have one. Since then we have gathered Sundays at Field Middle School (4645 4th Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55 419) but meet sometimes at the Minnehaha Falls in the summer and other places in the area when it makes sense. We like to be mobile.

Our community has grown to about 200 people gathered each week, and our leaders consult and teach about emerging trends in faith, leadership and church around the country.
