Ok. I’ve posted some negative reviews so I need to adjust my Unilocal-​Karma by singing a complimentary song to one of my favorite places to shop: Local Motion. The only problem is now, reader, after you read this, we may be competing for the same fab inventory. I hope you’re not my size…
I’ve been shopping here for years. I can’t imagine Barb, Jeannie or any other staff being rude as one reviewer mentioned. They are boisterous sometimes, but I love the sound of women laughing, especially when my voice is in the chorus. The inventory ebbs and flows with the buying trips and orders coming in. Sometimes the racks are super jammed. But I’d rather have that with amazing, unique choices than space between hangers and a limited amount of blando-​mundo. If that’s what you want, for goodness sake, go back to the mall. This is an uptown boutique and it has a artful dynamic about it.
Barb is also an accomplished seamstress/​designer (ask about her Kinsale hoodie!) Her sewing machines/​sergers are right back by the rear dressing rooms. She has altered her pieces to fit me at no extra charge. I am a long term customer, and we all know each other by first name– but that relationship has developed over time through doing great business with each other– the old school way. They give me unique choices and GREAT service every time I’m there, including suggestions I never would have thought of (that look so good on me) and following up with a call on items that I wanted. I’m sure I’m not their most lucrative customer yet I feel valued as their customer. I also don’t bounce checks or go Prima Donna on them either. Have fun shopping with them and they’ll be simpatico. They understand fashion, service and making the experience a positive one.
They get really busy sometimes, and I think they do an impressive job juggling and balancing customers. Consider that Barb not only owns the place, she designs, buys, works the floor, has fashion shows, «Girls Night Out» events and participates in sales outside the shop like Maiden Minnesota. They also have relationships with small designers, both local and non.
Price points are a little expensive for me but it’s worth it because what I get, I keep for years and the pieces are unique and are «compliment magnets» over and over again.
Give them a try. If you had a bad experience, I strongly urge you to give them another try. I absolutely love this shop! Thanks, Ladies, for doing what you do so well!

I have been shopping at Local Motion for over 15 years. I started shopping there as a young, punk rocker type gal, that worked as a cocktail waitress in Uptown. I had a funky style and a one of a kind type of flair. Now I am a mom that lives 30 miles out of the city, a graduate school student and a social worker. Local Motion has dressed me for almost every single important event that I have attended over the past decade and a half. In addition, it is a rare day when I am not wearing at least one article of clothing that I purchased at this store. Almost everything I have worn from this store has always gathered me many compliments, and I have advised the women to head to this store a.s.a.p! Barb, the owner, and every employee that I have met over the years, have always treated me with respect, kindness, and honesty. Even when I was young and funky and now that I am a bit more toned down, Local Motion has always had many options to dress me in. There have been a number of times when I have been in a bit of a time crunch and needed to find an outfit quickly. I came in, told them where I was going and they took over and grabbed me things to try on. I remember on one occasion where I got invited to a fancy wedding as a guest at the last minute. I went into to Local Motion and was out the door, beautiful, perfect fitting dress in hand, 15 minutes later! I highly recommend this store and hope that you will love it as much I do!

Local Motion has been my top-​of-​list go-​to for years… a favorite place to shop and share girl-​time with best friends. We are consistently greeted with happy delight and reliably outfitted in unique, well-​priced items. From casual to work to special occasion, we are assured of sartorial success at Local Motion!

I live in San Diego but still consider Local Motion my favorite store. We have lots and lots of stores here, but nothing compares to the unique and personal service we receive at Local Motion. We visit as a «first stop» every time we are in Minneapolis, which is once a year. The things we’ve purchased there are AMAZING: like custom clothing. I get compliments like crazy and things from LM never go out of style. The owners are sweet and committed to a wonderful shopping experience for me and my husband. Besides clothes, I have boots and jewelry from LM, too. It’s «my» store, hands down. 5++++!

I’ve been a loyal LM customer for years. One of my FAVE shops. BEST selection of dresses EVER. Super cool shoes & bags. Casual jeans & T’s. And BEST customer service –they really have an eye & understanding of my needs and will suggest things that I normally wouldn’t pick but that I fall in love with. I’ve just returned from another great shopping day at Local Motion. I purchased a a dress and jacket for work, a dress for a gala event, and a fun run-​around sweater to wear with leggings. I’ve shopped at Local Motion for a few years now and it is always my first stop when I want something interesting and well made — plus, Jeanne and Barb are always honest and helpful — they won’t let you leave without looking your best! I’m in my 40s (young enough to want something stylish and sassy, but old enough to know my age).

Bumping this up to three stars. I definitely saw a better side to Local Motion the last time I was here — much cuter merch than I saw during my first few visits.
Plus, I recently complimented a friend on her cute blouse (and then later on a dress) and she cited Local Motion as the source of the cuteness… so touché, Local Motion. :)

Local Motion is my go to for dresses, fun and comfortable pants, and cute tops. This store has never let me down. I am in my late thirties, have 3 kids, a traveling husband, and no time to shop. I know that if I pop into Local Motion for 10 minutes, the wonderful women who own the place will fill a dressing room with incredible, adorable clothes that fit me perfectly, and I will walk out with an exciting boost to my wardrobe. One time, I called ahead because I had a baby and toddler with me, and a dress to buy for a function that evening. By the time I got to the store, the dressing room was ready for me. In 5 minutes, I picked out the perfect dress, shoes, jacket (made by one of the owners) and handbag. I have received endless compliments on all these items, and every item I have ever purchased at this store. And the women who own it are just fantastic. Can’t wait for my next 10 minute drop in!

I’m not sure if I’m the one who changed or Local Motion. I used to love this store about six years ago, but now when I stop in I rarely find anything that excites me. I love that they sell local designers’ clothes, but most of the pieces in the shop seem too young, almost junior styled, cheaply made, and expensive. I think there’s a better way to balance quality and good design in the clothing they bring in. Until that happens, I’ll stop in every once in a while just to browse…

Great place to find unique one-​of-​a kind pieces! As someone who only shops online or strictly banana republic (I hate wasting time at places that I have to dig or can’t find my size)… I always find a gem of a purchase at local motion!
It’s trendy enough that I feel like I’m being adventurous, yet conservative enough that i’ll wear the pieces to work.
The have amazing summer dresses and cocktail dresses! And I just picked up some fabulous wool mittens, lined with fleece and fur — too bad they are far to cute to brave this blizzard!
Also — just changed this to 5 stars… 100% honest, everything I buy from here gets 5+ compliments per wear. Good thing I’m a few miles away… else goodbye paycheck…

Update: it’s a new day at Local Motion Clothing. I returned to try to find a cute dress to wear to the bazillions of weddings I have this summer; I’ve finally reached the age where everyone I know is getting married, and the other boutiques I tried around Uptown did not have anything in for my tricky not-​quite-​plus-​sized-​but-​not-​skinny-​mini body. Local Motion is awesome for women hovering around that range; lots of cute, flattering dresses that are not sack-​like or awkward.
When I came in and talked to the saleswoman about the experiences I’d been having at the other boutiques, she told me I needed to «always come here first» because they would take care of me. And take care of me she did! She found lots of cute dresses in fun colors and various designs for me to try on that fit PERFECTLY, and she all-​around made me feel awesome. Totally necessary after feeling kind of dumpy at the other places.
Then, to top it all off, the owner checked me out, and she noticed that the dress I had been marked with the wrong price — twenty dollars over. Not only does the owner know her merchandise well enough to know exactly what every dress in the store should cost, but she’s honest enough to mark it down when there is no way I would find out the actual cost. Absolutely awesome; I will definitely be back for cute, nice dresses.

This review should really be 3.5 stars, but considering my last review was 3 stars, I guess it all evens out.
Saw a dress by Kokoon (local lablel) I liked the other day, but they didn’t have my size. The owner was happy to call them and have them bring one in my size over. Owner called. I went in. I loved it. Loved it. Totally casual chic, no wrinkle type material with a ton of different fall-​ish colors that will allow me to mix and match it perfectly with other items in my closet. It wasn’t cheap, but not over the top either. The amount I’ll wear it will probably make up for the semi-​splurge. Very happy.

I can’t stand this boutique! I have been in several times and each time have been ignored. The clothes are not great but the atomosphere and the way the store is displayed is awful. Absolutely not worth the time.

I’ve been in here only a few times, and each time I’ve come in here, I couldn’t find anything worth paying for. it is sorta depressing for me, because over the past few months, they have had some pretty neat looking items in the window, so I expected everything to be unique when I walked in the store.
The clothes are all local, but if that is what you looking for I would recommend going to Design Collective, waaay better clothes, and waaay better service!
There really isn’t anything special about this place, it’s basically just another overpriced boutique store in uptown. The workers suck, and clothes are mediocre. I’ll be back in hopes that new things are getting better and better, but honestly, I’m not even sure its worth it.

Great place to find one-​of-​a-​kind women’s apparel. The majority of the designers are local, although there are some from Paris and NYC. Prices are reasonable when considering what you’re purchasing. Most comparable to Anthropologie or Banana Republic.
