History

Established in 1904.

Today: The Minneapolis Convention Center is actually the fifth such facility in Minneapolis. The current center was completed in 1991 with its new expansion opened in 2002.

1990 — 1965: For 25 years Minneapolis hosted all of its major events in the Convention Hall. But the ever-growing Minneapolis/St. Paul area needed a larger facility to hold the tradeshows, conventions and meetings that were interested in coming to the area.

1964 — 1927: In 1927 a new Minneapolis Auditorium was built. In addition to hosting conventions, this auditorium was home to the Minneapolis Lakers basketball team, from 1947 — 1960, the first major league team to play in Minneapolis.

1926 — 1905: The first Minneapolis Auditorium opened at the corner of 11th Street and Nicollet Avenue.

1904 — 1806: The Exposition Building opened in 1806 was the first official building to host the city’s major events. One of the most prestigious events it hosted was the 1892 Republican National Convention.
